Wondering If Zombo Has Been Placed On Injured Reserve

Wondering If Zombo Has Been Placed On Injured Reserve

UPDATE: The news out of Green Bay is that practice squad safety Anthony Levine has been placed on injured reserve, not Zombo.

Rookie outside linebacker Frank Zombo was the only player reportedly not taking part in practice on Wednesday as the Green Bay Packers prepare to take on the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship on Sunday.

According to Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette:

Zombo has not played since the Dec. 12 game at Detroit, when he sprained his knee. It appears Erik Walden will make his fourth straight start at right outside linebacker.

With news that that the Packers have signed wide receiver Antonio Robinson to their practice squad today, I've had some followers on Twitter speculate that Zombo has been placed on injured reserve.

The rationale is that as of last week, the Packers practice squad was full at eight players. In order to make room for Robinson, the Packers have to make a corresponding roster move.

If Zombo was placed on injured reserve, there's a possibility that another player was elevated to the 53-man roster to take his place (linebacker Curtis Young would make sense), leaving room for a spot on the practice squad.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday that "has a chance" of playing this week and would undergo testing on Tuesday, but it looks as if the testing didn't go well enough to practice today.

Of course, it's entirely plausible that the Packers have placed another player on injured reserve as well.

In other practice news, left tackle Chad Clifton and safety Atari Bigby were said to be limited today.

I believe Walden is better than Zombo anyways, Zombo didn't do as much damage as Walden can.

I wonder if Zombo is better against the run though

Zombo set a very strong, stable edge when he was healthy and active, where as Walden is a liability in the run game to some extent.

There's no doubt, Zombo is the preferred man if you're looking to stop the run. It would be ideal to have both Walden and Zombo active and up on gameday- Zombo as your meat and potatoes guy, while Walden could be used situationally on passing downs.

Good analysis.
