Woodson Presumably Paid $4 Million Roster Bonus

Cornerback Charles Woodson's $4 million roster bonus was due on Thursday Apr. 12.

With the Packers having some of the least salary cap room in the NFL and several players with upcoming expiring contracts that could be due extensions, it was thought that Charles Woodson could be asked to restructure his recently due $4 million roster bonus.

According to Brian McIntyre of Mac's Football Blog, Woodson's bonus was due on Thursday Apr. 12, 2012, the 30th day of the league year.

With no news of a contract restructuring––or Woodson's release for that matter––it's presumed the Packers paid his rather sizable bonus.

By asking Woodson to restructure his bonus and spread it over the remaining years of his contract, the Packers could have saved additional salary cap space this year, money that could have been used to sign this year's rookie class, any more free agents, or sign players currently under contract to extensions.

It's not known whether the Packers even approached Woodson about restructuring his contract.

The Packers could create salary cap space by either cutting or restructuring the contracts of veterans Chad Clifton and Donald Driver who are both due roster bonuses in the July through September timeframe.

If either Clifton, Driver or safety Nick Collins were to retire, the Packers would similarly gain salary cap space as well.

As of the most recent report, the Packers were approximately $3.4 million under the salary cap.

High-profile players currently under contract that could be deserving of an extension include wide receiver Greg Jennings, linebacker Clay Matthews and quarterback Aaron Rodgers among others.

The way I see it, the Packers could very well have paid the 4 million or asked Wood to restructure. In any case they haven't said anything about the subject :/

On a related subject, what are the Packers doing with Clifton and Driver? If they're gonna keep them around, don't they at the very least have to ask them to restructure? Do we know if any such conversations have taken place?
