Falcons Reach Deal With 1st Round LB Sean Weatherspoon

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that Atlanta Falcons first-round linebacker Sean Weatherspoon has agreed to terms on a five-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

A three-year starter at the University of Missouri, the 6-1, 239-pound weak-side linebacker was a tackling machine, racking up 413 tackles, including 43.5 for a loss, in a 53-game career. Weatherspoon added 12.5 quarterback sacks, five forced fumbles, and picked off four passes for the Tigers, returning two for touchdowns.

Weatherspoon showed off the speed (4.52-40) to be a sideline-to-sideline defender, and the strength (34 reps on bench press) to take on and shed blockers at the next level.

Chosen with the 19th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Weatherspoon brings a lot of versatility to the linebackers corps. Weatherspooon will compete with Stephen Nicholas for the Falcons' starting strong-side linebacker job this summer, and could see time in nickel packages next to middle linebacker Curtis Lofton.
