Wes Welker Interviews with Packers

Former NFL player and current Houston Texans assistant Wes Welker interviewed for a coaching position with the Green Bay Packers last week.

Wes Welker, the former all-star wide receiver primarily known for his time with the New England Patriots, recently interviewed with the Green Bay Packers, according to a Sports Illustrated report.

Welker currently serves as an assistant special teams coach with the Houston Texans. He was also reported to have interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers.

Welker, a five-time Pro Bowler, spent the last two years working with the Texans’ receivers under head receivers coach John Perry. The Texans’ receivers had an outstanding year, including an all-pro turn by DeAndre Hopkins, impressive breakout performances from Will Fuller and Keke Coutee and a solid veteran campaign by Demaryius Thomas, who played with Welker in Denver.

It’s assumed that Welker interviewed for the still-vacant wide receiver coaching position with the Packers, though the Packers have also yet to fill their special teams coordinator position. It seems unlikely, however, that Welker would be prepared to make such a large leap into that substantial of a role with the team. Welker could fill a role as a special teams assistant with the Packers, but one would think it more likely the Packers would hire a coordinator before bringing in assistants in that area.

Welker was an outstanding player during his 12-year career. While he first made his mark as a special teamer, he ultimately became a crucial part of a revolution of the slot receiver position in the NFL that had just about every NFL team looking for the next “Wes Welker-like” slasher.

I’m a fan of Welker and can easily see him as a receivers coach. I think he can take the young receivers to the next level, running crisp routes, coming back to the QB when in trouble, etc. I hope this comes to pass, no pun intended.

Forrest Gregg - great player, lousy coach. You never know.

Now now, Forrest did have 1981 in Cincinnati. It seems after that Super Bowl year the combination of Deacon Jones' head slaps, and heavy metals from Lake Michigan fish took their toll. Remember how his face used to twitch on the sidelines? What looked like a nervous tic was the onset of Parkinson's disease. Great player who coached a team to the Super Bowl.

His all time record as a head coach was 75-85-1. 25-37 record as Packers coach. He seemed to favor dirty players and dirty play, at least as the Packers coach. Lombardi did rate him the best player he ever coached. I do recall the tics, and Parkinson's; that may have affected his coaching and personality, as you said.

The Packers maybe should have hired him on the spot and found a place for him. Oh, and can he still play?

I like winners and I like winning. Wes Welker is a total winner believe me. You can't have enough of those guys on a team especially at the coaching level. He's respected. He'd be a perfect fit for those young receivers. They all know who he is. He would have more street cred and respect than LaFleur. Similar to Kevin Greene. Hire the man!!

I wonder if Darren Rizzi is still a possibility as ST coach. I haven't heard of him being hired elsewhere and he just got replaced in Miami.

@TomSilverstein

"This means Darren Rizzi is not going back to the #Dolphins as many speculated was the reason he turned down the #Packers. Fact is they could have had him but now he'll eventually coach against them somewhere else. #Packers have still not hired a special teams coach."

Or perhaps since he's officially been replaced, now he'll accept the deal we offered. We will see very soon.

I was a 1st team HS kicker, which makes me far more qualified to coach special teams for an NFL team than Ron Zook. The bar is pretty low. Doubt GB wants a cerebral former All-Pro WR to coach Special Teams.

Easy, Uncle Rico. When did anyone suggest Welker was cerebral? The kid received the last scholarship at Texas Tech (where he was awarded the Mosi Tatupu Award for Special Teams Player of the Year in 2003) and made a nice career for himself in the NFL. But, cerebral? 4 concussions in less than a year at any age will change your behavior, but I'm guessing Welker isn't splitting the atom anytime soon. .

As much as I want to know who the coaching staff will be, I hope that the right one gets chosen.
I really really hope we get a decent STs coach.

Welker would be a smart hire. He brings a fresh aggressive approach to the route. Route adjustment during the play was not there last season, Team was to one dimensional in the pattern.

If Wes Welker is as good a coach as he was a player he could be a big success in Green Bay. I think he would command a lot of respect from the players as well as the rest of the coaching staff. I hope Green Bay hires him before the 49er's do. Hire him now. He won't be available long before he is hired elsewhere.
