Which Side Will Kampman Line Up On At LB?

That question goes unanswered in the reports confirming that Aaron Kampman is indeed moving to LB. And no doubt that is intentional, as the Packers look at both free agents and draft prospects. It will be interesting to see if Kampman is considered the strong or weak outside linebacker, the latter of which is traditionally the featured pass rushing position in this defense. I wouldn't be surprised if they have him penciled in at the Will in hopes they can upgrade further down the road.

Whichever side offers him the best chance to rip heads off.

JSonline already reported Lampman will be the OLB.
The question now, is who will end up at ILB --- the contest seems to be between Barnett, Hawk and Bishop.
Looks like an interesting competition from this spot.

Interesting discussion with Brian Noble today on WSSP. His concerns on Kampman are focused on pass coverage. Simply, in his seven years he has never had to back up. He's always rushed straight at someone. He said Kampman is athletic and maybe he can do this. It is the biggest concern from his point of view.

He has very little confidence that Barnett can play the ILB. Too small to take on the centers and guards. He will be mismatched on every play.

AJ was totally confused at MLB this year. Blew many plays and allowed scores. He could play the weekside ILB spot if he gets better at reaction time.

Poppinga - he chuckled.

This is all paraphrased and I hope it is close to his real thoughts.

Ron isn't pass coverage the obvious concern that everyone has with Kampman moving from to LB?

Rey Maualuga at #9 becomes ILB alongside AJ. Kampman weakside, Barnett strong side.

I'm just throwing crap at the wall to see if it will stick.

Nick,

Sure, just thought the going backward comments were simple but really hit the nail on the head. Also, his lack of confidence in Barnett playing any LB position is concerning.

scrump - I'll admit, I've been wondering about Barnett on the outside, but he seems a bit undersized, no?

I was hoping Lampman was a new Mega Man boss robot.

Is 6'2", 235 undersized for an OLB in the 3-4? He may be a little on the light side I suppose. I'm not really that well educated on typical sizes and speeds in the 3-4 I guess.

scrump - They tend to want them around the 250-260 range. I like Barnett for one of the middle spots but think he'd be overwhelmed by tackles if he had to rush the passer from the outside...

Taken from the Green Bay Press Fishwrap the other day. Regarding discussion on the new 3-4...

"The question is, who will be the other outside linebacker? The candidates on roster include Brady Poppinga, Jason Hunter, and perhaps Jeremy Thompson and Brandon Chillar. Poppinga, a strong-side linebacker the past four seasons, on paper looks like the most natural fit at 6-3 and 247, and a college career at defensive end. But the Packers never used him as an outside pass rusher until the last half of last season, and he finished with no sacks, so it’s unclear if he’d be effective enough in that role.

That means the other starter at outside linebacker probably isn’t even on the roster right now, though the new coaching staff says otherwise.

“I don’t know (who it will be),” said Kevin Greene, the new outside linebackers coach, “but they’re here.”

Actually I did read it, Aaron. In fact, I had already posted it to IPB before coming here. And, I still wish we were able to edit our own postings, like most other blogs.
=============================
At least one other Press Pundit has stepped up and made a few bold predictions as to who could end up playing where, after everyone quits the hiccup about Kampman. And, Jeremy Thompson was slated as Kampman's backup at OLB
===========================
As for the others - the "suggestion(s)" are -
1. NT = Pickett, then Cole
2. RE = Jenkins / Montgomery / Malone
3. L-OLB = Kampman / Thompson / Hunter
4. L-ILB = AJ Hawk / Lansanah
5. R-ILB = Nick Barnett, then Desmond Bishop
Barnett versus Bishop - one to watch
6. R-OLB = PopPinga, then Chillar
Same here - one to watch, but the hype is for PopPinga's speed and tenacity - if we can remove the over-pursuit issue, this one's in the bag.
===================================
The reasoning(s) seem valid enough - of course, the competition will be the thing to watch, as we all already know, no one's job is safe in this Scheme conversion. Not to mention those who arfe standing out in the Draft -
1. NT - BJ Raji / Boston College
2. CB - Malcom Jenkins / Ohio State
3. DE - Everette Brown / Florida State
==============================
Now, I'm not one for drafting a Cornerback all that high and we do have Tramon Williams as a viable backup for either side if one of the Veterans goes down - a lower (5th?) CB pick doesn't mean we won't find value-add in it. As long as he's 6ft or a bit taller with big hands. If Naji is there, I would grab him as the replacement for Pickett - no question.
==========================
One thing is sure - Kevin Greene and Darren Perry (both) should be able to bring the best out of the crew we already have - we aren't the oldest team in town, right?
=============================
I've already slated Bigby as the Paclker's version Polamalu - they are practically the same size - the only real difference is Polamalu's seniority - and after watching Polamalu at Lambeau in 2005, I think Bigby should be able to grab the highlight reels fairly easily.
=============================
