To Be or Hock to Be?

Is Hockenson worth the 12th overall pick?

Outside of maybe cornerback, the tight end position has been the most problematic for the Packers over the last few years. Ever since Jermichael Finley’s career-ending neck injury in 2013, tight end has been a revolving door of inconsistency. Thankfully, this year’s draft class appears to be the perfect time to pick up one if not two promising tight end prospects from a deep pool. For most scouts, their boards start with Iowa’s TJ Hockenson whose name manufactures mixed feelings when mentioned in the same breathe as Green Bay’s 12thoverall pick.

Pop in Hockenson’s film and you will see a guy that can contribute to an NFL offense in a variety of ways. He can line up all over the place, blocking in-line as well as most offensive linemen, and showcasing smooth route discipline as a receiver from the slot. Hockenson is arguably the most complete player in the 2019 class but because he doesn’t play a premium position, he gets a little push back, however, talent is still talent.

Skeptics love to bring up recent history like how in the past, teams have done pretty well waiting to select a tight end. Travis Kelce was a third rounder in 2013, Zach Ertz a second rounder the same year, and fellow former Hawkeye George Kittle waited until the fifth round to hear his name called two years ago. Recent drafts are fun for comparison sakes but they are in no way guidelines. A lot can change year to year.

Last year, only one tight end went in the first and that was South Carolina’s Hayden Hurst. Nothing against Hurst who can still have a productive NFL career, but he’s a far inferior athlete to Hockenson and nowhere near the same blocker. Let it be known, Hockenson would have easily been the best tight end prospect for the past five drafts and for that he’s worth the 12thoverall pick.

Of course, everything will depend on how the board falls for the Packers on Thursday. Say Ed Oliver or a top-rated offensive lineman falls they may have a higher grade on Green Bay’s draft board and thus are worthy of their first selection. However, if they have similar grades on a few guys, Hockenson included, let’s hope they pull the trigger and improve on a position that desperately needs more attention. Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis are still solid in their own rights but neither are long term solutions as they near retirement.

If you need more convincing than how poorly tight play has been the last two years, look no further than 2016 for what Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense looks like with a decent tight end that can still run. Jared Cook helped get that team to another level down stretch and also reach the NFC Championship game with his miraculous 36-yard pass against the Dallas Cowboys.

Green Bay needs to stop the madness that has been going on at tight end and find a guy that can possibly service them not just in the short term. Hockenson has all the tools to be an effective NFL player for the next decade and should be in consideration for Green Bay’s pick at 12.

Exactly, and if we don't... The guy they really need to get to compete ad ultimately crush the NFL ?? Kahale Warring! He's in GB today for a draft visit, this guy is going to be a great prospect, hope they get it done. My sense is a Denver, might snag him right before we pick.

Any TE we might want to draft, GB needs to be painfully aware that Denver is drafting just in front of them, and Denver is definitely taking a TE or 2 in this draft.

Man would I love to Warring in GB... FREAKISH ATHLETE!

Cap hit to cut Graham was high. Either pay him millions to play, or millions not to play. If there's a pass rusher or OT available that they have graded as high or higher than Hock, I'd take him, but I'd be very happy with Hockenson at #12 too. He would add so much to both the run and passing game and is a very high effort, high character guy.

You are correct - he was overpaid and for too long. Hope shot by TT. But maybe a bit misused and maybe a bit of injury issue. So they kept him for Cap considerations and the fact that he can still score in the red zone and he cannot be as bad this year as last. Think that he has lost a step or 2 to be the type of TE that we need but I like Tonyan to block and get some of those critical first down ( he displayed a little of that as well as Special Teams) I also think that we need to draft a tight end but dont know if we will get one and dont think that we should waste a high pick on one unless that guy is a no lose type like Witten, Kelce etc and how many of those guys come along. Rather pick a slot reciever with that pick but dont think that receiver should be picked with 12 when there are other holes to fill if not for now for later ie LB, OL , corner - whomever is best at the 12 spot.

Graham caught 600 plus yards last season with injuries. We had a healthy Richard Rodgers and he never broke the 600 mark. Graham can get 600+ again...granted it’s expensive. Could someone guarantee Hock blocking nfl level and getting 600+ yards THIS year? My guess on that would be a no. Is Graham the 800-1000 yard Graham of the past, probably not....but I see at least 600 yards and a few more TDs. And if they do it sparingly Lewis can actually catch and run and when he does it takes 3 to get him on the ground just look at all the tape of his catches.he is the best blocking tight end in the NFL period. Tonyan....I’m stoked about that guy...we know he can catch. I say no to a #12 pick on Hock And get a DL, OL , ILB ,RB, WR.

I haven't seen a single issue with Hockenson. None, that being said if you have a World beater for a TE....what exactly will that mean to your offense? In ML's offense will it be critical " have to have" position? I really think it will. So his talent will be rated on the same level as the other prospects Green Bay may take. So the conundrum is if a slight drop off exist at that position but a large one at OT or ILB then you might see them pass on TE and grab like rated player in a position of need and scarcity.

I will be really disappointed if packers don't try to get a pass rusher/DL/OL at #12, especially given the history of TEs drafted in first round.

If a QB has all day to throw due to lack of pass rush, or if an OL is a turnstile, it's going to make winning games a lot harder.

If Gute sees Hock as the long-term answer at TE then I'm all for drafting him at #12 assuming he is BPA at that point. The resigning of Graham should have no impact on whether we draft a TE high in this draft. In any case, Graham is a short-term solution and the purpose of the draft is to look long-term.

TJ Hockenson would be a terrific pick at twelve for a number of reasons:
1) Graham is here only one year . He has slowed down considerably and no longer is the red zone threat he had been in the past.
2) Lewis is a great locker room presence and can provide some blocking but he is also over the hill and sliding down.
3) TJ is like having another lineman to block for Arod.
4) His presence is a 3 down player which could be providing run or pass catching support.
5) He only has had 2 drops in his college career. GREAT hands.
6) He is a superb athlete who is fast enough to go up the middle or across the middle.
7) He will only get better with more time and coaching.
8) He is a plug and play player who could solidify the position for 10 years.
9) How more difficult the Packers were to defense when Cook was their TE. Same could be said for TJ.
10) We could actually have two TE sets with TJ and Graham.
11) a real difference maker on an offense which needs a jumpstart.
12) His presence will make our WR's more productive.
I hope Gutey takes him if he is still there.

I agree with almost all of your points but hock is not a super athlete. Hock is not a comp to cook. Fant is the comp to cook. The issue is are u willing to give up the extra athleticism that fant gives you for the superior blocking hockenson gives you? Given MLs comments about running the ball, I’d guess hockenson is higher on packers board. The comp I hear for hock is Heath MIller. Although they say hockenson grades a little better

SpurgeonCigar had a great post but missed the point you pointed out Titletown. Hock while a very good try hard player (blocker), and in certain schemes he would be a great player/receiver. However, Hock is not anything similar to Jared Cook or Noah Fant athletically and talent wise. Cook ran a 4.49 at his combine and Fant 4.5. They both are awesomely athletic. Hock ran somewhere between 4.7 and 4.74. Hock will never be a mismatch speed wise with either a Safety or Linebacker. Fant and Cook's game and athletism are off the chart and create significant mismatches all the time because who do you put on them? Most Safety's and LB's are too slow and cannot keep up with them and then being 6'5" and 250 lbs.

BTW, Fant's game helped Hock tremendously last year far more than the other way around. This is totally subjective but if I had to guess Rodgers would take Fant over Hock. Cook really elevated the Pack's offense and the Packers have been trying ever since to find a TE to duplicate what Cook did. For those who think a slower TE will be able to do what Cook did you are very wrong.

If I had to guess with how Rodgers likes going down field and opening the field up he wants Fant over Hock. Now the question is with Lewis resigned does LF feel they need a better blocker, or a TE who can create mismatches and match up better with Rodgers abilities?

As I have stated unwaveringly over and over if one of these 2 TE's are selected and both are available I believe the Packers will go with Fant for everything mentioned. I also believe there isnt another player in the draft that would have more of an immediate impact on the Packers success in 2019 than Fant (arguably other than a talented Safety or ILB) if used correctly. In a few days we all will find out who they select if either of these TE's.

My money is Fant over Hock too. Is Fant worth #12 pick? Again it boils down to who the options are at 12. Is Fant better than Oliver, Devin White, Devin Bush, Jawaan Taylor, or Montez Sweat, NO. If a group of the following guys, Brian Burns, Hockenson, Andre Dillard, & Rashan Gary, are still there, trade down a little!

I will too, the guy had 600+ yards while he was injured. All the redzone passes went to Adams. They kept going to Graham when he was covered just to sell it and open up other things. This is why I’m advocating another WR somewhere....because then the field is spread and other teams will have to make choices on who to double up on.

While we cannot know for sure what type of offense the Packers will run this year, it appears likely that TE's will feature much more prominently than they have under MM's tenure. More 12 and 22 personnel looks means that GB needs to have 4 or 5 productive TE's on the roster (including practice squad). The need for a slot is reduced. GB needs to add one of the top 3 rated TE's in this draft in either the first or second round and then double-down with a mid-round developmental prospect. I think that Gutey will need to trade up from 30 to grab his TE, somewhere in the 22 - 25 range, and it will likely be Fant or Smith. I don't relish the capital it will require to trade up, for MLF's offense to reach its potential, I think it's necessary.

From all the mock drafts I have read which I know don't mean as anything, there are 4 teams who might take Hockenson.

1. Jaguars - If I was picking this high I probably would not take Hockenson
2. Buffalo - They need everyone
3. Denver - Needs a QB. Flacco really?
4. Cincinnati - They need everyone

So, it's a slight possibility he falls to #12.

To me #12 is a bit too early to select a TE. I would rather take an OL or a DL in that spot especially since we’ve used cap space at our Edge and Safety positions.

At #30 I would jump all over Hock but at #12 I need to see which players we have to choose from before I select a TE. But who knows, Gute just might go for it or trade down a few spots and take him between 15 & 20 if that is where he trades back to.

All speculation at this point. Thanks, Since ‘61

I'm still of the opinion that #12 is a little too high for a TE, but if Gutekunst and LaFleur think that is what is needed for this offense to work I don't have a problem with Hockenson.

With this group of front seven guys maybe Gutekunst trades up into the first for another pick. Three ones to play with on five year options?

Oliver is better. Burns is better. I take TJ over the ILB’s or OL we’re likely to see available, based on value, but 12 is so high for a TE. That doesn’t seem advisable with our holes and our lack of quality depth to go along with a precarious cap situation next year.

I fear it may happen unless there is a QB run. Of course, there are idiot picks bound to happen, like Detroit trying to conjure their inner Belichik and the Bengals undoubtedly doing something stupid along with Elway. Who knows who tries to move up to 12 or above for a QB? We could be in the catbird seat if Lock is still there at 12.

If they want OL they trade out. It is too high for the ILB there, too. If Oliver and Burns are gone, they ought to trade down. There are a half-dozen really nice OL prospects likely to go (value-wise) 15-50 (Bradbury, Risner, Lindstrom, Williams, Ford, Dillard) and the same at Safety (Savage, Thornhill, Adderley, Gardner-Johnson, Hooker(rising), Rapp).

The real value is in picking up another top-50 pick because this draft is crazy with 2nd round grades IF Burns and Oliver are off the board at 12. I’d even move down a half-dozen spots with Oliver on the board for an extra third. We’d have all the ammo in the world to get back into the second with our 3rd’s and 4th’s. There will be a ton of guys who could play immediately for us in the late first or second at critical positions on the OL and secondary.

With the skills Hockenson would bring to the table for the Packers he would be a great pick at #12. Hockenson is a pretty good blocking TE as well. So he is worthy of a #12 pick. But so are other players that could step in and fill a need. Hockenson may not even make it to the #12 selection, but if he does the Packers should consider taking him at #12. I doubt Graham will be in Green Bay more than one more year. With a good receiving TE the need for a slot receiver is not as crucial. I guess we will see in a few days just what the Packers have in mind.

I love Hockenson and if you asked me 2 weeks ago I would have said take him at #12 and don't look back. He DOES have excellent hands and if you have any doubts about his blocking just pop in his game tapes. He doesn't just block to open a hole, he blocks his man to the whistle sometimes 10 yards downfield.

If Oliver is there and the Packers drafted him I'd be just about as happy. Like TE DT will be a position of need next season and he's one of the best.

If Dillard, Taylor, or Williams is there I'd be happy with either of them. I'm in agreement the Packers MUST protect Rodgers. He IS the QB for the GB Packers for the next 4 or 5 years, and is STILL the #1 reason why the Packers could win a SB even this year or next. Thompson was lucky with some 4th and 5th round picks and was able to build a hell of an O-Line for the first part of Rodgers career. The problem was when it cane to depth, most it was provided by UDFA.

If Gutes board says Hock then great. If it's Oliver, or an O-Lineman or even an Edge player great. Brian Gutekunst has done a damn good job so far considering the roster he took over IMO. In Gute I REALLY trust.

When Sitton and Lang were Not replaced with quality players all hell broke loose and we're lucky Rodgers didn't end up like Smith. I don't know if Oliver has the length to play a five tech in the 3-4. He rolls at around 280#s and most DTs run in the 300 pound range. Gutekunst may be scheming a trade down.

I agree with the post from Lare about control the line of scrimmage, but I am really partial at 12 with the emphasis being on defense.

If the aforementioned doesnt work out I am very intrigued at moving back to around 16 to draft Fant, or Hock (and pick up an extra 3rd round selection) if defensive players the Pack wanted at 12 was not there. My preference is well known for Fant over Hock at TE. Fant would eliminate need for a slot WR or other WR's allowing team to draft several OL and RB's to bolster depth.

At 30 give me BPA at OT, S, LB. With the #44 draft choice, and the extra 3rd round pick for dropping from 12 to 16 in round 1 move up and select Jeffrey Simmons. If Packers are afraid Simmons will go higher than trade 30th and the extra 3rd rounder to go up and aggressively select Simmons allowing Pack keep 44 for BPA at S, OL, or ILB.

Feel strongly Pack should select two OL anywhere starting in round 2 thru 5th round and with the OL already on team they will be in good shape.

At least at the 12 pick we won't be having to go into hock expending draft capital to get him. He's like getting a twofer anyway, addressing 2 areas of need with one guy, so what the heck get Hock.

Big Hock won't be available anyway at #7.

1 Arizona -QB KYLER MURRAY
2 49ers -DE NICK BOSA
3 Jets -Edge JOSH ALLEN
4 Raiders -DT QUINNEN WILLIAMS
5 Bucs -ILB DEVIN WHITE
6 Giants -DT ED OLIVER
7 Jags -TE TJ HOCKENSON
8 Lions -OL JONAH WILLIAMS
9 Bills -OT JAWAAN TAYLOR
10 Broncos -CB GREEDY WILLIAMS
11 Bengals -ILB DEVIN BUSH

12 PACKERS - WHO would you take in this scenario where the marquis guys we want are gone?

I project neither of those project QBs Drew Lock or Dwayne Haskins goes. The Broncos believe Flacco can win for them and the Giants believe in Eli still.... his last half of the year last year was much better than the first half. He is the same draft class as Rivers & Big Ben, and they're not being rushed out.... I hate Eli, but I am betting they pick a player not the "next" QB.

In your scenario I would think the Packers select Wilkins, Fant, Sweat or Dillard at #12 depending on what they feel is their biggest need and who they feel will be available at later picks.

I SEE 7- 11 this way: THE LIONS WILL TAKE SWEAT FIRST. BILLS - Taylor Ot Broncos -Trade with Atlanta- Wilkins DT Bengals - Bush. // Leaving the packers to make a stupid move to take Hock. He will be chewy. Not the big play guy you think. Yes I'm Skeptical. He's a reach. Hock will Drop. Bank on it!! He's going to get slower. The biggest mistake in any rebuild is taking a TE. If Gute takes Hock it will be his biggest mistake as a GM. My hope is if Denver trades out// they take LOCK! Screw Denver. Otherwise Burns must be the pick.

From NFL.com full 7-round mock:

» Round 1, No. 12 overall: Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
» Round 1, No. 30 (from Saints): Noah Fant, TE, Iowa
» Round 2, No. 44: Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi State
» Round 3, No. 75: Trysten Hill, DL, Central Florida
» Round 4, No. 114: Gardner Minshew, QB, Washington State
» Round 4, No. 118 (from Redskins): Michael Deiter, OG, Wisconsin
» Round 5, No. 150: Penny Hart, WR, Georgia State
» Round 6, No. 185: Malik Reed, OLB, Nevada
» Round 6, No. 194 (from Seahawks): Dexter Williams, RB, Notre Dame
» Round 7, No. 226: Jordan Brown, CB, South Dakota State

I don't like not seeing an ILB anywhere. Oren Burks hasn't shown us anything that leads us to believe he can be a good NFL starter.

It all depends on how the draft falls.. who's there.. honestly, if the Packers are going BAP.. by the time #12 comes around, Hock can't be very far from the #1 spot.. I think it's a good chance they take him. Even if Hock is a elite prospect.. I think the value a elite MLB or DE could bring would be more than a elite TE.. basically, I think having a elite player on D with a serviceable TE is better than having a elite TE with a serviceable addition on D.

12. Simmons (second best DL of the draft only behind Williams)
30 Tillary, N Dame
With this two guys the rotation on the DL will be fantastic and next year they could let Mike Daniels walk and maybe Lawry too if the deal is not reasonable.
They wouldn´t need to get Wilkerson back and could put that money into the FS position Tre Boston. still free.
44 OL or WR. I assume that the only top 3 TE available will be Smith, I would like better Risner OL or one of the good WR.
75 OL if was not taken earlier, if Williams (Wisconsin) is available will be a great pick, or Nate Davis (Charlotte) to play G.
114 RB
118 Edge
150 Tracy K LSU. Cut Crosby and get some cap space to rollover for next year

You do know Simmons has a torn ACL right? He also repeatedly punched a woman in March 2016. This is the guy you want at pick #12? HARD PASS!

Id be surprised if he goes above round 4.

No, he’ll go in 2nd, like Jaylon Smith and Miles Jack. Definitely worth a look, since Daniels likely gone next year.
