Patriots Sign RB Thomas Clayton Off Browns Practice Squad

The New England Patriots announced the signing of running back Thomas Clayton off the Cleveland Browns' practice squad.

Offensive tackle Quinn Ojinnaka has been released.

Clayton, a sixth-round pick (186th overall) out of Kansas State by the San Francisco 49ers in 2007, led the 49ers in rushing during the 2007 and 2008 pre-seasons, and spent much of his first two seasons on the 49ers' practice squad. Clayton injured his knee and spent the 2009 on injured reserve.

Signed by the Patriots in June, Clayton gained 34 yards on 15 carries for New England during the 2010 pre-season, but was released on September 4.

New England acquired Ojinnaka, a restricted free agent, from the Atlanta Falcons in August, and re-structured his contract, lowering his base salary from $1.176 million to $640,000.

Ojinnaka was suspended for the first game of the regular season after violating the league's personal conduct policy, and has been a gameday inactive in the two weeks since returning to the active roster.

The 6-5, 312-pound Ojinnaka was chosen in the fifth-round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Syracuse, and has started 12 games in the NFL.
