Tre Boston Is Still a Good Option for the Packers

The Packers should still pursue safety Tre Boston.

Free agent safety Tre Boston is still an option for the Packers to play alongside Adrian Amos. They both have different skill sets but overall can do a little bit of everything. The Packers haven’t had that kind of flexibility on the back end for quite some time. Amos is probably a better safety in run support while Boston possesses better ball skills to be a more reliable centerfield type. Tramon Williams is projected to play opposite of Amos next season, but it would be nice to have the 36-year-old veteran move back to his natural position at corner. Green Bay has somewhat of a void to fill there after losing Bashaud Breeland to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Depending on where you look, the Packers have somewhere around $13 to $15 million left in cap space which is more than enough to sign Boston and have still money left over. The 26-year-old has been a late signing to one-year contracts in each of the last two offseasons and judging by his current market, it’s likely to happen again.

After the Chicago Bears signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to a one-year $3.5 million dollar deal, it’s hard to imagine Boston commanding a larger payday than that. There’s no question this would be more than a reasonable price for an upgrade in the Packers secondary.

Boston wasn’t among the most highly regarded safeties entering 2019 free agency, but he don't be mistaken, he is still a starting-caliber player in this league. Over the last three seasons, he’s started 38 out of 45 games and recorded 10 interceptions. His three interceptions in 2018 would have tied Green Bay for the team-lead with Clinton-Dix who was traded in week eight.

Even though the Packers did well to receive a fourth rounder in exchange for Clinton-Dix, they still lost an element of playmaking in the second half of the season. Boston adds that and then some with his effectiveness as an open-field tackler.

The incoming draft class will cut off about four million of the cap mentioned earlier leaving more than enough room to add Boston and possibly a mid-season signing in case of an injury at a key position. Boston is easily one of the top remaining free agents and would be a nice addition to an already solid group of defensive backs. Boston, Amos, and a rookie taken in the first few rounds would have Green Bay’s safety position looking better than it has in years entering the 2019 season.

We don’t need another one year player at safety. If he isn’t with 2 I wiuldnt bother. Big gamble that any draft pick will be starter ready at safety in two years let alone one.

The conundrum with Boston is three teams in three years. His production seems fine, so is it a locker room issue or a behavioral issue or something else? IDK.

Losing Breeland creates some pressure to move Williams back to CB and that leaves Jones, Campbell and Greene vying for a starting position. Not an ideal group from which to select a starter. We need another safety, whether through the draft or Boston. The Packers need to do some homework on Boston's background/issues. If he checks out, I would prefer a veteran to a draftee. I agree with Coldworld that rookie safeties don't always flourish in the NFL.

To be fair I think we didn’t help him. Some players need a specific focus first, others can handle learning multiple positions. He looks to be of the former sort. Let him play ILB. He may grow from there (I have my doubts), but I think he needs stability in a single defined role. Under MM, everyone having to do everything often left some players unable to reach their potential at anything. Jones needs the game to slow and to become instinctive to unlock his athleticism.

I wouldn't have a problem with a one or two year affordable deal. That would allow the Packers to keep him and Amos together and see how Greene, Campbell, Jackson & Jones develop. It also takes care of a draft need and allows Gutekunst to address other positions.

Starting caliber players on the market at Boston's age seem to want 4-year deals. It seems like Boston has been willing to accept one-year deals with the aim of getting back onto the market and taking a shot at a multi-year (read: 3-5 year) deal the next year. The multi-year deal hasn't happened. He might have to be willing to accept that below-market 2-year deal for the security.

I agree, but I’d be concerned if we go in with only a rookie cover type in addition to Amos. We need some stability. Safety takes time to learn and having a rapport between the two (and we still need two cover guys on game day) is key to a successful safety position. Amos will start on one true safety formations.

I’d see Boston as a big step up as the second and as cover for Amos, allowing Greene as well as a draft pick to grow into their position, preferably this year and next.

Give him a a 4 year offer with an out after 2 if the price is good. Use incentives. Length of contract is often misleading in the NFL. I don’t want us to be looking at readiness to contribute now in the draft rather than upside. Settling that position will help stabilize the Hybrid ILB role, which I think will benefit Jones too.

I know this wont be a popular sentiment, but the Packers a bunch of picks in the upcoming draft that is deep in defensive talent. Before we go dipping our toes into free agency again, get through the draft and see what we get. There will be other guys cut loose after the draft if we have the need. Cap space is tight now, 13 million by all accounts with about five mill to sign the draftees. Getting younger is a priority. GO PACK!!

Glad you mentioned Raven Greene. In the epic interview by Andrew Herman with Tim Boyle that 99.9% of you missed, Herman asked Boyle who he felt could make a huge 2nd year jump. He didn't hesitate and said Raven Greene. It's one thing for a fan to give his opinion but it's entirely different when a qb who sees the guy in practice every day says it. Something to keep in mind. I think we need to curtail the massive over spending at this point and rely on guys like Boyle and Greene to make that epic 2nd year jump that many do. After all isn't Boyle and Greene Gutey's guys? If you trust in Gutey why are we looking in Boston and elsewhere?

I loved his aggressive in your face push push push that ball down the field style of play. Favre was also like that. I am also a pusher. Maybe it's why Boyle, Favre and I are all 9's. As for Kizer I do think he has tremendous potential but as a broadcaster not quarterback. He's very articulate like Marcedes Lewis.

I do agree Boyle is not Brett. He's bigger, faster, more mobile, arm strength similar or better and has the smarts like Aaron Rodgers. He does possess the aggressive style of a Favre at times but he has the ability to think faster and not repeat same mistakes over and over like Favre did throwing left moving right in the NFC Championship game as a Viking. He will be a better NFL passer than Favre because he's simply not as careless with the ball as Favre was. Nobody could be that bad in this day and get away with it like Favre did. The reason he was passed on had more to do with the three straight years of coaching turnover he had to deal with than his talent. It hurt him big time but since the talent was there the scouts couldn't help but notice him. I would like to know he was and thank who the scout was that told Gute to sign him. Incredible work. He'll make Gute look like a rock star in two years if they don't screw this up.

You can never have enough DBs. The Packers have lost a tremendous number of player games in the secondary over the last...well, pretty much every year in recent memory. If they can bring in a starting caliber FS at a number that's below the league average at the position and doesn't cause nasty ripples through the cap...why not? Some teams don't mind stockpiling talent. In this case, the Packers would only be at the stage of piling talent.

I say why not kick the tires on this guy, maybe 2 years, 6 million? Then get Thornhill in the 3rd Round, then a top notch, EDGE, OL, and TE in the first two rounds. That would position us to grab a dynamic slot in the middle rounds. Or, we could have Devin White fall to us and then we are a FS away from a vastly improved defense in terms of speed, smarts and athleticism, at least on paper.

Jaire is a 1, Jackson is 5. It was no secret coming into 2018 season that Jackson excelled via instinct whereas Jaire was much more polished as a technician. If Jackson is to make the jump to starter material, 2020 will be favorable as it's the year of the rat for which Jackson is. Should GB make the Super Bowl this year, he has the spotlight as the year of the rat begins just prior on Jan 25, 2020. As Forrest Gump said, "that's all I have to say about that."

I’m not going to guess at who we should draft, only state that we need to draft a cover safety type. We also need to not fool ourselves into thinking a draft pick is likely to thrive immediately. If we can get a cover competent FA such as Boston, it allows us to develop talent and stabilize roles and to draft for upside.

As to Boston himself, that comes down to management. Look at the oddballs Belicheck has brought in. Make the rules plain and if the benefits are outweighed by the negatives, cut bait having structures the contract accordingly. Let the vets around the player guide him. Great role for Williams? Boston hasn’t been kicked off teams.

We might have our choice of the top 7 Safeties in the draft at #44 as I do not see many going in the 1st Round. Adderley, Rapp, Thornhill, Gardner-Johnson, Hooker, Abram and Deionte Thompson may all be available at our 2nd Round pick at #44. I'd rather draft one, or two, of these guys than invest in Tre Boston. Of the seven, Thornhill was given a perfect 10 on the Packers' RAS scoring, if that has any bearing, at all.

Gronk's stats are on the left...my TE pick's stats next to Gronk's, a 1 Life Path and Taurus just like Gronk as well. Stud blocker already, coach up the receiving intangibles (hands / footwork / release / routes etc) and you've got your Pro Bowl TE for the next decade for only a 4th round pick and we currently have two of those. Walter Football has him ranked as the #16 TE...fine by me...who doesn't love a deep discount!?!?

Brady is also a snake in its enemy year--the pig...I HIGHLY doubt the Pats return to the Bowl this year.

If Gronk follows astrology / numerology, he no doubt considered this enemy year as a factor. It's nice to go out on top. What will be really compelling is if he only takes his enemy year off assuming Brady is still around in 2020.

"I am a Rat"

So you are a rat Johnblood? Wow, just wow! I'm a horse and my enemy according to Dragon and the Zodiac is The Rat!! Lare, who has made up two fake I.D's and mocked and harrassed me for months here is also a rat. Just these two guys alone knowing they are both rats makes me almost a believer in this stuff. I would like to know the animal signs of the following: Fastmoving, Archie, and Coldworld if you could please.

Thanks,

Dash

Rash, for the 20th time would you please leave me out of your imbecilic ramblings? I don’t have any fake ID’s, and I’m tired of your immature attacks. Really dude, grow up!

All I did was call you a rat which you never denied. Why is that an attack? I'm a horse and you are a rat. A rat is not a bad thing if you would have taken the time to read what Dragon is saying. Everyone has a number and animal issued to them based on their birthdate It simply means that we are natural enemies and explains a lot. That's all I was trying to establish and why the only people so far that appear to have issues with me or my opinions happen to be rats. If I could figure out who the rats are I could better know how to understand them and deal with them. I'm trying to solve a problem not create one Lare. I simply ask you kindly not to pay attention to what Dragon and I have to say ok? I don't want to fight with you.

Okay, for the 21st time would you please leave me out of your imbecilic ramblings. And please quit calling me names like "rat".

I'm just a Packers fan who has been a fan since the 50's. I like the content & articles on CHTV, but apparently I can't post here without being attacked and called names by you. Fine, I'll simply move on to forums that are moderated to keep out such crap.

Congratulations Dash, you're apparently the type of poster that Al wants here. I wish you both the best.

Lare, you do three things and there's no issues anymore. You started this not me. I don't like fighting anymore than you do.

1. Don't call me Rash. It's insulting and it's a personal attack against the rules here and you break it every chance you get. It's inciting and you do it on purpose.

2. Do not refer to me anymore as a "Viking Troll". Nobody loves the Packers and wants them to win more than I do. It's also inciting and you do it on purpose.

3. Get rid of your other I.D. Larry Pennell and quit following me around. It's inciting and you do it on purpose.

Given that we're on the Patriots, their owner Robert Kraft is also a snake in his enemy year, and I'd guess most of you are well aware of the prostitution sting he was just involved in.

Yes, but Robert Kraft is worth $6.2 billion. I doubt if he cares what you and silly numerology says about him.

Kraft is an 8 life path, the number of MONEY, POWER, and karma.
born June 5 1941 6+5+1+9+4+1 = 26 2+6 = 8

The one lifepath I'm concerned about is the quality of this site; which is on a downward life path.
Can the irrelevant stuff get edited out by CHTV, as its starting to detract from otherwise good football debate.
If we readers have to keep skipping over this nonsense, then CHTV may as well allow politics and other stuff be posted (which I'm not advocating).

I wanted to sign Boston a year ago. 89 PFF coverage grade in 2017 as a single high FS. Not a good tackler. His coverage grade in 2018 was a still-good 78.2. The longest pass he allowed all season was 22 yards. His tackling grade improved. His overall 2018 grade was 74.1.

Green Bay has Amos and Tramon as proven NFL caliber safeties. Since two is the minimum, and one of them is ancient, having a third proven NFL-caliber safety sounds like a great idea. I like Greene and Campbell, but there is no reason why they can't be #4 and #5. Josh Jones is a hybrid LB: what evidence there is suggests he can't play more than 8 yards off the LOS.

As for the 3 teams, IDC. Mercenaries are welcome in GB. $4M AAV or less is a no-brainer.

Sleeper TCU Edge
Ben Banogu did not score worse than the 80th percentile in any of the drills at the combine. In fact, his 4.62-second 40-yard dash (90th percentile) and 134-inch broad jump (99th) were among the best in this class for edge defenders. His 7.02-second three-cone drill (80th) wasn't too shabby, either.

I'm remembering a time when football was great... A time when the chill in the air was soon shattered by the sound of pads crunching and men groaning as the slam to the frozen tundra... with nothing but snot bubbles in their nose.

I'm remembering a time when school boys learned to count by 2's, 3's, 6's, and 7's in front of the TV on Monday night.

I remember when important numbers used to be measured in Sacks, TD's, rushing yards, INT's, and were marked in white from 10 to 50.

Now I come to what was once a very respected, fun, and informative blog on the Green Bay By-God Packers of the NFC, and I see that the important numbers have changed into New Age mumbo jumbo... numeric life paths determining talent rather than skill, athleticism, and hard work.

St. Vincent is rolling over in his grave.

And just like the Packers front office, complacency has set in on this website and locker room cancers are apparently tolerated.

Who runs this place? Mike McCarthy?

Earl Thomas and the Ravens agreed to terms on a four-year, $55 million deal. According to ESPN.com, the safety's deal includes $32 million in guaranteed money at signing with $22 million of that being paid out over the first nine months of the contract.

Boston is still an upgrade over Tramon at Safety. Why would you not want to better your team? You can essentially swap the salaries maybe even get a little money in the bank. Who cares if it’s just a one year deal? Tramon can’t have more than one year left anyway.

Tramon is cover throughout the secondary and in his last year. Remove him and you need additional cover at both safety and cornerback over and above the current need. Boston would be a good complement to what we have and enable us to groom for the future in my view rather than an “instead of” proposition.

@JakeDickerson- GB just paid Tramon a $1M roster bonus on 3-15-19. Tramon stays & off the books next year.

It’s a fair question too. That said, the amount of upside determines the scales of any downside worth accepting. I think the Packers are in a position where that evaluation leans heavily in the direction of worth it at this point, based purely on prior play and the current roster.
