Chester Pitts to Start Working Out For Teams Next Week

Free agent guard Chester Pitts will begin workouts for NFL teams next week.

Free agent guard Chester Pitts will begin workouts for NFL teams next week, Pitts' agent, Andrew Kessler, tells Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune.

Chosen by the Houston Texans with the 50th overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft out of San Diego State, Pitts started 114 consecutive games for the Texans before suffering a serious knee injury during a win over the Tennessee Titans. Pitts was in the final year of his contract.

When the free agent signing period began in March, Pitts was still recovering from knee surgery, and was unable to pass the required physical before signing with an NFL team.

Pitts, who has stated that he'd like to remain with the Texans, visited the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, and Detroit Lions, and has added the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles to his list of potential suitors.

The 49ers used two first-round picks on offensive linemen, including one on Idaho guard Mike Iupati, so their interest in Pitts has likely vanished. The Lions addresed their need for a guard by acquiring restricted free agent Rob Sims from the Seahawks.

Seattle, where Pitts' former offensive line coach Alex Gibbs now works, has been idenfitied by Pitts as the "best fit" for his services. However, the Seahawks signed former Broncos guard Ben Hamilton to a one-year deal worth over $2 million to start at left guard and help first-round left tackle Russell Okung assimilate to the NFL. With 2009 second-round pick Max Unger scheduled to play right guard, and a dearth of guard prospects leftover from the Tim Ruskell Era, the most the 'Hawks may be willing to offer is a reserve role for one season at the veteran minimum.

Zulgad also notes that the Vikings are unlikely to participate in today's supplemental draft.
