General Info:

Zacch Pickens was born on March, 06, 2000 in Anderson, South Carolina, where he attended high school and collected 87 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks as a senior and was ranked a five-star player by all recruiting services. Although he did not start as a true freshman at South Carolina, he played a lot of snaps and was an honorable mention Freshman All-American. For the 2020 season Pickens started seven games, while coming off the bench the first three games. For his Junior year the former five-star athlete started every game and had a career high in sacks and was named the most improved player on the defense. Returning for his senior year the South Carolina native started every game, and was named a team captain, the MVP of the defense, and was also invited to the Senior Bowl. He was named All-SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years he was at South Carolina

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Pickens has the ideal build for the modern NFL defensive lineman with a thick, well developed lower body. The former five-star recruit has the size and strength to play up and down the line, and can play both the run and pass. Off the snap the South Carolina native is very explosive, as he is usually the first defender to make contact with the offensive linemen. There are plenty examples on film of him tossing offensive linemen to the ground. The Senior Bowl invitee has solid short area quickness to shuffle his feet and go from the A gap to the B gap and vice versa, he has even beaten blockers to a gap. He has developed an effective swim move, using his quick and strong hands. When the former team captain’s technique is right, he is a load to handle off the snap with his natural explosiveness and strength; he does well holding the point of attack. When Pickens uses his 34 1/8th” arms he can be very difficult for offensive linemen to deal with. The native of Anderson, SC has shown on film to be continuously working his hands, they don’t stop.

Weaknesses

Pickens has yet to develop a diverse pass rush set, he usually just tries to bull rush. His motor does not run as hot as you would like. While a versatile player, Pickens has mostly played 1-tech, 2i, and 2-tech in his career. The former Gamecock can struggle at times against double teams, putting his use as a nose tackle in question. Pickens can also come off the snap too high at times and get pushed back and or stalemated by the offensive lineman. Pickens does lack long speed; he is not a player that’s going to chase too many plays down past the line of scrimmage. He doesn’t always use his 34” arms to their full potential. Once the three-year starter gets going in one direction it can be difficult for him to change direction sometimes. The former five-star recruit also has a little bit of baby fat that could be worked off, it would probably help his agility.

Fit with the Packers:

Zacch Pickens has one of the higher upsides of the defensive linemen in this draft with his size, strength, and explosiveness but, he just has yet to get close to it. The encouraging sign is the last two seasons he showed signs of improvement. He played better against the run in 2022 versus 2021, was better able to get off blocks, and started developing as a pass rusher in 2021. If he can continue to work on the little technical aspects of his game like developing more pass rush moves, counters, playing with a better base, keeping his pads low, etc., he could be a dominant force on the defensive line. He would be a great fit in Green Bay, probably in the 2nd – 3rd round. The former Gamecock would probably need to spend his rookie season as a backup developing, and then blowing up probably in year three.

I think we need another big body, and he could be a good rotational addition at DE. We need to improve against the run and it starts upfront.

I'm hoping this is the year they draft a true 3-4 SE type, been hoping it for years actually. This guy definitely fits the new prototype for size. Colby Wooden is a little lighter at 284 lbs but ran a 4.84 today and has very good strength. Also ran a lot of stunts and caused OLs a lot of problems with them. PFN had him as a 5th rounder but I really doubt he lasts that long now. Gervin Dexter would be my ideal DE pick but he's going lowest, high 2nd IMO. Old school 3-4 DE size with new school speed and played at 3T quite a bit too. 4.88 at 300+ is moving right along.

A quick check shows Pickens played all of 3 snaps at 5T. Dexter played 107 and Wooden played 131. Wooden had a pretty impressive year; 3 snaps at NT(played 76 snaps there the year before), 259 snaps in the B gap, 131 at 5T, 253 at Edge and 5 snaps at off ball LB. I think he's mainly going to be a 5, 4i, 3 guy but someone you could line up at Edge occasionally, mainly to stunt inside. He did weigh in at only 273 lbs but I just don't think he has the pressure numbers that would make you think he could make a career out of playing outside. Like the fact he said he's comfortable playing both and he likes to take advantage of guards using his agility.

As long as he isn't Dean Lowry 2.0 I like him. Personally I think DT will likely be addressed in round 4 or 5, as WR, TE, EDGE, and S are bigger needs. Maybe we take Woolen, Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin or Mississippi St. DT Cameron Young then

Woke up at 3:30 AM to check on the Labrador. He just turned 13. He said make these picks: PFN and I'm moving 2024 picks.
#15 Broderick Jones OT to fill in the right flank.
#31 Uzomah Edge to sack the QB.
#45 Kraft TE
#78 Benton DT
#116 Harrison Edge
#151 Charlie Jones WR like Edelman knows how to get open for the first down conversion. They passed over Renfro in 2020 for Keke. They also sailed right past Van Ginkle who had a solid senior year for Badger.

#171 Durham TE
#225 Herbig OLB
#234 Tinsley WR
#244 Durden DT
#256 Ben Sims TE
#259 Dan Scott S
Is Dexter another Calais Campbell or Wilkins? Dexter Lawrence another Clemson guy.

If Benton shows in rd three, grab him. Inside pass pressure and get at least two more for the edge rusher. 34 sacks does not win a SB.

5 tech guys can be flexed to DE with four guys hand-in-the -ground. I agree, draft guys that have been trained and play the edge standing up. I'm staying with Felix.

Agree that Dexter would be a good pick up but at that draft position, he will be competing against an edge rusher, TE, or safety. I think Pickens fits the 4-3 better than what the Packers run. I didn’t see what Mazi (sp?) the DT from MI ran but he has the size, performance, and athletic ability to be that Dt/DE Green Bay seems to like.

Pickens fits the 3-4 better. He is a lighter DT, good for a 3-4 DE

Forget the 3-4. They need guys who are fast out of the blocks as DTs. Benton has the bend and low Pad Level of a wrestler. Use 4-2/4-3 looks. Send smoke signals to Barry.

He seems like a good fit for the Packers "draft and develop" philosophy. The problem being, I'm not sure if I trust the coaches to develop anybody on defense, in particular. The DC is second rate, and the defensive line coach was only named to the position last year, so he lacks experience. So, Pickens sounds like a good pick. But anyone who needs development could be wasted if the staff is unable to motivate and tap into the draftee's talent.

How smart can the d-line coach be when he sat Wyatt all year until the last couple games. Guess what, he played well when he got to play. You don't become an all american at Georgia by accident. Lowery is a consistent d- lineman, consistently below average. Ist round picks should be playing or someone really screwed up that pick. I think Wyatt will be good but I still would have taken Watson with that 2nd 1st round pick, or ideally trading back to the end of the 1st and taking him there. Thus getting extra early picks and not burning picks to trade up in 2nd. My choice for DT was Travis Jones-U-Conn and he was taken @ 76 in 3rd round. He was rated the same as Wyatt and we could have gotten him late 2nd. As for this year Mazi Smith or the Wisconsin guy Keannu Benton in 2nd or early 3rd. Later round guys Pickens, Wooden, Durden-N C State, Stills-WVU, or the big Western Kentucky guy.

I had Watson @ #22 and Wyatt #29 on the final mock. Round two picks would then be preserved for a TE/Edge guy and Abe Lucas as the RT. He started for Carroll all season.
