Dolphins Activate DE Phillip Merling

The Miami Dolphins have activated defensive end Phillip Merling from the "Reserve/Non-Football Injury" list, Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald reports.

Quarterback Patrick Ramsey has been waived to add Merling to the 53-man roster.

After a rocky off-season, which included an arrest for domestic battery in May, Merling ruptured his Achilles' tendon during a non-football workout on July 22.

Battery charges against Merling were dropped earlier this month.

The 32nd overall pick (2nd round) of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Clemson, Merling has started four of 32 games for the Dolphins over the last two seasons, and had been projected to be a starter on Miami's three-man front.

The 6-4, 295-pound Merling has been credited with 59 tackles and 3.5 quarterback sacks during his career, and added a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown during his rookie campaign.
