Patriots Sign WR/RB Danny Woodhead

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports the New England Patriots have signed wide receiver/running back Danny Woodhead to fill the 53rd spot on their roster.

New England had an open spot after trading running back Laurence Maroney to the Denver Broncos earlier this week.

Woodhead (5-9, 200) is an undrafted free agent out of Chadron State who has spent the last 2+ seasons bouncing between the New York Jets practice squad and active roster. In 11 career games, Woodhead has 15 carries for 64 yards and 8 receptions for 87 yards, adding three tackles on special teams.

Featured as a player on the bubble of the Jets' roster during the series finale of HBO's "Hard Knocks" series, Woodhead made the Jets' 53-man roster and registered a special teams tackle during the team's 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.

The Patriots and Jets square off at 4:15pm ET in the Meadowlands on Sunday.

Woodhead, who is unlikely to play a major role on Sunday afternoon, becomes the latest player in a long line of roster gamesmanship between the two AFC East franchises.
