What Can the Packers Still Do This Season

Extra playing time for the young players might be important moving forward

The Green Bay Packers season is essentially over. The team sits at 3-6, and they would need to win at least six of their next eight games to have a realistic shot to get to the playoffs. That scenario doesn't look probable considering how bad the team - and especially the offense - is playing, plus how difficult the remainder of the schedule is.

The trade deadline has also passed, and even though they should have been sellers, they didn't make any moves - and the moves they wanted involved using future capital to acquire weapons for Aaron Rodgers, as the Packers reportedly tried to trade for DJ Moore, Chase Claypool, and Darren Waller.

If this year's team is bad and they can't acquire future capital either, what can possibly be done in the next eight games that can help the franchise move forward? The best answer is probably to give young players more playing time and test things that could be useful beyond this season.

Offense

The most important thing for the offense, being Rodgers the quarterback in 2023 or not, is finding weapons. It's clear that Sammy Watkins is not the answer. Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan will be unrestricted free agents. So, even if they are among the best players available now, it makes more sense to expand the snap count and the target share of guys like Romeo Doubs (if and when he's healthy again), Christian Watson (when healthy), Samori Toure, and Amari Rodgers.

Maybe the immediate production suffers a little bit, but it’s important to give those players tape to correct real issues, experience on the field, and also the chance for the front office to have a clearer picture of them.

The same logic also applies to the offensive line. David Bakhtiari is a major question mark for the future, so it might be better to establish Zach Tom as the full-time starter at left tackle and see if he is the answer moving forward.

Defense

Most of the logic above is valid to the defensive personnel too. There is no good reason to keep playing veterans like Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed, who won't be in Green Bay for much longer. Devonte Wyatt and Jonathan Ford must play more and learn on the fly.

But for the defense, there's also a coaching consideration. Joe Barry clearly isn't the answer. Units coordinated by him have never been in the top 20 in the NFL in DVOA, which includes previous jobs in Detroit and Washington. The Packers defense this year is obviously playing less than the talent-level would indicate, so it will be hard for the Packers to justify bringing Barry back in 2023.

If that's the consideration, the Packers should anticipate the evaluation period. Moving on from Barry as soon as possible and promoting Jerry Gray to interim defensive coordinator would allow the unit to go through schematic adjustments, so some pieces would have the opportunity to play different roles. It would also be useful to evaluate Gray himself, who would have the opportunity to be the full-time DC if the unit improves significantly.

Front office

In 2018, the Packers fired Mike McCarthy with four games remaining in that season. Those last games were used by Brian Gutekunst, in his first year as the Packers general manager, to assess who could be useful in 2019 and beyond. That's why, for instance, they signed wide receiver Allen Lazard from the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad. And they may do something similar in 2022.

Without realistic chances to go to the playoffs, there's no reason to keep veterans on one-year deals on the 53-man roster, so it opens up space to sign and test younger players. Hopefully, the front office can find one or two useful pieces for the future.

The Packers missed several opportunities to add extra capital and think about the future, but there are still changes to be made that would put Green Bay in a better position for the next seasons, whichever the scenario may be. It’s not what the initial plan was with this roster, but that plan is long gone at this point.

Yes, agree, but does the Front Office and Coaches have the courage to do that? Especially with Love. Will he see at least a 4th quarter or more? I don’t see that kind of courage from them. Status Quo is all they seem to know.

"does the Front Office and Coaches have the courage to do that? "

Nope. Next question.

Murphy & Gutey got down on bended knee and begged Rodgers to return and in return awarded him the richest contract in the NFL, 4 years $200,000,000.

Murphy, who promised Super Bowl titles, will now fade away until he retires in 2.5 years which is the Packer way of doing things. No need to be proactive, much need to celebrate mediocrities like Mark Murphy.

As for Gutey, he is a cornered rat. He signed Rodgers who turns 40 next year and provided him with the worst receivers in the NFL.

And if he replaced Rodgers, he'd have to expose Jordan Love to the world and that would only remind everyone how Gutey screwed up the 2020 draft.

Look for Gutey to be shown the door when Murphy finally departs in 2025 and look for a long, long re-build to finally get started then.

Great time to be a Packer fan but remember they won a Super Bowl ... in 2010.

I thought it was 3 years $150,000,000. But, point taken.

This "idiot" has an MBA as well as a Law Degree from Georgetown. He was also a players rep to the NFLPA in addition to being an All-Pro safety while playing with Washington in the 80's.

I would be curious to know what your qualifications are to call him an idiot. They must be pretty lofty.

Maybe try to make your point without the juvenile name calling.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Dallas game sees Aaron benched during the triumphant return of Big Mike? Perhaps while on the short end of a 35-3 score at halftime? Would that be enough to get er done? Or would a water boy be the fall guy? Maybe a cheerleader?

Nope. So much better to head into the off-season with GM12 running the ship onto the shoals

If only the trade deadline was this week, they would have to be sellers.

In a couple weeks when they are officially eliminated, put Rodgers on IR with whatever "injury" justifies it and see what we have in Love. The same goes with other veterans (Bak). Its the only way Love gets starts, because we don't want to hurt any feelings or give any illusion of a benching.

Jordan Love is not the answer, but if fans want to see what he can do then play him. But the results will be the same or worse. The problem is not the QB its goes much deeper then that. You need to get rid of the GM he has strapped this team with a lack of talent. Time to move on from Gute and bring in a new GM for the rest of the season. Gute's first round draft choice J love who he traded up to get has done absolutely nothing to help this team. Horrible draft decisions have hurt this team along with poor free agent acquisitions. I blame the front office for the condition this team is in...

If Love sucks who cares? We suck now—the odds are we will have lost 7 in a row at least by then—and the way becomes clear to seeing we have to move on. In that scenario I’d give Etling the last game or so. If he’s average, then we can live with him while we have no cap and draft behind him and our picks will be high in both cases.

If he’s good, then the questions start getting interesting because we can’t guarantee moving Rodgers and we might have to trade him and give away a young starter at QB for picks. No one does that in the NFL, but we couldn’t afford his option or to extend with Rodgers and our other dead cap. That, absent incredible fortune in the draft, would be a true indictment of the idiocy for a decade and beyond.

"because we can’t guarantee moving Rodgers and we might have to trade him and give away a young starter at QB for picks."

Whoa, hold on there Pilgrim. Love isn't getting traded, he's our starter next year. Probably at least once or twice this year.

When this season ends, there are not infinite paths.

The most likely, IMO, is that Rodgers retires and we move forward with Love.
The second most likely is that Rodgers wants to keep playing and we arrange for him to do that somewhere else.

IMO, he's finished and he should be smart enough to realize that this is the last rodeo. He can play the end out in a way that leaves a good memory behind. He has an injury that's a plausible excuse. He can play the part of engaged supporter of his successor. He can make a fantastic transition to his next career. He can do that.

Or, he can make a different choice, and run the risk of leaving a bad taste behind him. For what? It doesn't profit him. Rodgers is a smart guy, and IMO, he'll figure it out.

Teams weren't exactly knocking down the Packers doors to try and pry Love loose in a trade this year...probably because all those scouts know he's nothing but mediocre...and its that easy to move an old 50mill QB hey...if people think Gutes is a bad GM take a look at all the keyboard GM's...holy wah...

Could anyone present a cap-based solution for how GB can keep Love next year? He's due the 5th year 1st round QB tender (~20M) in May 2023. AR BETTER have made his decision if he's returning to the Pack for 2023 before Love's 5th year option timeline deadline!!!

If you keep AR and Love, then you're capping the QB position around 65M+. How can you build a competitive team around that?

If you trade AR or AR retires, you're back to paying ~50M for the QB position in 2023 (Love's 20 + AR's accelerated cap hit of 30M+). I'm ball-parking these numbers but you get the idea.

Is there another solution to keeping Love in 2023 (at less than 50M paid out for the QB position) short of extending Love for multiple years with a low 2023 cap number in order to field a competitive team around him? That would be a big leap of faith in Love based on not much game tape.)

If you let Love go after (auditioning him with a number of starts) this season, you've wasted him (you won't get much in trade value and knowing he's going to be a UFA - as Pack wouldn't pick up Loves 5th year option), no team would give more than a 5th rounder for him. Then the Pack is left banking on AR; knowing that AR will be year-to-year the next 1-3 years and w/o fielding a team more competitive that the current team (partly due to AR's cap number). This condemns the Pack for the remainder of AR's career as being a 'meh' team - certainly not competing for a super bowl. When AR hangs it up, has no Love, no AR and is starting from scratch at QB.

Has the window already closed on Love's future with GB? They would have to really like what they see in him over his next 3+ starts this season to justify paying him the 20M next year. (Given the state of the current offense, how can you properly/fairly evaluate him anyways???) Starting this off-season, you have Love, being paid 20M for 2023, playing on a 1-year deal. Once again, you give a QB leverage -- poised for UFA after 2023, he has the option to leave GB after 2023 season with GB getting nothing. GB is either 'forced' to extend Love's 1-year contract well before the 2023 season ends (again, not knowing what you really have in him nor how he can perform in the preferred MLF more RPO-based offense). However, not extending him beyond 2023 creates a huge team distraction during the 2023 season if Love is left playing on a disappearing one-year contract. Has the front office thought this through?

To keep Love, pay him his $2.3M base salary for 2023 ($3.94M cap number). That's not a problem, so there is no difficulty in keeping Love for 2023. Keeping him for 2024 is the problem.

Does GB want Love for 2024?

To guarantee Love's presence in 2024, GB would have to pick up his 5th year option at roughly $20M. That's a hard no, at present, but an answer that could change if Love gets some starts over the next 8 games. It is the same issue as Savage presented, except we saw Savage play well for half a season (and poorly for longer periods of time), and the consequences are two and a half times larger ($8M for Savage times 2.5 = $20M).

The other way to keep Love is to not pick up his 5th year option and allow him to reach free agency and then just bid on him.

Playing Love, "But the results will be the same or worse." How's that? A L is a L. Play the guy to see if he can play. You need tape on the guy if the Diva decides to come back (hoping not) so you can trade JL for somebody of value.

The anti-Love stuff is sad and funny at the same time.

There are 32 teams that have personnel departments that feature numerous scouts, every one of whom is more informed and more experienced in evaluating talent than I am. The consensus of these 32 competing scouting departments is the Top 5 QBs in the 2020 draft, in different orders, was Burrow, Tua, and Herbert (who were all taken in the top 6) and then Love, and then Hurts in the second round.

These guys were all taken by weaker teams, they were put on the field pretty soon, and they've had to learn under fire, and they've done pretty well. In contrast, in Green Bay we prefer to season our QBs on the bench while they observe a HOFer. It worked out pretty darn well last time and I'm betting it'll work pretty well this time, too. Patience, grasshoppers.

If Love is even the AVERAGE of that group, he'll do a good job for us.

The downvote isn't about 'appropriate'. Essentially, it means

"I don't have a reasonable argument that I could make, so I'll just smear you with a downvote". I don't have to give any reason. It can mean I disagree, or I don't like the poster, and I don't have to explain. And best of all, it's completely anonymous.

In this particular case, it looks like a divided group that either agrees with most of what he said or which disagrees with him. But again, if they'd take the time to explain, it would be helpful.

I don't think fans have seen enough of Jordan Love to form a sound opinion. I, myself, am mostly ambivalent on Love for that reason, though there are things that concern me about him. So, folks who have decided about a player on what I perceive to be insufficient data get a down vote. My concerns plus lack of data mean I wouldn't bet $20M on Love to keep him for 2024, but I am perfectly willing to keep him for 2023 (not trade him).

I agree with the rest of NJRick's comment. GB's issues are deep. For example, when the #1 WR is Allen Lazard and the #2 WR is Sammy Watkins, the other 9 guys on the field better all be possible pro bowlers.

I've posted since the Jets game for the Packers to sit Rodgers to give Love a shot to get his first win as a starting NFL QB against Washington. By now Rodgers thumb would be healed and maybe he would be playing better, but then again, maybe not. In any case they should still sit Rodgers even now until his thumb heals. Does it sound like throwing in the towel for the season, yes, it probably does. But this team needs to get some answers about whether or not Love can play.

This is another example of management and coaching not taking the necessary steps to do what is best for the team. Rodgers playing through his injury is one thing. It hasn't worked, let him sit and get better rather than going on and quite frankly embarrassing himself.

Stop this stupidity, start Love and let's at least get some answers about him for the future of this team because if Love is not the answer they will need to draft a QB with what is likely to be a very high draft pick in the 2023 draft. Thanks, Since '61

Playing Love now until Rodgers' thumb is healed or pulled from his ass is fine, but do you honestly believe it's fair to Love? The issues on the Offense are more likely to give a false read on Love, and not to the positive. Unless, of course, the many allow fantasy to take over again, and deny what is real, after the reality check just recently being accepted.

I have no issue with Love, but I do not believe him to be what many convinced themselves of him, and he certainly isn't pulling this team out of the dumpster fire it now has become.

I think it hinges on whether the O-line can get it together. No point playing him if he's going to spend the whole time running away from rushes or with his face in the turf.

Not convinced the rest of the offense (when healthy) is quite as bad as the poor protection and QB decisions are making them seem.

61, I don't see how any reasonable, rational, fan of the Packers could possibly disagree with that last paragraph. You should put that on a billboard.

I, too, thought they should take the opportunity to put Love in and see if the offense plays any better. Give him a possession or two. More if he earns it. But since that ship has sailed, Rodgers will probably play until he gets hurt worse, or until he's playing so poorly that there's no excuse left.

Personally, I don't think he'll choose that. He's a smart enough guy to know there's a better way through this endgame.

Obviously they have to play the younger players. But realistically the executive board has to take a hard look at the GM and Staff.
I think there needs to be a clean sweep. Find a new GM that believes in hard nosed in your face football.
MLF has shown he’s in over his head. Without 12 playing at Superman level he can’t even field a competitive team. Bisiaccia should stay. He has a proven track record. Obviously Barry goes with LaFluer.
They are an embarrassing team that seems coached by the quarterback. There is no hope for MLF. He is a coordinator not a HC. Even in his good seasons he blew two number 1 seeds.
Get the GM IN NOW. Guteknust has put this team in salary cap hell. He has misjudged the talent, wasted draft picks ( Amari Rodgers) and made some stupid signings.
Anything short of a clean sweep will only bring on more of this.
It’s not Lowry , it’s the GM that signed him and the HC putting him out there.
If MLF survives this they are sunk. He got his great record via Rodgers amazing three year run. That’s over and so should be the run of Mark Murphy on down.
Or maybe we shareholder’s need to pick a new executive committee.

The problem, how I see is that you'll not get any quality GM or HC who will accept messing with their authorities from the Idiot. And I doubt he has balls to change his "structure".

Also, last 3 years Packers are drafting for needs, not like they did during the TT era. That is why BG picks are little bit strange for fans. I'm sure that management understood giving AR that fat contract they can not get any star receiver. They tried to with Davante Adams and when DA refused, they were very well avare no other star receiver will come for less money to Packers.

So, they decide to additionaly add talent to the defense, by mantra that defenses wins the SB.

They pick MLF who was willing to listen and obey to the Idiot and do what the Idiot tell him. He chose Barry (worse version of Pettine) and defended Mo Drayton. RB is not his pick, but Brian Gutekunst pick.

Now, we are here where we are. All this injuries shows how players are used improperly and the schemes put them in the position to fail, not using them to their strengths.

If Packers want to cut the rebuilding period, they must act immediatelly. Because, longer they wait, train that coming will be longer and harder will be the punch.

Unfortunately, the Idiot runs the Packers business...

I really don't know if MLF is a bad coach or not. It seems he's been forced to modify his preferred offensive style to accommodate what AR wants. MLF and AR seemed to have been two dogs fighting in MLF's first year -- with the outcome being AR gets to run an offense HE'S comfortable with...but not the one MLF prefers. You could say this means MLF is a poor coach. Hell, Lombardi would never allow this! But if MLF stuck to his guns and told AR 'my way or the highway', realistically, how would that have gone over with anyone? So MLF was and now has been 'stuck'.

What I compare it to is a head coach having Favre in his final years. No matter how poorly Favre was going to play, you could never bench him b/c of Favre's amazing and very public 'consecutive games played' streak. So...a (Packer/Jets/Vikings) head coach was 'forced' to acquiesce to the QB and let him start/play whether that coach felt that was the right direction to go with or not...

Get a higher draft pick. Hopefully Gutey hits on the pick or even better we get someone new in office to make that decision

We don't have a steel Curtain. We don't have a Dooms day Defense. We don't have a good bunch of Hogs. We don't have Lombardi.
We have Rodgers! And he's not going to be any different than Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, etc, in the twilight of their careers.
I wish Rodgers had Lynn Swan, Lofton, and Tony Gonzales. But he doesn't. So the only way he can straighten the attack out. Is play the youngsters. Build the chemistry. The point Rodgers does not play with others. Must STOP! Rodgers is the face of the packers.
Rodger's must remain the investment they once believed in. Because too many question marks, can only bring more Questions.
And you can't put whats busted on Rodgers.

They will play Rodgers and the old guard past the Eagles because they are refusing to face up to the enormity of the problems and to responsibility for them, which goes right to Murphy. There is no one not culpable for key decisions thanks to him. That was a key plank of corporate governance dismantled.

After the Eagles, absent a miracle victory, there will be nowhere to hide. If they don’t move into development mode wholeheartedly the only reason will be total and indefensible denial and that will only ensure a faster meltdown and change.

Interesting. I'm tempted to bet a six pack of Lone Star on that. I think things will hit critical mass before then. Let me ponder this for a few days and see if I can risk a six pack.

First, the hand. He throws several bad balls including a couple of picks and then walks off holding his hand. He gets up from some knockdowns holding his hand.

Second, he's going to resort to what QBs do when they can't beat you with their arm; he's going to run. He's said as much. And while it's nice that he had some good runs last game, if he keeps that up he's going to get caught.

Third, we're not scoring any points. We have 8 quarters of football coming up in Green Bay and if we can't score more than 3 points/quarter then I'm pretty sure the natives are going to be restless. That's a lot of pressure for change.

There is nothing left this season except for getting the young guys the reps. Start Love after the cowboys game.
Our Qb not playing to the level of his contract, oline shattered , Very limited TE group and very poor receiving group. There are too many moving pieces in the offense this season than i have seen before in Gb history( atleast in the last 20yrs). Best case scenario someone trades for Arod this off season( which is unlikely to happen) or him retiring and us sucking up the dead cap for next yr and start building for the future.

So nothing is left to prove this year better start the rookies and get them the reps needed with our Future Jordan Love and see
if he has the tools to be a starting Qb for this historic Franchise.

Go Pack Go.

Thank you for this article. Concentrating on the present instead of moaning about the past or guessing about the future is always a more productive use of time. I must admit, I've had this feeling all morning about "what do we do now?". I mean, we have a game on Sunday. We can't just not show up.

"Offense

The most important thing for the offense, being Rodgers the quarterback in 2023 or not, is finding weapons. It's clear that Sammy Watkins is not the answer. Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan will be unrestricted free agents. So, even if they are among the best players available now, it makes more sense to expand the snap count and the target share of guys like Romeo Doubs (if and when he's healthy again), Christian Watson (when healthy), Samori Toure, and Amari Rodgers."

I'm not worried about who the QB is in 2023. We have 7 more games this year, including one in 6 days.

The "Weapons".

1) The Sammy Watkins move has failed. I'd just as soon play somebody else.

2) Doubs is injured. I don't know how much time he'll miss, but he won't play this Sunday.

3) Watson....IMO....should sit for several games. This is his second concussion in very limited action, and he should let his brain heal 110% before he plays again. If that means he misses the rest of the season, that's better than having him pick up a 3rd concussion.

4) By default, it's going to be Lazard, Toure, Amari against Dallas.

5) Jones is injured. Play Dillon and Hill and rest Jones. Jones is a guy that we have under contract for next season and would be tradeable. Dillon, too, for that matter, and he'll be in his contract season.

6) I would rank the TE room as four blockers, with Tonyan and Deguara being the two best receiving threats. I would not expect Lewis back next year.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The Elephant In The Room is the QB spot. Ken Lass says that Rodgers isn't going to be benched. He's probably mostly right, but at some point it's kind of "elder abuse" to watch him flail away impotently. I don't want to see him get a serious injury, and I don't want to see him get booed at Lambeau Field, so I'm hoping/praying that the grownups in charge work this out.

The organization has to decide after this season whether to exercise the 5th year option on Love, and I'm sure they'd like to see him play some games between now and then, so I'm unfortunately going to have to disagree with Ken Lass on this. I think the organization has reasons to get Love on the field, and that means Rodgers will be off the field. Call it a benching or whatever, but I think it'll happen.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on Watson. At this point I’d sit him down until after the bye, maybe for the year. As for Doubs, we won’t know, he could be fine or done for an extended period. Watkins I’d cut. No excuse and he’s been a non factor anyway.

I would elevate Fulgham. He can block and play the X more naturally than any other on the roster. Whether he’s good is immaterial really, since we aren’t unless we sign a Fuller type. At this point I’d use what is cheapest and most familiar with our system. I’d also elevate Kawaan Baker as a go/Gadget type. Then I’d focus on Doubs/Toure/Lazard/Fulgham as the main 4 with Toure in the slot. If Doubs can’t go then Rodgers is the slot and Toure takes Doubs role. At that point I’d promote Winfree as cover wherever, otherwise I’d use Baker as an option/Go/ST er.

That’s the best talent I see from what we have, best fitted by role. I’m not saying Fulgham, Baker, Winfree are long term answers, just saying put the best out you can and use them must appropriately. Going into a cautious hole is not an option against our upcoming opponents. Do that and we lose without even taking the field.

Wrong - The rookies must play! And Rodgers must play with them. The reps are needed. And the Rookies must learn to avoid players, who are out to kill them.
Ball Flight adjustment and chemistry must be built. Never sit your top picks.
If it was that simple to get what you want. Everyone would do it.
The 3-4-4 had to many injury set backs in Green Bay. We must bring back the 4-3-4. It's now about Longevity!!

They have the bodies to play the 4-3/4-2 sets, especially with Walker. Barry is an intractable imbecile. In today's NFL, multi-faceted defensive strategy is the rule. This guy is playing trench warfare against F-15s. The players not performing on defense have been exposed, as well as The Plan. Is The Plan inhibiting the players? Obviously, yes. Why draft Ford to sit and not bring Heflin in the mix while getting pushed all over the planet in the run stops? The safeties sit like ducks on the pond with no clue how to rotate in the zone sets. Consider maybe keying the WRs, not the QB. Best article about football in the Sporting News decades back by Jim Johnson and Belichick on defensive players, or any football player. They unanimously emphasized intelligence and leadership ability over the physical attributes. You make the call on Gutedkunst.

"As for Doubs, we won’t know".

I'm reading about a high ankle sprain. I know they take a while to heal, so he'll miss the next game or two for sure.

Right now, we're lining up Lazard, Toure, Amari. That's the Big 3 for Dallas, and probably the Titans as well.

I'm fine with Fulgham or anybody else in the rotation, as long as they know the plays and can remember the snap count. But he's not going to get more than a target or two. He'll be a decoy/blocker when he's on the field just about every time.

I think we'll probably play more double TE and fewer 3 WR. More running, less passing, try to shorten the game. It probably won't work but it's our best shot.

It's going to be Lazard, Doubs, and Rodgers that get the WR targets. They'll probably use Watkins as a blocker/decoy if he's healthy, but I don't really see him getting a lot of targets going forward.

Jones is set to count for $20 mil against the cap next year. Nobody's taking on that contract. His time in Green Bay is likely coming to an end. Same with Clark, Amos, Bakhtiari, Tonyan, Lewis, and probably some others too. Rodgers wont come back for a rebuild and thats fine. Let them all go. Get some young blood in here who might actually bring some enthusiasm to the game.

I'm using Spotrac as my source here. You should look this up because I make mistakes sometimes, but if I'm understanding this correctly, in 2023 his salary, roster bonus, and workout bonus come to $16 million, which would have to be assumed by whoever acquired him.

BUT...this is stuff that's negotiated. Perhaps a higher draft pick is available if we pick up some of it. As it stands right now, he's a $20 million cap hit and about half of that is a dead cap hit of over $9 million, plus a few million remaining from earlier restructures.

I wouldn't pull my hair out if Jones were on the team next year. Yes, we'd clear $10 million in cap space, but we'd be losing a guy who can get you 100 yards of offense and a TD (if he gets the ball). Yes, we'd get a draft pick, but we also just created another hole in the gameday roster.

"Oh, he is going to get Boo’d mercilessly"

I hope not. He's not perfect, but he's given a lot to this franchise for a long time. Every one of us has cheered something he's done.

The great comedian, George Burns, said that you want to leave the audience laughing. In other words, leave people wanting more.

Whatever else he is, he's a smart guy and maybe he's going to figure out he should let his thumb rest for a while. Right now, his play is convincing 31 other teams that they shouldn't trade for him. If he took a game or two off, and Love really struggled, then he could come back in and be The Hero for a couple of games and the season would end and everybody could turn to the next page.

I hope he doesn't get booed. An expression I've heard (and completely agree with) is that when the wheels come off, they come all the way off. Rodgers demeanor in the game yesterday really reminded me of Marino's last game, with the arm waving and the "WTF" facial expressions. Marino kind of fell off overnight. Payton Manning really wasn't himself at the end.

The bad throws yesterday, IMO, I would describe them as "not quite enough arm". The failure on the tackle-eligible. The failure to Doubs. The throw that hit the helmet should have had a higher release. He's not stepping into throws and he probably doesn't have the wrist snap because of his thumb and it's taking just enough off his throws to make him mortal.

It was nice to see him running a couple of times, but he's not fast and he's particularly not quick at bolting the pocket, and if he makes a habit of trying, he's going to get caught.

I'd like to thank him, and I'd like to encourage him to step off the stage.

I don't think this is a contending team regardless, but still having Adams on the team likely translates to more wins. Who knows if the thumb is causing Rodgers to wildly underthrow guys on a consistent basis, but not seeing wide-open receivers week after week after week is uncharacteristic. It's like he keeps expecting to find Davante on the field somewhere.

Because it's a fact that every team needs a Wr1 which the defenses has to scheme up to which create the opportunities for the other players. Yes Championship Defense is a must to win the Lombardi but a Wr core is equally important to make it to the playoffs.

The Front office has neglected that for a while and results can be seen now. Yes it is not the only problem in Green Bay but definitely it is one of the problems.

"Because it's a fact that every team needs a Wr1 "

It's a fact that you need blockers. It's a fact you need a running game. It's a fact you need a QB.

It's a fact that the Packers lost the Championship game in 2019 to a team that only completed 10 passes. It's a fact that lots of teams with superduper WRs lose every week.

They are a piece. No more, or less, important than any other spot. People obsess over these guys.

Let me ask you a question, because I'm curious: If you could add two Pro Bowl receivers to the Packers next year, or two Pro Bowl offensive linemen, which would it be?

I think the problem started when the key coaches left the program and Matt made bad decisions in their replacements.

Offensive Coordinator left for Denver and was replaced by the offensive line Coach!

Outside Linebacker coach Smith leaves for Minnesota Vikings.

Tight Ends coach Outten went to Denver.

Quarterback/Passing game Coordinator went to Chicago.

This caused other movement within the Packers coaching ranks. I feel Matt has made some major mistakes in the selection of new coaches and it has shown up on the field.

I really like the look of our three young receivers. They are going to be a strong trio once they have 2-3 years under their belt. The failure this year is on Gute for not addressing this issue sooner and expecting rookies to fill the void (when they rarely do across the league). I'd like to see all three get more reps with Love and build towards the future. AR is done. Hindsight is 20/20, but a trade would have been the best thing for this team.

Nothing, and I mean nothing will change until he is gone. Not the lifeless offense, not the constant drama and controversy, not the losing. None of it will change as long as hes still around. Cancer doesnt stop being cancer. It only spreads and kills everything it touches. This team needs a breath of fresh air and a new identity. End of story.

What do the Packers do about Gary? He tore his ACL! Should they extend him or try to trade him next year? We know how history goes with the Packers and injured player extensions, but still, Gary at his best in his prime would be amazing if he can recover well and stay on the field consistently - look at how Z recovered from missing last season.

As far as what they should do, play all of the young people and bench the people who are leaving next year or are older. More playing time for the young'uns and higher draft pick! Tank by playing the young people. Trade everyone who rationally could be next off-season. Start over with the 2023 draft. Hopefully they strike gold like the Seahawks did with this past-year's draft

I honestly don't see them winning another game this season. I was predicting they'd go 6-11, but that was too generous

Let the repairs begin:

* dump Sammy Watkins, it was a stupid move in the first place, he’s done.
* more J. Deguara
* more Z. Tom, Sean Ryan and May as well put Newman back out there and see if he can actually play.
* resign, Yosh, dump, Bakhtiari, and Jenkins with their injuries and salaries. It doesn’t make sense to keep them.
* resign Lazard, he seems to be the only veteran wide receiver that can play consistently.
Dump Cobb, he’s loyal but so is a Dog!
* A trade of Rogers would be the best scenario seems he’s become a cancer with has “no” leader ship or accountability and not wanting to be here in the off-season time to go is a sign of that.
* renegotiate, Aaron Jones contract if that is unacceptable then he must go. Also his salary cap is just too high for running back, especially since the Packers don’t seem to like running backs because they never use them consistently.
* dump Steno as offensive coordinator, and reassign him to the offensive line, if he doesn’t accept it, give him his walking papers same with the wide receivers coach Vrabel.

Defense dump the outside linebackers coach and defensive backs coach. In fact, maybe dump all the defensive coaches if you can’t have a dominant defense with this group, you can’t coach. Barry has always been bad!
* Special teams, it’s time for Mason Crosby to go because of salary, search high and low for a real long snapper and for God sakes, get a damn return, man!
* Front office, Gutey has blown way too many draft choices, he has traded up for love, Amari, Burks, Savage and Watson. Not only did he waste draft picks trading up, but he blew the draft picks, OK watson maybe still is a player, but it doesn’t look like he can stay healthy and had two knee surgeries in college.
There’s an old scouting adage that says if you can’t stay healthy in college you are not going to stay healthy and the pros.
They’re not going to get rid of Gutey because they just signed him to a long-term contract and gave him a big raise. Which means they have to bring in a personnel man that knows how to evaluate talent.
*As for MLF either grow a pair & take control of your team or go!

Do you realize that you just removed the two best offensive linemen from a group that already wasn't very strong? Minus Bakthiari and Jenkins, we're looking mighty thin. Tom, Runyan, Myers, Newman, Nijman? Backed up by Hanson and Rhyan and practice squad UDFA's

I think the first step in putting a better offense on the field is going to involve keeping enough quality linemen that we can line up guys who can get people blocked.

Trading Bakhtiari is interesting. We'd take on $23 million in dead money, but would save $6 million. And we'd lose a very good left tackle. We should try to keep Jenkins, and we should probably play him at LG or C. He could be a solid player for us for another 4 years.

I'm totally certain we'll keep Gary, unless he's damaged beyond repair.

Bakh does not have a long term future with the organization and we could get some decent draft capital for him. Jenkins hasn't been the same since his injury, and we could also get some good draft capital (maybe a second for each player) if we traded him. Of course, we'd draft replacements, although Tom and Nijman, I think, are our long-term tackles, as both have shown great upside. Runyan and Myers are good, but the RG spot is the wild card. Walker and Jones are good depth at T.

I would be on the side of keeping Gary until it's more likely we shouldn't

Jenkins will be a free agent. Letting him walk might get a 4th round comp pick in 2024, but it might be a 5th rounder. Wait to see how he plays the rest of the year. FWIW, PFF gave him a 78 grade for the Lions game.

There is little to no chance Bakh stays. For one he’s good but the Durability issue isn’t going away and his cap is a minor source of relief. With a team in rebuild, there’s no logic in keeping him. He gets some value in trade, some cap relief and allows Nijman or Tom to settle. Jenkins I believe they resign. His injury hangover is passing. I think they will look to a short term rehabilitation extension with Gary now, one that gives him a chance to recover, earn incentives and Reestablish his value while containing risk and short term cap.

I was going to post something again but the fire everybody drama queens have taken over. So I will just quote Don Meredith - about this season - and I already said that we might need to move on from our DC - we cannot keep having defensive players take game changing dumb penalties and still remain in the game. Dumb penalties need to have consequences - there is a big difference between accidently contacting a QB's head or below the knee and throwing a player to the ground out of bounds or grabbing a shirt when he is just starting a route. And if you cant get that through to the player -who needs to sit for several plays - then as a coach you need to lose your job.

In any case for this year as Don would sing "Turn out the lights the party's over. They say that all good things must end. Call it a night the party's over. And tomorrow starts, the same old thing again. """

So it’s the defense’s fault they lost? The Lions have scored a lot of points at home and GB held them to only 15. You’re saying the D needed to keep them under 9?

Get real. The real problem is the 50 million dollar man.

Did I say that - where did I say that?????? there are a whole lot of reasons the O is not playing up to snuff including bad Oline play receiver issues and other issues like injuries bad play calling etc etc - and if you had read some of my other posts you would know that - but 39 - 10 over the past 3 years means something so stop being a drama queen and focus on the now - not the fire everybody and the sky is falling now and forever.

In effect, yes, you did. All you talked about was Dandy Don and the bumbling defense.

Any new DC would have the same challenge: to hold opponents under 10 points. A new DC wouldn't make a damn bit of difference because that's not the problem with this team.

The Packers can move to the future. Play the young guys and see what you got. Most likely we will be picking in the top 10 in each round so we need to know what we have and what we need. Watkins, Cobb and most likely Lazard are gone after this year. Bhaktiari - gone. Tonyan - gone. Aaron Jones - probably gone. Mercedes Lewis - gone. That is just some of the old guard on offense that won't be around.

The real problem is Mr Rodgers - problem is you can't really fix that this year or next unless you just want to bench him. He isn't nearly as accurate as he once was and still will not play within the offense. La Fleur was asked if the plays at the end of the Lions game were all designed for the throws to go to the end zone. La fleurs answer seemed to be in the not really camp. Then he was asked about Rodgers decision making on those last plays and La Fleur immediately went into the better play calling aspect. I just wish he would have went to the "it would be great if Aaron would throw to the open man instead of forcing it to the end zone every play". It played out exactly like the end of the Tampa game and the San Fran game of the last two playoff losses. It almost seems as though Rodgers really doesn't care anymore. He is just playing it out knowing he owns this team for the next year and a half. Aaron also structured his contract perfectly so that Jordan Love will not see the field until his rookie deal is over. Yes, the Packers agreed to said contract but Aaron knew they were at his mercy by that point and took full advantage of it.

Please, all the Rodgers apologists, stop it. His skills are eroding, his leadership is terrible, his contract is an albatross and he has so neutered the head coach that La Fleur has lost this team. I have seen this offense be run by many coaches and it looks nothing like what the Packers are doing. Nothing like La Fleur did in Tennessee. La Fleur has no answers because he isn't running the show and it will cost him his job at some point. Rodgers will be laughing into his hallucinogetic future knowing he screwed the Packers over like no one else could.

As much good to great things #12 has done for the Packer's brand he has done (or attempted to do) just as much harm, in my eyes.

His play no longer masks his detrimental attitude to the team and in many ways stunting their growth. He isn't the only one, but a huge part of it.

A lot of this was self-imposed. I don't want him villified but I don't feel sorry for him either.

Poster "SinceLombardi" said above MLF is an OC and I couldn't agree more...he is a poor leader that does not show well under duress. Even his rise as an OC, performance wise, was noted as questionable but he was Murph's (arrogant) pick.

Rodgers enemy year begins Jan 29, 2025...we keep him thru 2024 season if a quick rebuild is possible, then cut or hope he retires. Forcing a HC change may hasten calling it quits, but I STRONGLY feel he is now in the same boat as Favre just before he departed--he has the talent to still play at a very high level, but doesn't have the weapons. The EZ days of dominating the futile NFC North are over. Can he still be traded or even released for a rebuild? That's TGR's forte.

Gute is born on 1 energy and is also a 1 life path, most associated with aggression & leadership. He has the innate ability to lead, but as I've said numerous times, his scouting / decision making is piss poor...C / D grade level...that doesn't cut it. Could he succeed Murph? Perhaps, but he has no legacy / IT factor currently to make the jump...if he were able to fix this quickly...perhaps, but I don't see it happening given the opposing GOAT-OX-GOAT power structure of Murph-Gute-MLF. The injuries are unfortunate, next man up. I noted numerous times, how Gute should have passed on extending Bahk just prior to his enemy year. If there's one thing he's excelled at, it's compounding BIG MISTAKES.

Watkins & Amos enemy year begins next year Jan 22, 2023. Former is an obvious cut, latter let go--play the percentages.

Bottom line is, management is a reflection of the team. Take away Rodgers masquerading our deficiencies / inefficiencies and you're left with this barnboot heaving sh*tshow; we're all front row witnesses to the circus as the finger-pointing accelerates and this team self destructs.

Yesterday was very predictable. I don’t want to hear “injuries” as an excuse. Pretty obvious that we were in free fall well before yesterday’s debacle. I have long supported Gute and Coach LaFleur. However, when Davante was moved we needed play makers. All we got was some rookies and oft injured Sammy Watkins. It was Management who claimed that we had enough playmakers on offense. Clearly we don’t. On top of that, our defense has tons of top draft talent and is largely a disappointment. We still can’t stop the run. Is it the players? Is it the person drafting the players? Is it the DC? Somethings wrong. Need to figure it out. Fast.

please use him or trade him next year...this is from when MLF was at the Titans and had Henry at his disposal...."LaFleur was far from revolutionary as the Titans’ offensive coordinator—the unit finished 27th in points..”It is evident that Matt LaFleur still hasn’t figured out how to properly use Henry where his effectiveness can make an offensive impact.” Sound familiar, as in use of A Jones?? “ it’s clear that Henry hasn’t been used right and in order for the offense to take off, LaFleur must brainstorm on ways in which the team can use Henry’s abilities to produce offensive points or sustain drives.” ....still brainstorming??

That Titans offense also won 9 games and just narrowly missed playoffs cuz Lafleur engineered a dominant run game that helped Derrick Henry have his breakout after 2+ mediocre seasons. This is why Lafleur was hired: to run the damn ball. And they drafted AJ Dillon, Josiah Deguara, Kylin Hill, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, etc. to run the damn ball. But captain buttcleanser refuses to run the ball. This team could easily be 7-2 or even 8-1 right now but Rodgers refuses to let anyone else play hero. Its all about him all the time.

Yet another consideration if allowing Love to start in 2022 is the preferred direction to go...

What offense do you run? MLF (and probably Love - why he was drafted) would prefer a more RPO with mis-direction, don't they? What they have instead been running is the more traditional offense AR has been comfortable with.

So...do you suddenly make this offensive philosophical change mid-stream? With the problems the current WRs have had carrying out their current assignments, how can they be expected to (re) learn a lot of new terminology and run new plays. If this would be too big a mid-season change to make, then...

How can Love be properly evaluated running the existing offense when it's not the offense MLF will run in 2023 and beyond? This would seem a lot of projecting and supposing but not based on game performance.

The same would hold if starting Love this year is solely to audition him as trade bait to another team. That team would say...okay, I see what Love can do in an AR-type offense, but Love's designed to run a different style offense...and you're giving us no tape with which to evaluate him in those schemes.
