The Slocum Special

Numerous sources are reporting that the Green Bay Packers have selected Shawn Slocum as their new special teams coordinator.

After interviewing several other candidates coach McCarthy decided to promote the former Packer assistant to the position.

Slocum spent the last several years working under former Packer special teams coach Mike Stock.

Considering the outstanding job delivered by Stock, I cannot for the life of me understand why the Packers would be interested in his prodigy.

I'm calling this questionable move number one of 2009.

I am surprised that no one else finds this promotion a little strange. Anyone have some good inside info on this guy, from everything I have heard he has helped develop the younger guys but... I am not sold.

"I think Shawn Slocum is an excellent coach," McCarthy said. "I just think the response in the building was evident, from his fellow coaches, the people in personnel and throughout, and the players, the feedback from the players, how excited everybody is for Shawn to put his blueprint on the special teams. I clearly thought he was the best choice for that position."

I think special teams coach is overrated anyway. Can anyone name even one other special teams coach in the league? I know the Patriots usually have good special teams, but that's because they have good players and Bill Bellichick plays some starters on the special teams. Nobody gets promoted from special teams coach to head coach, and yet it's not uncommon for position coaches to get hired as head coaches. There is very little scheming to do with special teams, as far as I can tell. It's more about motivation and fundamentals. Stay in your lane, block your guy, kick the ball really hard, etc. So if Slocum is a well-respected guy and a rah-rah kind of coach, he'll probably be good enough. I think the performance of the special teams is mostly determined by the personnel and how the head coach chooses to use them.

I actually tried to think of a special teams coach in the league and I could not.
