The Packers select AJ Dillon, RB Boston College 62nd overall

The Packers add some thunder to their offensive backfield.

This guy is going to bulldoze through NFL defenses.

It's a great pick... As much as I like AJones, his future big bucks contract won't be in Green Bay. -- It's more foresight by Gute/MLF. --- (Still need a speedy WR)

Yeah, Baltimore looking great, thanks to Gutekunst and Murphy. The Packers', not so good.
A 3rd string QB
A bowling ball,
and now Gutey's what is it, his 8th or 9th attempt at finding a TE that can play?
But hey, all those great 5th, 6th, and 7th round defensive players and WRs will be cheaper, right Magic Mark?

So far, one guy who might help in a couple years, and one guy who will hopefully replace Jones next year. How about addressing the need on the DL? There were several highly touted prospects when the team chose Dillon. Are they really that sanguine about the performance of the defense against the run last year?

If they were seeking to build up the running game, they should have taken those offers and let Love go. Instead, the moved up to by a Ferrari chassis with no engine to make it go. If they had a plan, it seems like even they don't know it.

This draft is like a nightmare you can’t wake up from, I guess long snapper is next , Gute is tanking this team fast , Rodgers should demand a trade , I have been saying it since Gute did nothing in free agency to fix the run defense, Oren Burks is the starter.

Lemme get this straight: Gutekunst came in and did a couple drafts, hired a coach, Pack goes 13-3 and reaches the NFC ship, and now it's "He's tanking this team, FIRE HIM AAAAAAGHH!!!”
Man it must be a hard life being so emotional and reactionary. Carry on though, these comments after each pick are comedy GOLD.

Everyone is assuming that they looked at the 49ers tape and said, "yep it's all the players fault".

Maybe, just maybe they decided that they messed up the gameplan on defense. Which, they did. Massively. The 9ers had like 180 yards running before contact. Pettine blew that game. He's lucky to be employed.

Then on offense they have a QB who is scared to throw the ball to the middle of the field, and seams to old to learn to run the offense the coach wants to run. So they get a QB, and a big RB and HB because they don't have those. They want to make sure they get the best big RB and HB so Gutey reaches a little to make sure they do.

Do we all like it? Hell no. But I am sure there is a plan there. IDK if it will work. But the finesse Offense flopped in the playoffs for an entire decade so that doesn't work either. I guess we'll see.

Too early to take a back with such limited receiving experience. Should be useful in short-yardage situations and around the goal line, though, which actually does fill a bit of a need.

I like the Dillon pick. When he's grinding out the tough yards and punishing defenses late in games, you might have a change of heart.

You can line him up as a single back and send Jones out wide, looking for mismatches in the defense. This is a great pick.

I think both picks will turn out good for the packers. The first one is more of a longshot, but most quarterback picks are long shots. He had to do it sooner or later, so it’s sooner. The running back is a really good choice, because he’s one of the top picks at that position and he will be a great complement for 30 and 33, Especially when we can’t afford to pay Jones in a year or two.

Dillon is a 4th round talent. He isn't the least bit like Aaron Jones either. If he is the replacement, he better learn to read zone blocking.

Love has a lot of talent. I don't think he is the right choice for GB nor is the timing right, but he has tools and could be good. Odds are against it, but who knows.

Degura is a 6th round talent taken in the third. Not unlike Richard Rodgers. At least this TE can block as an H-Back. He will catch the ball but can't run routes very well and is a possession receiver at his ceiling. He will see snaps and allow Sternberger to move out of the H-back role, but it is still a terrible pick.

I hope GB drafts an offensive lineman in the 5th round. Not because we desperately need an OL, but because Milt Hendrikson can select a good prospect.

Dillon looks to me like an ideal fit for GB. He is an ideal physique to pound the ball yet with the athleticism to do more. We will see how his passing skills are since they seldom three to RBs. I continue fault the type or the player in it. We need to be able to establish the run, grind yards, open holes for Jones and keep our D off the field for longer.

The TE isn’t really a TE in the traditional sense, he is more similar to what Vitale seemed to be going to be but a better blocker and able to play in line, as a Fullback or in an Hback role. Not sure there are very many comparable players. Still, not a pick I expected or sought but one that I can see LaFleur being keen on.

Our offense looks like it is finally going to be closer to what I expected it would be last year.

Teams draft boards vary so much, it is pretty difficult to say "this guy is a 4th" some think he is 2nd or 3rd. There are players teams covet that do not exist on other teams boards.

The QB will be our starter in two years, or sooner if Rodgers is injured.

The RB is going to help convert short yardage , which will keep our offense on the field and our defense off the field.

The TE looks like he has some abilities and he’ll be a nice addition to the unit.

Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Get used to it people. The offense that had a bunch of super duper WRs is gone. We’re going to go smash mouth. We’re going to make these guys like Khalil Mack play run defense. Rodgers isn’t going to make a bunch of mistakes so you can forget that. We’re not going to beat ourselves on offense.

There are other RBs we could have taken at 62, but we took a horse. We’re going to run over people. And you have to stop that before you get to try stopping #12.

Old School offense. Love it.

He is our best slot receiver when Adams is elsewhere. Dual RB sets 1 running and 1 as a WR. That's the best we can hope for unless (2) of our WR's figure something out. It's almost as if Gute wants to pick mediocre talent so we don't have to pay future pro bowl talent any big contracts in 4 or 5 yrs. This RB is big and runs in 4.5's but doesn't look special in any way. Just a bruiser type. Would not hurt to have one but I believe he's picked up a round early if not 2.

I dont get it. Are they saying we have X backs who will be up for pay raises in the future and so were hiring their replacements now? I mean the need to put winners on the field are important now. Rodgers aint getting any younger so you put together a winning team and fill holes, not draft to fill holes two years down the road as you let people go and get nothing in return.
Speilman let Diggs go and avoided a big contract but got 4 count em four decent draft picks for the guy.

Let the dark age begin. The selection of a RB and an unheralded TE make it a trifecta of bad draft picks. Ignore the need at WR. Undermine your HOF QB. None of these picks make any sense. Further, assuming that Gute & co. are happy with their existing receiving corps p they also appear to believe they have no need to bolster a defence that had a chronic inability to stop the run.

Good grief, this is the worst draft since 2015. What a waste. Draft QB 2 in the first round, RB 2/3 in the second round, and an H-Back in the third.

Best quotes I've found:

We've got a formula one QB now driving a Mack truck. Iconoclast

Good idea drafting TEs in weak TE classes and WRs (three of them) in weak WR classes. Nothing like bucking the strength of both draft classes. Paraphrase of Omar Reborn.

I've no words. Clearly OS is right and GB is going to pound the ball, despite really none of their offensive linemen being maulers. Jenkins maybe. Aaron Jones can find the holes in a ZBS, but I don't think Dillon will do as well. Dillon is no replacement for Aaron Jones, maybe for Jamaal.

Awful. Crap. Gute is going to tell me he stuck to his %%ing board. Sticking it hard to AR.

TGR.....do not dismay. You are going to be treated to some old school smash mouth. We will run more, and we will run well. Rodgers isn’t going to take beatings. He will execute very well and he will not turn over the rock.

Dillon.......is a freaking tank. He’ll get carries early in the season to save Jones, and he’ll be helpful in keeping us on the field by converting short yardage. He moves the pile.

If you go back and read the scouting profiles of some of our offensive linemen, you’re going to see they’re run blockers. Personally, it seems easier to block moving forward instead of backwards.

Trust. This offense is built to grind sausage. Enjoy. We haven’t seen this in Green Bay since 2003.

"Good idea drafting TEs in weak TE classes and WRs (three of them) in weak WR classes. Nothing like bucking the strength of both draft classes. Paraphrase of Omar Reborn."

Gute should have drafted 2 TEs last year and 2 WRs this year. It would have made up for years of neglect and positioned the Packers well, no matter if Rodgers is their QB or anyone else. And it would have steered into the strength of the last two draft classes.

Nothing like drafting the QB of the future while the HoF veteran has 4 years on his contract---and then throwing both to the wolves by giving them nothing to throw at. If you want a team powered by the run game, there is no need to invest in QB. But if you make the investment in a QB--give the guy a fighting chance to succeed.

This us utterly mind-numbingly stupid.

Apparently Packer Aaron and Big Al are too depressed to post after the TE pick. Yeah, I understand.

So I posted last year noting the run-heavy bent of the team in the playoffs. Apparently Gutey listens to me, so we're all fucked.

Big RB. TE. No WR. Feel like we are going to see a ton of 2 TE sets. Lots of banging going to happen. Maybe they are on to something. Maybe not. I just feel like the picks are all reaches to some extent.

The QB in the first round and no WR taken in first two days tell me that Gute & Lefluer dont think the problem is with under-talented WR's, they think its with Rogers. How else could you read this? Also the total lack of a big run stopping DT along with any talent at ILB tells me these guys are in denial about how bad our run defense really is.

Still time to get a run stopper DL in later rounds. But nothing to bolster the ILB or Hybrid safety depth? I don’t know who we plan on playing if we have injuries at those positions.

It would appear that Gute likes what we have at WR more than we do and that LaFleur wants to use less WRs

Well, I guess one can’t criticize Gute for not having the courage to plow his own path. It certainly looks like the GB offense is going to look different in future.

Six picks to go i believe. Who knows what Gute will do with them, but it’s pretty clear that this offense is going to be what LaFleur wants whether Rodgers likes it or not. The power has shifted it seems.

Dillon ranked #12, selected #6 in rd 2

Deguara ranked #18, selected #3 in rd 3

this sh!tshow makes Love look like a value pick at 26 and a 4th as the 4th ranked QB selected 4th at the position.

Gut must be released pronto, he is waaaaaay over his head.

Packers are about to be a very different offense. Power run and play action. Less of a spread offense. Be able to move tight ends out as receivers and frustrate defenses. I gotta say I’m liking this draft. Packers are getting weapons. They just don’t look like what we thought they would.

I gotta Say they just took the ball out of #12s hands. What were going to see is a 3 and out. And #4 was right, when he said," the biggest mistake will be taking the ball out of #12s Hands! I've never seen a worst draft by any GM then this one. Gutey has his head up his ass. He must be held accountable for this.

Running spread got them beat by the 9ers twice. Running more two tight end and power back can help control games. Establish the run then let Aaron throw on play action. He’s getting older and having a stronger run game isn’t a bad idea. Plus it fits Matt’s play style more. Overall who really knows until they play games.

Our spread offense sucked. It seems Gute and LaFleur agree. Clearly, however, they came up with a different cure. These are targeted player types. I don’t think this is in anyway accidental. We came out of day 2 with perhaps the best pounding runner and the most versatile Half/Full/TE.

That wasn’t the strategy we expected but it’s way to coherent to be random BPA. Add in a QB yesterday and it seems the wind and offensive philosophy has changed.

"Packers are about to be a very different offense. Power run and play action."

Good thing they traded up for a QB in round 1 to make sure those hand-offs go smoothly.

As long as the Packers continue to have strong ticket sales, nothing will change. Mediocre front office and grade C drafts. I'm really curious to see how McCarthy does in Dallas this year. If he shines, it would suggest that the greater problem during his career in GB was poor personnel more than poor coaching.

At least Gute has a 5th, three 6ths and two 7ths to begin plugging the talent holes on the team.

If Ron Wolf was running the draft board I would be relaxed as he did his best work in the late rounds. Somehow I dont think Gute will be able pull off the same magic as all of the premium talent at WR and ILB (2 weakest positions) is pretty much gone.

You hope it all turns out well but the North got many players we hoped to draft so we will get to see them play just not for the Packers. The Lions and Vikings draft on paper looks very good. If we are not keeping the players past next year ex. Jones why not trade them?

Nagler, I love smash mouth football. Who does Mr Dillon remind me of? The Bus. Jerome Bettis. He was 5'11, weighed 255 lbs and ran the 40 in 4.48. Mr Dillon is 6', 250 lbs and ran the 40 in 4.5. With this guy in the backfield, Aaron Jones is free to operate in a manner that best suits his skills.

Highlight reel impression:

This guy looks and runs like Ryan Grant with stronger leg drive. It's uncanny, actually.

I would not classify him as a bruising back. It looks to me like while he's a no frills rusher who gets the yards in front of him, he has a knack for making himself small / presenting an angle just prior to contact that results in being able to glance of the hit and shed the tackle for extra yardage.

No nonsense back who doesn't leave yards on the field.

It will be interesting to see if he can play in the pros.

How many times did ARod bail out LaFleur's run game plan last year because we had to play catch up when other teams ran thru us on defense. Again LaFleur won because of ARod not the other way around.

I think this is a great pick....everyone thinks this is the end of AJ....I think its the end of Williams time in Green Bay. Jones in motion flanking out and this beast as a single back behind Rodgers.....or vice versa.... GOPACKGO

I love sports and would like to connect my life with it, but when I started receiving offers from coaches, my parents decided that I needed to focus more on my studies. I do not really agree with them, but I found an alternative, I use this https://au.edubirdie.com/math site to get good grades and play basketball in my free time. I think this is the most ideal solution to the problem with strict parents.
