Texans WR Andre Johnson Unhappy With Contract

When the Houston Texans opened up their "Organized Team Activity" sessions on Monday, all eyes were expected to be on linebacker Brian Cushing and how Steve Slaton and Owen Daniels were recovering from injuries.

Add another issue the Texans will need to address, as John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson is skipping the voluntary sessions because he is unhappy with his contract.

Johnson is arguably one of the Top 3 receivers in the game, as evidenced by his 587 receptions, 7,948 yards and 42 touchdowns in the seven seasons since being chosen with the 3rd overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft. Johnson is a four-time Pro Bowler, two-time first-team All-Pro, and has led the National Football League in receiving yards in each of the last two seasons.

Johnson has five-years and $35.2 million dollars remaining on an 8-year, $59.75 million dollar contract extension he signed with the Texans in March of 2007. That contract contained $15 million dollars in guaranteed money, which Johnson received in the form of signing and roster bonuses in 2007 and 2008.

That means that none of the $35.2 million dollars remaining on Johnson's contract, including his $5.8M base salary this upcoming season, is guaranteed. With a lockout looming in 2011, the same season Johnson turns 30, I'm having a difficult time faulting Johnson for trying to get a little more security in the remaining years of his contract.

Texans general manager Rick Smith plans to meet with Johnson at some point this off-season, McClain adds.
