Texans LB Brian Cushing Retains 2009 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing will retain his 2009 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

The 50 votes for the Associated Press-issued award re-voted this week after it was discovered that Cushing tested positive for a banned substance last September. Cushing appealed the suspension, which was denied in February, and will be suspended for the first four games of the 2010 NFL regular season for violating the NFL's steroid policy.

After receiving 39 votes the first time around, Cushing received 18 of the 50 votes in the re-vote.

Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd received 13 votes, more than twice his original total (6), while Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews finished third--again--with 10 votes. Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo received three votes, while St. Louis Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis picked up one vote.

Three voters were unavailable, while two abstained from the re-vote.
