Ryan Mathews Working to Improve as a Receiver

San Diego Chargers first-round running back Ryan Mathews only caught 19 passes during his college career, with 11 of those receptions coming during the 2009 season.

If he's to replace future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson, who caught 530 passes over nine seasons, as the Chargers' feature back, Mathews is going to need to work on his receiving ability.

"It's a point of emphasis for me," Mathews said, according to Scott Bair of the North County Times. "I think I have great hands, but I want to make sure they're on point. I dropped a couple catchable passes last week, and that showed that I'm a little rusty in terms of catching the ball. I've set aside time to catch 50-75 balls each day leading up to the first (preseason) game to be at my best."
