Upon Second Viewing: Packers vs. Browns Observations

It's been a few days since the Packers and Browns tangled in Green Bay's first preseason game.  I had a chance to watch the rebroadcast and review the game a second time.  I'll provide a few observations here as well as what I'm looking for during the rest of camp.

They're getting Jason Spriggs ready as quickly as possible.  I mentioned how invested the Packers should be in his success on PackersTalk.com just a few weeks ago as part of the "5 Guys that Have to be Good" series.  McCarthy and the offensive staff used Spriggs early and often, as the second round pick from Indiana was allowed to play 45 snaps.

Look for Spriggs to continue to get a high volume of snaps as the Packers take what a lot of evaluators called a "raw" prospect and try to get him as ready to back up both tackle spots as quickly as possible.  According to what we saw at the end of last season, JC Tretter is at least passable as a backup tackle, but Spriggs is the big investment, and the player that they seem keen on preparing, not to mention that Tretter currently has responsibilities at center.

Geronimo!!!! Geronimo Allison looked very impressive in full pads during a competitive game.  His size is noticeable, especially when compared to the current crop of Packers receivers. Allison has been pushing for a roster spot in camp, and did not disappoint against the Browns, showing the ability to run crisp routes.

I've long compared receiving groups (admittedly stolen from Aaron Schatz at Football Outsiders) to basketball teams.  Good groups have different positions/body types.  Randall Cobb and Ty Montgomery are the point guards, but the rest of the receivers that look to make the team are "wing" players more than anything else.  Allison could really provide the first post-up presence that the Packers have had at the receiver position since Ruvell Martin.

I'm impressed with the edge defenders.  For a team that had incredible amounts of success in the early 2010s employing street free agents across the formation from Clay Matthews, this is a deep and diverse group of edge rushers.  I think they very much have the capability to be the best group of outside rushers that the Packers have had during Capers' time with the team.

It was hard not to be impressed with "non-starters" Nick Perry, Datone Jones, Kyler Fackrell and Jayrone Elliot.  In fact, those four players seem like a useful enough rotation to "get by" in the NFL.  The fact that Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers start over them is truly the icing on the cake.  Don't be surprised on passing downs to see Perry, Jones and Peppers rushing from the inside as Matthews and another rusher scream around the edge.

Time to get Hundley back.  Poor quarterback play makes the entire offense difficult to evaluate.  Joe Callahan's final 16/23 line looks fine and dandy but that's less than 5.4 yards per attempt, which is absolutely abysmal.  Even Callahan's touchdown pass was a pitch and catch flat route to a wide open John Crockett (who had to make a minor adjustment to catch the ball).  Marquise Williams is more of an athlete at this point than a quarterback, and while I feel that there is worthwhile time to be spent developing him, at this point he's not helpful.

Brett Hundley needs reps and the Packers need Brett Hundley to get reps.  Hundley just might be one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the NFL, and Green Bay needs him to be ready in case something happens to Rodgers, but also to give the first and second string offense a real look.  I very much appreciate the Packers keeping Rodgers away from harm in the preseason, but they do need to use Hundley heavily if they're going to do that.

Carl Bradford looked pretty good. That's all I have to say about that.

I was surprised at how little playing time Martinez got.

They want to know if they don't just cut Bradford in the first group. I think he bought himself a little time.

I do understand it from an evaluation perspective. There is basically no chance that Martinez is fighting for a roster spot so I very much understand looking at B. Brown, Bradford and Joe Thomas.

Martinez has made the 53, Bradford has not.

Me too, but it appears that the coaching staff didn't want Martinez to get hurt.

I'm a little concerned about the easy teams were playing in the pre-season so far. (So Who can tackle, who can catch.?) If they can't do the job against these teams. Why have them? No one should be dropping balls now. The rust should be off for any veteran. My concern is Elliott. He needs to step up. He should be eating guys up. Fizzling Out?

Yep. PFT is also reporting that if the players in question don't agree to interviews, they will be suspended indefinitely. Now it will be interesting to watch how the Player's Union responds to this as it may turn into another legal battle similar to the Brady situation. This may get very ugly before it's all said and done

I don't think it will be a legal battle. They aren't being charged with anything other than a request to answer questions. If they refuse ti sit down with the NFL I think they have the right to suspend them indefinitely until they do. Lets expect Mathews and Peppers for be gone for a while, if they have something to hide.

Mathews and Peppers have said publicly they are willing to do the interview but the NFLPA is not allowing them to due to the fact that there is nothing in the substance abuse policy about interviewing players before there is any substantial evidence and sets a bad precedent moving forward that players are supposed to risk incriminating themselves through an unjustified interview when there is no evidence of any wrong doing other than recanted hear say. They must not have anything to hide if they are willing to meet but he union won't let them out of principle.

After Brady no one is going to participate with the League office. If they sit for the interviews it's all going to be canned meaningless responses.

Bearmeat - this is Goodell trying to make it up with his buddy Kraft that he is not just going after Brady and the cheatalots. It's abuse of authority by Goodell. The NFLPA should file for an injunction against the interviews until after the SB. Al Jazeera doesn't even exist in the U.S. any longer. Ridiculous!!! Thanks, Since '61

C'mon! Mathews and Peppers can hire top legal counsel. There is no hard evidence against them. Sit down and say things like "No Mr. Commissioner, I don't recall anything like that.. No sir, I,would never, ever do anything to jeopardize the league and its reputation among the fans and viewers. I'm willing to take a blood test right now, if you like. By the way sir, the wife and I would love to have you and the missus over for a home-cooked meal and meet the kiddies"

I imagine that Ross wrote this article with points of emphasis in mind. Curious that he mentioned every OLB favorably except for McCray, who was not mentioned at all. True, I would like to see McCray play more - I have a better idea what the others can do.

Overall I thought Spriggs looked good. Playing him exclusively at LT in the opener. I would like to see what he does at RT though too. Also I am looking forward to seeing Murphy play RT. The backup RT play needed to be better. Murphy maybe able to help that.

I love our OLB/Elephant End position right now. We have a great mix of players. This I believe is the deepest the position has been under Capers, which is a great thing. Right now Fackrell is buried on the depth chart and he would likely be a starter or 2nd team player on most teams. The rotation is going to be really good this year, and Capers now has the ability to create a really nice mixture of players. Imagine being able to use the Psycho and NASCAR packages again.

Good observations. Geronimo has a chance to make 53 if he can remain productive the rest of the way. Burks was impressive too. The defense looks deep except for DE.

Don't know about the 53, but why not if he continues to play well! I was impressed with the blocking of the young/rookie wide receivers who contributed greatly to the extra rushing yards seen in the second half. I saw Davis, Abrederis, and Waters all blocking downfield extending plays. I very much want to see the field being stretched though, and really do not know if we will have improved in this regard, until Aaron plays. I LOVE the big receiver concept though.
