Wolf: Jennings Could Be Best 'In Green & Gold'

When Corey and I were at Fan Fest last March, nothing made me more nervous than getting to meet Ron Wolf. This is the man responsible for basically saving the franchise I had grown up knowing would never win a Super Bowl, the man responsible for the team I loved so much no longer being a running joke when it came to the NFL.

Needless to say, this is a man who I pay attention to when he has something to say. And he said something pretty interesting to Bob McGinn of the Journal-Sentinel (sorry, sub required):

...if Jennings takes advantage of his God-given talent, he could be the best receiver ever to wear green and gold.

That's a bold statement. Like I say, I love me some Ron Wolf. He's just lucky Don Hutson wore blue and gold. ;)

Those two catches Jennings made in the Arizona game were Harry Houdini-like.

It's going to be lots of fun watching Greg and Aaron light it up in the years to come.

Speaking of Don Hutson, I think he is the best receiver of all time, based on the way he dominated his era. I consider Babe Ruth the best baseball player of all time for the same reason.

Jennings is good, but he's no Bill Schroeder. Serious though. The dude averages 16 yards per catch in his career. That is nasty.

Even in the modern era, Jennings is not Lofton or Sharpe. I just don't see it.
---
In fact, is Wolf just trying to take a back-handed swipe at Sharpe, a player that must have pissed him off once or twice?

Not to mention Hutson played D and was also a kicker.

I think this year, especially early we never maximized our receiving talent due to the deficiencies of the O-line. MM had to game plan not to the receiver's strengths, but what the O-line was able to sustain.

I honestly believe if we do not get a solid veteran left tackle in a trade, yes we are going to have to give up something, this team with the harder schedule next year will be lucky to finish 9-7 with an outside chance at 7-9. Ron Wolf will be able to make the same statement about Jennings again next year because A-rod will not have the time to get him the ball.
Rookies will not be the answer next year, and it is a toss up if Clifton/Tauscher can stay healthy. We got very lucky this year with O-line, much of that I atribute to the easy shedule early, Lions, Browns, Rams. I don't see those kind of teams on the schedule next year.

... working 'for' a bit different than working 'as' ... TT has a way to go to match his mentor IMO. Not everybody can be a legend, no matter how much we want them to be.

Well, I guess the key word is the "if" that starts Wolf's statement. I seem to remember #85 having the dropsies early in the season (and throughout) and everyone blogging about what was going on (e.g. contract). Agree with Mark that his two catches last Sunday were sick good. Just hope he finds the consistency.

" He’s just lucky Don Hutson wore blue and gold. ;) "

That gave me a good laugh.

I know that top 10 lists don't mean a thing, but I find it disturbing that you rarely if ever see Hutson in them. HE INVENTED THE PASS PATTERN FOR GOD SAKES! His numbers if equated to a 16 game season rival those of Jerry Rice, if not best them.
_____
I find it hard to believe that Jennings was/is better than Sterling. Had Sterling's career not ended prematurely, he might just have been as good as Hutson :) or Rice. The guy had it all.. Size, Speed, Strength, & hands. Jennings is good, but regardless of how his career turns out. He will never be the complete WR that Sterling was IMO.

Slightly off topic--a couple points from McGinn's article. First- we had THIRTY-TWO special teams penalties!?!?!?! Oh my God. Secondly, Darryn Colledge is high on every single list of negative statistics. We need to replace this guy. And no offense to Ron Wolf, but Sterling was an absolute monster. I'd take him over Jennings.

Jennings gets respect from all over the place. He does have the knack to play the position, and he's already been compared physically to Jerry Rice- too small, too slow, etc, but just finds a way to produce regardless.. Larry Fitzgerald apparently believes that Gregg has more god-given talen than he does himself per their text-message communications ('That's why I have to work harder than you do' writes Fitzgerald) , and has told the press that he watches tons of film on Jennings because he tries to emulate his route-running and his ability to make yards after the catch, which he considers to be second to none in the NFL...
.
All that being said, it sounds like there's really no reason Jennings couldn't be all that Ron Wolf- and no doubt Ted Thompson- thinks he could be.. But, as with everything, achieving that potential can be thwarted or derailed by any number of circumstances.
.
BTW, the Packers have already signed competition at Punter for Kapinos in the form of former University of Kentucky punter and kickoff specialist Tim Masthay as of Thurday, per Milwauke Journel-Sentinel.. Better than not signing anyone.

Jennings has the best first move after the catch that I've ever seen. Seems like he always knows which way to turn. This was a bit of an off year for him, though. All our WRs dropped too many passes this year. A bit of an oddity.
And for those of you who think Wolf is better than TT, just remember guys like John Micheals and Jamal "Too Small" Reynolds. Wolf was great in the later rounds, but far from it in the first.
Wolf signed Reggie and Brett, but remember, TT also got Woody and Rodgers.
And Aaron, to me it was always a foregone conclusion that the Packers would rise back to prominance someday. Thought they'd win a few more Superbowls, though. Then again, I still think they will.

TRUE THAT IRONMAN,

If you look at Hutson's #'s in relation to other WR's of his day, the discrepancy is truly remarkable!

Nerd sez, "And for those of you who think Wolf is better than TT...Wolf signed Reggie and Brett, but remember, TT also got Woody and Rodgers"
-----
Unfortunately, his other picks and coordination with MM almost got AR killed this year (most sacks) and have not brought us a playoff win in 2 years due to OL, most penalties and defensive issues. As for Favre, we are suppose to get on board with the Favre debacle because we no longer had room for a person like Favre; some old waffle ready to implode every cold December. He had that pegged! What a win if he is able to manage & negotiate contracts with Brett and AR - what a true win to have both on the team.
----
Anyhow, ironically today, that 'other washed up guy' has done something TT/MM could not do, help lead a team to another NFC Championship game (like Favre did the year he was traded) - all due partly to kicking our ass twice this year.// ... TT is no Ron Wolf.

I'd take TT over Ron Wolf any day. How are Fred Vinson and Ahman Carroll doing these days?
As for Brett, when he's playing within the system, he can still get it done. Unfortunately, he always wanted to freelance, to show MM who the boss was.

Nerdman....
-
I see, so Chilly is a better coach than TT/MM because he can do what they could not... coach or keep a legend franchise QB "w/in the system" (that says a lot for them). Perhaps MM should listen sometimes and stop looking to fire those who challenge him (e.g stadium workers). lol
-----
And I wonder what GB would have done in the playoffs and regular season with Darren Sharper or Ryan Longwell? Did we not just watch our secondary collapse and miss game deciding FGs? TT has released many 'washed up' veterans!
----
... AND yes, "Favre is stilling getting it done" (that's an understatement). I guess we will have to disagree on this one.
----
cheers
