Top 10 Best Things About The Packers 2023 Schedule

The Packers 2023 schedule is out and there's a lot to like! Here are the 10 best things about it.

The Packers have a new, younger team and their new schedule is about the best they could hope for.

We already knew that they would have what looks like a relatively easy schedule, since they have the 9th weakest strength of schedule (based on 2022 win percentage). But the layout is pretty nice, too.

Here are the 10 best parts:

10. Ease Into It
The Packers start the season against the Bears, who had the worst record in the league last year. They don't play a team with a 2022 winning record until Week 4. They don't play a playoff team until Week 8.

9. Few Miles
The Packers will travel the 2nd fewest miles of any team in the league. Being towards the middle of country helps, but their opponents are, on the whole, pretty close.

8. Good Bye
The Packers have an early bye in Week 6, but that isn't a terrible thing in this case. It breaks up road trips to Las Vegas and Denver, so the team doesn't have to go west on consecutive weeks, and they can visit the Broncos early to acclimate to the mountain air, if they like. The best part is the team gets to play 5 non-playoff teams and then have a break to reassess their new offense and self-scout for early tendencies. While it's great to rest late for a playoff push, a young team establishing a new identity could use an early break like this to help find themselves.

7. No Jet Lag
The Packers don't have to go to the west coast at all. Those have been rough on them in the past, but this year, the Chargers and Rams both come to Green Bay.

6. Split Road
The Packers have no more than two consecutive road games this year. Last year, the Packers had a brutal 3 game road trip (where they went 0-3), which was preceded by a "home" game in London two weeks earlier. The year before, they had a stretch of 4 of 5 on the road. Those are brutal stretches and the Packers don't have anything like that on this year's schedule. They only have back-to-back road games twice, and both times, one of the opponents are a division rival, limiting travel distance.

5. Florida Favor
The Packers only have one Florida team on the schedule this year (Tampa), and they have to come to Green Bay in December. No sweltering Florida games in green jerseys this year.

4. Avoid the Heat
Not only do the Packers avoid Florida, they don't have any games that look like they will be very hot. Their road games in September are in Chicago and in the Atlanta dome.

3. Prime Time Travel
The Packers have to travel for Thursday and Monday games, but they at least have home games the week before.

2. Chief Preparation
The Chiefs are the toughest team on the schedule and, not only will the Packers host them instead of playing at Arrowhead, they will also get extra time to prepare, since they play on THursday the week before. The Chiefs, meanwhile, will be coming off a Sunday road game (Raiders) after a Monday night game against the Eagles. It's pretty much the best the Packers could hope for in terms of timing.

1. Out Like A Lamb
The Packers finish their season at home against the Bears - the reigning worst team in the NFL. This gives Jordan Love and the new-look Packers a chance to end the season with an exclamation point, no matter how the first 16 games go.

NO 3 game road game stretch this year or anything like it...This was the first thing I looked for since the NFL schedulers always seem to screw the Packers that way.

I'm not thrilled with a week 6 bye, but Bruce brought up an excellent point why it's not a bad thing this year either.

Side note...The Jets first game in on Monday Night Football AT home against Buffalo... Hmmm... Rodgers best get to as many OTAs, Mini Camps, TC, or any other possible times to get with his new teammates because that's a pretty damn good defense.

By mid season, strength of schedule projections often look sadly dated. Whether it helps a young team to start with away games is a good question. Apart from that, what matters is what we are offensively and defensively by the time the season starts. Win or lose in Chicago, my first question will be how well prepared do we look?

"By mid season, strength of schedule projections often look sadly dated. "

You're right, but I'd expand it so say any SOS projection based on the previous season is specious at best.

"Win or lose in Chicago, my first question will be how well prepared do we look?"

I think there will be a lot of pressure to get off to a fast start against an early slate of 2022 non-playoff teams. This is mostly a developmental season (as you imply) so playing from a position of confidence will be a tremendous help.

I like opening and closing with a division rival. I can’t get excited one way or the other with the “strength of schedule” since nobody knows how these teams improve or fall apart from year to the next. Look at the Rams last year as evidence of that.
Just glad they didn’t get stuck with a bunch of away games in a row.

Yep...the trip from worst to first, and vice versa in the NFL is often a short trip. The salary cap, draft order, compensatory picks and scheduling based on Division previous year records make it difficult to stay on top.

It is difficult to stay consistently competitive. Coaching and team management must be highly competent.

Looked into tickets for the Raiders game. Live an hour and a half North of Vegas and been waiting for our guys to come to town.

Can I still get a #17 Adams jersey to wear somewhere (haven't looked yet)? Shows I'm backing the Packers and gives appreciation for what he did when he played for us.

Use the extra coin to bring a fellow packer-Backer to the game and wear an old jersey of any Packer from the past!

After looking at the prices of even the CHEAP seats, I don't have too much money to spend. That's not even counting lodging, since it's a night game and I'd probably not want to drive home so late. It would be a gamble, and we know how they build casinos in Vegas and it's not by giving money away.

Unless it's a Packer game I usually fall asleep after half time. Start work before 5:00 AM Mountain time.

Hey Steve...I'M there too!!!! I was just telling a few guys in the office I'll be going. I'll drive there Monday morning, have a nice prime rib dinner, go to the game, and then possibly even make the 3 hour drive back to LA that night though I'll probably stay the night.

Agree, a lot to like about the schedule. Pretty ideal for Jordan’s first year under center.

That said, not to nitpick, but point 7 doesn’t hold water. Las Vegas may not be physically on the coast, but it’s still a West Coast road game. Pacific time zone, and the flight is only 30mins shorter than all the way to LA. Anyone who doesn’t think jet lag is a factor in visiting Vegas should steer clear of the craps table.

That Vegas game is also a Monday night game, which doesn’t help as it will feel 2 hours later than it is. Hopefully they make the trip out there early to allow their bodies to adjust - and keep the guys off the Strip!

AR will win another MVP...That's what matters to him. They will make the playoffs. I don't think they go to the show unless their GM picks up another very good WR/ exceptional RB at the trade deadline. They are all in, so the GM may just do it. I don't have super bad feelings either way...GB never got a #2 WR to go with DA...and that is a major stumbling block in us never getting over the hump. Our run game always got shut down in the playoffs and we never had the WR horses to make them pay thru the air and most of our TE's were blocking instead of catching. Now Love has a plethora of young weapons..but not the veteran savvy to go with it. Expectations are moderate...but I think Love will do well. Next season I really think we could be a Super Bowl threat as we will have some CAP room for window dressing and our younger guys will be improved. It looks like our DL personnel are going to be pushing the pocket on 3rd down by all the personnel Gute drafted....That's a good thing. I'm really looking forward to the KC game as they blitzed Love unmercifully last time and A.Reid did not know who Jordan Love was this offseason. I hope JL shows KC who he is with a passing clinic on the Chiefs so their Coach can remember his name....GPG...Go.... Love

LOL...Maybe...AR had no #1 WR and a bunch of hurt OL coming back and loss of RT to FA. Then a broken bone in his hand. He also didn't do what was right and come in early for the rooks/team to get things going after a windfall salary bump. I think we're all bittersweet about how things should have been and what they were. I'm happy it's all over and look forward to my NEW QB who has been thru a lot of stuff already in his young life and am 100% behind him. He looked good versus a SB contender and I'm sure Gute has done enough to START his career off right...and things will only start getting better in the next few years as these young talents begin to trend upward. I project Watson as #1 WR and both Doubs and Reed as #2 WR's potential. I think all 3-start this season. The other WR's maybe someone surprises and moves up also. Both TE's should play by necessity. Really looking forward to the DL pieces rotating up for pass rush. We need AR for 1 more thing...A 1st RD pick in 2024...GPG

They only travel for a Thursday game on Thanksgiving in Week 12 which again is against the Lions. Thanks, Since '61

You made some good points, Bruce. Just one correction on #7: they also have a game against the Rams, but as with the Chargers, the Rams come to Green Bay. Perhaps your mind was on the Rams past home of St. Louis?

Another thing is, unlike last year when Packers' opponents had something crazy like a 13-day collective rest advantage over the Packers, I think the Packers have a 1-day advantage over their opponents. For instance, playing on Thursday night and having your next opponent play 3 days later on Sunday, you'd have a 3-day rest advantage going into your next game.

Football players could take a lesson from hockey players.

Hockey is a very physical game, coupled with extreme cardio demand. They play every two or three days. They travel all over the continent.

In context football players have absolutely NO excuse for any fatigue nonsense.

Man up and play the games to the absolute best of your abilities. The pay is extraordinary,, give a commensurate effort and there are NO excuses for less.

If only coaches would realize this and stop coddling these overpaid spoiled children and there would be more competitive games with more entertainment where the true competitors make the difference between winning and losing.

Let the games begin!

Yeah, but hockey players only get two types of injuries; upper body and lower body. In Foot-Baw ya gots yer hammies and yer planter fash-ee-eye-tus and yer various tendons, yer turf toe and what not. Put hockey players on turf without breezers and we'll see just how tough they are.

I dont see football players spittin chicklets and keepin on playin.

I dont see football players going to the sidelines, getting multiple stiches and jumping back out there to play.

Hockey players are not as big as football players as a whole, but there is absolutely no doubt that hockey players are much, much tougher than football players overall.

Take the linemen out of the equation (there are simply NO 300 pounders in hockey) and I would take the hockey players over the football players anytime!

The flow of the schedule is very favorable. By flow I mean they have no more then 2 road games in a row. They don't have long distance between road games. The toughest game on the schedule they play at home after a mini bye. Both of their Thursday night games they have home games prior. From a travel standpoint, they have a very good schedule. This isn't last year when they were in 5 different cities in 5 weeks kind of thing.

Other takeaways from it.
They do have 2 Thursday games this year. Both against Detroit. First one is home 2nd one is at Detroit on thanksgiving day.
They do have 2 Monday night games this year.
They have 8 noon start games.
6 primetime games. (I count thanksgiving day a primetime game.) But 2 of the Sunday night games are in December.

Something that the schedule tells me is that they weren't exactly sure how well GB will be. They currently have 8 noon games. When is the last time we had close to that many? They have 2 Sunday night primetime games. But both are in December which could be flexed out.
They didn't put them in any Sunday night games before because they want to make sure they will be good first.

One last interesting thing is they play the Bears in the first game and the last game of the year. Something that will be fun to see how each team changes from week 1 to week 18.

I complain, all the time, about the NFL schedulers scheduling the Packers games at the same time the vikings games are to be aired. That usually means Packers fans, in western Wisconsin and in Minnesota, will not get to see the Packers' game because the vikings are on at the same time. There are 3, maybe 4, games on this schedule that won't be aired, in western Wisconsin. Weeks 9, 10,16 all have conflicts due to the vikings games being on at the same time. It doesn't matter that week 10's Packer game is on CBS at Noon and the vikings play on FOX at Noon. That Packer game will not be aired. Fix this! YTTV's Sunday Ticket may not even help--especially if YTTV claims local market games take precedence over other games. Week 18 gametimes have yet to be determined, so those games' availability are also in question. Flexing of MNF games, late in the season, are also a possibility. We are just cogs in a machine. A Packers' game, that will not be aired, in western Wisconsin and in Minnesota is the game on Christmas Eve, at Noon. Someone scheduled the vikings to also play on Christmas Eve, at Noon.

Over here in MI, we've been fortunate over the years to have the Lions and Packers NOT scheduled in the same time slot very often. So unless the local broadcast rules limit the number of games on a given Sunday, we often get to see the Packers.

You can watch the game on the game pass paid per game, or you can purchase only Packers game per year or complete game package (all games) per year. The last 2 option gives you to watch up to 3 or 4 previous years games. You would be fraction of second late than what originaly happened, but still be able to watch. That is how I watch all Packers game. 2 years ago they cut the coaches tape option, and that was unfortunate because there is no way I can watch later that feature.

It is not cheap, but that is my only option.

Sometimes I take things too seriously, but it really bothers me to have people living in the state of Wisconsin not being able to watch the Packers because of being preempted by the vile Vikings (or for that matter, any other team).
I realize there are more important things in life, but at the same time this is indeed an outrage, or at least a significant unfairness.
***
Living in Georgia, I expect the Packers to be overruled by the Falcons, even though I don't like it.
During my years in New Mexico, it bothered me much more to see the Packers take a backseat to the detestable Cowboys, a team from out of state, even somewhat of a rival state.
Over the decades, I like to think that I'm getting better at abiding -- although not accepting -- the stupidities and even absurdities of life, even when they are also really unfair.
***
In any case, I genuinely feel for you, mrtundra.
It seems something that could be, and should be, remedied.
Even when we can't change things in this world, at least not immediately, it seems to me good to protest things, at least inwardly, so that we stand firm in what we believe instead of being manipulated and intimidated into faddish ideologies and shallow policies.
Again, I realize football is relatively less important; but, then again, even the little things do matter in life, as long as we keep them in perspective.

The NFL remains in the dark ages regarding media. I took a look at the NFL's page on how to watch and there are 15 packages, none of which shows all games.

Meanwhile, via the internet one can watch every game at any time, or so I am told. I know nothing about this, but being able to watch every game; condensed games; all 22, pre-season, regular season and playoffs; for the past few seasons; at any time; live and replay; and on any device are things I would pay a reasonable price to have. I imagine a lot of people do this... so I'm told.

I am sure the NFL is maximing its revenue each year with this awkward mix, and I hope they are prepared to modernize as cable continues its slow death, but in the meantime they are making it hard on good customers.

An interesting angle to the arduous schedule of pro football (and other sports) is how there seems to be a movement to place greater emphasis on the reserves getting quality snaps.
I like the idea of getting extra guys active to keep the starters fresher, as well as freer from injury.
The challenge is to keep the starters involved enough in a game so that they can develop a rhythm, while at the same time getting them enough rest so that they can be at their best.
***
With the Brewers, Craig Counsell seems to do a good job of getting the bench involved in ways that help to keep the whole team involved and contributing.
As far as the Bucks and their early exit in the playoffs, I wonder if they went too much to their starters in the postseason versus the practice in the regular season, resulting in waning energy and diminished results in the fourth quarter.
In football, it seems there's a trend toward more subbing for rest and health, plus situational matchups.
***
One consideration to all of this is that due to human nature and the nature of competition, games tend to be close at the end. Down the stretch, it may be a big advantage to the team with the freshest starters.
As far as wanting athletes to be tough in their endurance and perseverance, that's a good thing; but it seems the reality is that even the most determined players are going to wear out and break down if not utilized properly.
Also, it seems injuries -- large and small -- are frustratingly frequent, and the bench has to be ready to step in eventually for at least short stints. Why not make sure they are more ready when the time comes?
In pro sports these days, it seems the seasons are too long and grinding. It can be debated that even the games are too long and grueling.
It'll be interesting to me to see how it goes as far as teams building rosters in this era of sports. Will there be less emphasis on high-priced players in order to build more of a depth of talent?
Will there be more opportunities for teams of lesser talent to outsmart opponents by strategic subbing?

Some interesting and profound thoughts Swisch. My quick reply is that the sports market has become too saturated with games. All major professional league seasons are too long - making a portion of the games uninteresting and dull. Of course none of the owners will scale back their games - because the more games - the more $ for them. However like the beer sold in their arenas and stadiums - teams have been diluted for various schedule-related reasons. That being so, I think it's only time when the NFL will attempt to add an 18th game to the regular season schedule.

"making a portion of the games uninteresting and dull"

There are two groups who do not find them dull: serious fans for whom every minute of a game is meaningful and the league who sees not a football game but entertainment.

While I sometimes turn the volume down, the league's talking heads go on about players' private lives, tweets, and dramas. Music, quick edits, snippets of a play presented as a 'highlight', and other short attention span stuff to keep it all moving, fast paced, exciting!

Show biz "held over by popular demand for a boffo 18th week!"

I long sometimes for the play by play of old: "Starr to pass... Dowler... first down."

I wonder if Major League Baseball games should be reduced to seven innings, with the regular season ending at the beginning of September, and the World Series decided by October.
For the NBA, 40 minutes per game may be plenty, with 60 games for the regular season.
As far as the NFL, the length of a game as it is now may be just about right at an hour, but 16 games for the regular season seems like the outer limit as far as player safety (although in this case I like it as a fan).
These are worthwhile discussions as far as the effect on players, fans, and owners -- even if change seems unlikely.
More probable is teams adapting one way or another to make the best of the situation, including the possibility of playing more of the roster during games and throughout the season.
We're already seeing signs that it may be innovative, if not necessary, for the Packers to have three or four working running backs per season (perhaps even for some games), five or so wide receivers, as many as six interior linemen, etc.

Home games against Division opponents are the most important games to win. We lost one last year, and it cost us the playoffs.

Home games against NFC opponents are next.

Home games against AFC opponents.

Road games against Division opponents.

Road games against NFC opponents

Road games against AFC opponents

6-2 at home, and 4-5 on the road, gets us to 10 wins and probably the playoffs.

The two least important games on the schedule are at Pittsburgh and at Denver.

It doesn't matter how they make out the schedule. We're going back to the 70s and 80s like it or not,It's going to be very difficult for me to watch the packers play, I'm just dreading the thoughts of going through that hell again for another decade. Damn !! We had 2 back to back hof qbs for 30 years!! And only 2 sbs to show ? How, why? Just think how many mahomes will win,he's already been to 2 sbws,he could possibly tie brady. Kc has Reid, excellent gm front office. The opposite of with arod in his prime, what a shame!

My first impression was that this schedule was net favorable. There is no such thing as a perfect schedule for any team, but this one seems kinder than most. The most important portion of this schedule to me is the start - when the team has a couple games to gain their form and confidence by going against easier teams. I did not want to see this young team getting gob-smacked in the first game - by being scheduled against an older and tough team.

you have to take what the schedule gives you, no looking ahead, one week at a time is the ticket and evaluate at the halfway point.

3. Thursday Travel
The Packers have to travel for both of their Thursday games, but they at least have home games the week before.

Not correct Bruce. The first Thursday night game is at Lambeau against the Lions. Sunday we are at home for the Saints while the Lions are at the Bears, so a small advantage for the Packers.

What a mess of a schedule. This is why my sister gave up her access to season tickets a few years ago and has not regretted it. Five night games (two in Green Bay) and a Thanksgiving game. Plus there could be schedule flexing. As a TV viewer, I like the 3:25 PM kickoffs best, but there are only two of those! The early Thanksgiving game means that I have to negotiate with my (non-Packer fan) in-laws to have Thanksgiving dinner moved to a later time than usual. I don't like to put football before family, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I like the 3:30 games as well. As for the Thanksgiving Day game, it is such a bitch that I have to start drinking beer at 11AM but you know, it is a holiday and have to get into the right mood for that early game

The Giants tilt is a Monday night game in December. If i take the train i’ll be getting back to Brooklyn at 2am. Nah, not doing that. Hopefully they flex that one to Sunday.
