The Packers select G Simon Stepaniak 209th overall

Take a closer look at the Packers sixth round selection (209th overall) in the 2020 NFL draft, Indiana guard Simon Stepaniak.

The Packers added a versatile guard in the sixth round.

MEASURABLES/COMBINE:

Height: 6'4, Weight: 313 Lbs, Arms: 32", Hands: 10 3/8", 40 Yard Dash: 5.30u, Bench Press: 37 Reps, Vertical Jump: n/a, Broad Jump: n/a, 3 Cone Drill: n/a, 20 Yard Shuttle: n/a

CAREER NOTES:

Stepaniak started games at both right guard (10 games) and left guard (1 game) as a senior. Played right guard in all 12 games as a junior. He was a team captain for the Hoosiers last season and was third-team All-Big 10. He missed Indiana's bowl game with an undisclosed injury.

SCOUTING REPORTS:

NFL.com:

COMMENTARY:

Stepaniak plays a nasty style of football and has good upper-body strength. He is a smart football player who picks up stunts well. TheIndiana alum needs to get his pads lower to improve his overall play. His short arms sometime hinder him. Stepaniak has leadership abilities and average athleticism for a guard. He should add depth to the Green Bay offensive line.

Several years ago on All-GBP (I think) there was an analysis position by position as to what combine test was the best predictor for NFL success. As I recall, for OL and DL it was bench reps. I don't remember what they called 'success' or at what level it became a predictor, but that stuck with me.

We all better get used to that this coaching staff wants to be that team that won the game throwing 9 passes. They are signing tight ends, receivers the size of tight ends and 250 pound running backs. I think there are more two tight end sets than 3 wide sets in this teams future.

You know it's time you people quit dreaming. We lost against SF because we couldn't stop the run . Yet KC wins the Super-bowl. We beat KC. And we didn't have to run every play. It's all about getting #12 money. You run that ball without a passing game, don't expect to make the super-bowl.

They lost because we went three and outs without a power running game to stifle some of the 49rs rush.
Martin will probably team inside with Kirksey. Bolton may be healthy enough to make the squad and cover the TEs.? He set the tone for Oklahoma as much as Murray when they teamed up. Can he make the squad with his history of injury? Not in panic mode.

He isn’t a TE and you need to chill.

He is what Vitale looked so great at in camp except that he likes to block. I really like us finding a true H back type if LaFleur will use him in season. Not many of those around, less who can block. I actually like having him.

Not sure how you value him in terms of ideal draft order given rarity and importance of his type to a lot of what LaFleur:Shanahan like to do.

To be honest, I’m kind of baffled at the reaction to both day two picks unless one can’t see that the wind has changed, that Murphy has handed the O to LaFleur and that that has shaped this draft heavily.

Now let’s see what LaFleur can do with this reshaped roster.

CW, watch the Bearcat offense from 2018-19, very impressive. An offensive coach who will rise up the ranks.
Motion....movement...quick release...their Wrs are coming up the next couple of years 4.2, 4.3 guys. the RB a 4.3 guy.

Most on-point comment yet. Fifteen play drives, 10 minutes off the clock, occasional pass to Devante, Lazard, or Sternberger. My question: can Rodgers get with this program? He’s not Jimmy G. or Tannehill.

Sonomaca - The problem is that Rodgers plays best when he gets into a rhythm with his passes. If you have him throwing 10 -15 passes per game why are we paying him nearly $2 million per game? Yes it keeps him healthy but it takes him out of the game.

I see 2020 as possibly Rodgers last season in GB. Early in 2021 he will either be legitimately injured or have a surprisingly long recovery, if at all from an alleged high ankle Sprain. After that “All you need is Love”. Stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

They will be multiple. La Fleur is not a dinosaur. Rodgers will run a faster-paced offense this year. Some of the circus sideshow will go away, but he will still strike deep, just as Brady did with the play action. Shotgun will not go away. I'm more concerned about Pettine's defense.

Stockholder, respectfully get over the WR's! The Pack has some good young WR's already on the team that are ready to blossom!

Love the big OL bodies and road grader types for physical football. How many years have we all whined about the other team imposing their will on the Packers physically? I think LF has some big changes in the passing game next year. Look for ESB to make a big statement. Look for Adams to play more slot. What exactly is the passing role for Jones as they move him around, particularly now that they have A.J. Dillon as a RB? Funchess what role is he going to play? MSV...is he going to be ready for a bigger role with better results?

I'm looking forward to seeing what LF has in mind offensively and some of these young 1-3 year players elevating their game on both sides of the ball. We need to think out of the box and let some of the old thoughts and beliefs go on how the Packers have played for years.

Respectfully noted. But lets get 1 thing straight. I've bitched for a dt last year in Wilkins. The stats show were last against the run. It cost them the SF game. Everyone wanted a Wr signed before the Playoffs. Were in a Deep draft and Nothing happens. The problem isn't going away. Especially now that we have to run. Lets not confuse Reality with dreaming.

Apparently, Pettines holds some power over the GM' s ability to upgrade the Dline or Murphy is budding in??

I don’t understand the need for not one, not two, but three offensive lineman in the same draft. Almost ZERO chance that all three stick. So at least one of them will be gone just by the numbers. Seems like a terrible waste of resources.

Yet not a single WR or DL who actually might have a chance to actually make the team and contribute.

Believe they can make it if they run. The problem is short arms. And Ronyan held his own against Ohio State. I would take 1 More. Sean Polard C. LSU He plays everywhere. Hanson dips his head. This dumps the whole line. The Qb screwed this whole draft up. Regardless they had to get a new OL. Because #12 is Done after this year in GB.

Agree Stockholder. As I posted above why would the Packers pay Rodgers $30 million per season to throw 12-15 passes per game? Early in 2021 Rodgers goes down with an “injury” and Love enters.

Rodgers exeunt for draft picks and we return to the ‘72 Packers for another 2-3 seasons until Love learns how to play QB and the Packers sign FAs with their freed up cap space from Rodgers. After that who knows. Stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

A lot is going to depend on who is out there on the veteran FA market for DL. Packers already signed their FA WR and decided to go with this group as is till TC. Who knows if there is a football season at all? Packers have made clear their needs. We'll see how this plays out...

Short answer: Bahk and Lindsay and Taylor are free agents and Turner's is a club option. Packer offensive line and key backup is to put it bluntly, Capped out. Read TGR latest post for a good overview.

That's an interesting observation--something definitely smells fishy here. To make some of these selections and make them in, I would say a rather haphazard order, is suggestive of some kind of disconnect or that everyone may not be operating on the same page.

Lare you are usually positive so to hear you are not happy with the draft it says a lot.

If honest, this draft absolutely was not what I would have expected or wanted in this draft either (though I do like the Love pick and AJ Dillon is intriguing). However, as I recall 'everyone' on here was saying before last year that the Packers were at least 2 years and more realistically 3 years away thru the draft due to the lack of talent. What happens? The Packers last year win 13 & 3 and go to the NFC Championship game.

With their success right out of the chute don't you think Gutey and LF deserve the benefit of the doubt with this draft? I do and wish more would sit back and contemplate what they quickly accomplished. If they have accomplished this much success in such a short time why not consider there may be another way to achieve success than the conventional thinking on here?
