Dolphins Shopping WR Ted Ginn

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports the Miami Dolphins are shopping former first-round wide receiver Ted Ginn around to the rest of the league, with the Dolphins eyeing a potential up from the 12th pick to select Clemson running back C.J. Spiller.

Since being chosen with the ninth overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, Ginn has yet to develop into their premier wide receiver his draft status expects to be. A starter in 35 of his 48 career games, Ginn has 128 receptions for 1,664 yards and five touchdowns, and has added 124 yards and two touchdowns as a runner.

Ginn's main impact in the NFL has come as a return specialist, where the former Ohio State star has averaged 23 yards on 147 kick returns, and 8.7 yards on 36 punt returns. Ginn has returned three punts and kicks for touchdowns during his career, and tied an NFL record by returning two kicks 100+ yards for touchdowns in the same quarter in a 30-25 win over the New York Jets last season, which helped Ginn earn AFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors for the month of November.

That the Dolphins are shopping Ginn is a bit of surprise, considering what head coach Tony Sparano said about the team's wide receiver position during last month's league meetings in Orlando.

"We feel strongly about some of the young players in the group that haven't played as well," Sparano said. "We want to give them a chance to play. I just know that the Davone Besses and the (Brian) Hartlines and these players, (Greg) Camarillo and Teddy (Ginn), they're not sitting there settling. I know how hard they're working. I feel good about where they are.

"Do we want people to come in and compete? Absolutely. Do they know there's going to be someone in there to compete whether it's a younger player or the young players already on this roster? I'd say yeah. Sure they do. they know that. That's what we're festering down there right now. It's a competition. No job is safe. You gotta go into training camp and you gotta show us."

From the sounds of La Canfora's report, Ginn might not get that chance.
