The Four Agreements— Packers Preseason Edition

Four Packers topics we can (or can't?) all agree on

Author Don Miquel Ruiz wrote a book in 1997 called The Four Agreements.  The book went on to become an international bestseller, a guiding light for many people, and, most notably, the fifth installment on the Aaron Rodgers Book Club.  The book hinges on the idea that we all must make agreements with ourselves to reckon with the chaotic world around us, and to better make sense of our place on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space.  Now, I am not a deep thinker like Don Miquel Ruiz (case in point—I wear basketball shorts to work), but, I do make a series of agreements nearly every week during the football season.  In honor of Aaron Rodgers, Don Miquel Ruiz, and deep thinkers everywhere, here are my Four Agreements for the Green Bay Packers preseason.

Editor's Note: This is a guest post by Tim Preece, who has been writing some intriguing posts over at PackersTalk.com in a different style than what is prevalent in the Packers blogosphere. I believe they should prompt some good discussion in the comments and so I thought I would run one here and see what you all think. Perhaps we make this a weekly column? - Jersey Al

Agreement #1—Can we agree to pump the brakes on Jordan Love?

Politics, religion, and Jordan Love.  Three topics you should never bring up in mixed company.  Jordan Love is not as bad as 50% of Packers fans think he is, and he is most certainly not as good as 50% of Packers fans are convinced he is.  Jordan Love is simply this—a young QB who is heading in to his third season, who has only seen a handful of snaps in meaningful football games, and, has only steered the ship five times over two preseason campaigns.  The kid is green as grass.  Is he getting better?  Absolutely!  Is he ready to start NFL football games?  God, no.  Will he ever be? Remains to be seen.

Love's arm strength appears to be as good as advertised.  His footwork is improving.  He stills takes too many checkdowns.  He still shows a lot of the same erratic predilections he displayed at Utah State.  He improved from preseason game one to game two.  That is a good. He still misses passes that most high school quarterbacks can make.  That is bad.   And, anyone speaking in absolutes about him is doing so just for the sake of good theater.  Green Bay still has about 10 months left to decide what to do with Jordan before they have to commit to his fifth year option (spoiler alert—they are not going to pick it up).  Let’s give the kid some time and a little rope.

Agreement #2—Can we agree to just call it teams until they actually do something that is considered special?

New coach.  New personnel.  New nomenclature (we-fense? insert eye roll emoji).  Same clumsy performance on the field.  The Packers special teams unit has apparently spent most of their practice time this offseason trying to decide whether they should wipe their watches or wind their asses. Three swings in this preseason, and three misses. I have faith that Rich Bisaccia and his exquisitely manicured goatee will get this thing turned around.  Or maybe not.   Given that the Packers brought in six kickers to work out this week (because seven would have been overkill), I am assuming we are not seeing Mason Crosby til week five, at the soonest.  Not great.

I wish special teams was as irrelevant as we all like to pretend it is.  But, every time I begin thinking that way, my mind drifts to five minutes left against San Francisco last January and I get a cold chill down my back.  Amari Rodgers has had a few moments here and there this preseason, but I am not sold on him being the answer at punt returner.  And, after seeing Etling’s touchdown run the other day, I am wondering if he wants to try his hand at kick returner (I think I am joking about that).  The preseason is for shoring up weaknesses and polishing rough spots on the squad—since we chose not to use that time for its intended purpose, it looks like we are going to have to double down in season.  My advice—grab something solid and hold on tight—it’s gonna be a bumpy few weeks.

Agreement #3

Can we agree that Tyler Davis would look better in a different team’s jersey?

I am sure Tyler Davis is a nice kid.  I am sure he has a family that loves him.  I hate to be cruel to someone so young.  But, holy crow, has he been bad this preseason.  Davis looks like he is point shaving for Arizona State in the early 90’s.  Are we positive he doesn’t owe some bookie money and his performance thus far is in service of debt repayment?  Maybe we would be a little more sure about agreement #1 if Davis could find a way to, hell, I don’t know, CATH THE DAMN BALL.  LaFleur crowed about Davis’ work on special teams in his press conference on Tuesday (why anyone on teams is getting a shout-out is beyond me). Matt LaFleur knows way more about football than I do.  But, I might know a little more about math.  The NFL only allows 53 players on the active roster.  This Packers team is losing safeties like my cousin Lexi loses AirPods.  There is a realistic scenario where Green Bay only carries two running backs on it’s initial 53 man roster.  It’s looking more like Robert Tonyan is going to be ready for week 1.  The math pencils out that maybe Green Bay would be better suited to enter the season with at least one back-up running back, than  say, a third tight end who is actively trying to help the other team win.  Call me crazy.

Agreement #4—Can we agree that Allen Lazard’s preseason has been WAY too quiet?

Packers fans the world over have wrung our hands drier than Ben Shapiro’s old lady over the last six months since Davante Adams was traded to Las Vegas.  And, while I am still skeptical about our wide receiving unit’s ceiling, seeing Romeo Doubs emergence, coupled with Sammy Watkins recent uptick, has calmed my nerves a little.  The discourse coming out of the Adams trade was that Allen Lazard was ready to ascend the ladder.  This chatter continued through the first two days of training camp.  Then a curious thing happened on Lazard’s march to Canton—this conversation got put on mute.  I don’t want to tell you how many hours a night I spend perusing Packers practice reports (it’s eye-watering).  With the excellent reporting done by Nags, Herman, Demovsky, etc, etc, etc (does any team in the league have as robust a media presence than the Packers?), I feel like my view of practice is closer to a police sketch than a thumbnail.  And in these countless hours, I have noticed a trend—Allen Lazard’s name is nowhere to be found.  It’s like a salad in Rosie O’Donnell’s fridge. Every day you read a piece about Romeo Doubs acrobatic Touchdown grabs, or a blurb about Sammy Watkins tightening up his connection with  Aaron Rodgers.  Hell, even Christian Watson has gotten several mentions over the last few days, even though he has only been back from IR for less than a week.  But no mention of Lazard.

What do we make of this?  Is LaFleur dialing back Lazard’s practice time to lessen any potential risk of injury?  Is Green Bay trying to keep Lazard’s progress a secret to sandbag it’s first several opponents?  Maybe.  Or, is Lazard a little closer to the same guy he has always been—a #3 receiver with great measurables, but lacking the extra gear needed to become a superstar?  I am not sounding the warning alarm just yet.  But, I have definitely raised the protective plastic cap that houses the big red button.

Despite all the practice reports, and preseason games, and endless (and mostly meaningless) post practice locker interviews, we are still seventeen days away from the Packers first game.  Seventeen freaking days.  One thing I think  we can all agree on is that the football season takes way to long to get here.

Well, here we have former first-round-pick quarterback sensations Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold trying to reclaim their careers in Carolina.
Even Kyler Murray of the Cardinals, after a sizzling start to last season, may have slumped in the second half.
Then there's Trey Lance. It seems the 49ers are excited about him as their guy at quarterback starting this season and long into the future; but I wonder if he is as good as Jordan Love right now, and if he has as much upside for the future.
Out of all the highly touted quarterbacks taken in recent drafts, aside from maybe Justin Herbert, Love seems to be as promising as any. He could be similar to Dak Prescott and Josh Allen.
While it's too early to know about Love, it's also important as perspective to remind ourselves that we really won't know about Love for two or three more seasons.
In the meantime, I wouldn't dismiss Love lightly, or trade him too easily.
P.S. A quarterback named Aaron Rodgers has something major to prove this season as far as leading a team to a championship. So, there could be a real debate next winter as to whether Rodgers should be the one to go.
[Edit addition: It's fairly obvious that Joe Burrow is above Love at present, along with Herbert, although that doesn't mean it will be so in a few years. There may be other names I missed who are currently better than Love. It seems most of the young QBs are currently comparable to him, with lots of question marks to go around.]

Swisch, your comment on the value of Love is well received here. I say, look at Jalen Hurts, taken after Love and thrown into the fire with Philadelphia on a team not nearly as good as the Packers.

Last year, Hurt was 8-7. He got 22 passing TDs, and another 12 as a runner. That's better than 2 TDs a game. He's completing 60%. He turns it over a little more than once/game. He was his team's leading rusher, with 780 yards.

I agree with your comments about ARod, as well. I mean, we'll make the playoffs with him. But we might be able to make the playoffs without him, too, so why spend the money on continuing to not advance in the playoffs? An average QB with an average team around him should win 8 or 9 games. An average QB with an above average team around him should be able to win 11

I kind of disagree about not knowing about Love for two or three seasons. I think we'll be good enough so that Love gets time on the field, whether it's a blowout or because Rodgers has a "sore toe" or whatever. The organization will know by the end of the year whether he's the future or it's time to start over.

What we're learning about Love at present, in my opinion, is that he's worthy of an opportunity to be a starter somewhere in the NFL for a season or two.
Then, it'll take a season or two to try to determine if Love is good enough to lead a team to a title, and is the guy at QB for the next ten years or so.
I'm glad to learn more about Hurts, as I didn't realize he had put up such good numbers so far.
It could be a fun discussion here at CHTV as to what young quarterbacks would be preferred to Love if we could make a one-for-one trade right now.

To even speak the names of Herbert, Allen, Burrow, with a side of Prescott, Mayfield, Murray in any objective manner of comparison to Love being close to equal is by far the most outlandish, fantasy driven, blind-optimistic narrative to put forth and thinking it to be a possible, less a low plausible assessment made based on what little Love has shown, or rather, the huge void in what he hasn't been able, regardless of circumstances, to not show a sign of having that the others mentioned have, is utterly laughable.

I wonder if the FO is sincerely discussing how they can retain Rodgers for another 3 years, as it might take Love 5 more years of steps to feel secure in starting a game in the regular season, knowing still, he will not look like any of the former mentioned on the field because Love simply doesn't have their 'it' factors. Gee, Kenny Picket is showing/looking more like the named QBs than your beloved Love.

The coronavirus does come into play as far as NFL rules now and in the future, but I agree that those conversations should be limited.
It's sad that the NFL has been bringing political issues into the game of pro football -- especially as it has seemingly been done in such a way as to insult the bulk of its true fans as rubes and bigots -- but we can try to keep our response to this unfortunate intrusiveness under control.

To mention Jordan love with any of the other names in your post? Yikes! A perfect demonstration of the difference between fandom and reality. Love is not even in the same galaxy or universe. Green Bay is lucky if they can ever get this guy to a point where he could be an adequate backup and actually win a football game if required to. Not a fan! Right now Danny Etling Has a far higher ceiling. If Danny had the same coaching and opportunity to play with the Packers ones and twos for three years I think we’d have a real back up.

how does Love seem as promising as the QB's you mentioned...its laughable...not a Love hater but come on, lets get real...he wasn't great in college and he won't win as a starter in the NFL..im not sure who would pick him up if he were to be let go...how does Love have an upside for the future?? Whats the upside?? He's a career backup, just my opinion of course but I would bet on it...

I've been comparing Love's play to what I've been seeing from other back up Qb's playing and he is about middle of the pack at best. For people to be lauding over this guy thinking he will just step in and replace Rodgers some day is inane. I still to this day do not understand this pick nor do I understand the Gary pick. Gary was a second round projection and we took him at 12? Love wasnt on anyones radar because he didnt do anything in college. We took him and gave a pick up to do it. Gutt must be drinking again.

A nice little lunchtime read.

1. Agree we should pump the brakes on Love. He's our backup. If we're as good as I think we're going to be this year, he'll get plenty of mop up time on the field. If Rodgers gets hurt, Love's our QB. Either way, we're going to know a lot more in six months than we do now.

2. My view on special teams aside, I do think it would be helpful if we took the time to refer to them as The Placement unit, the two Return Units, the two Coverage Units. That way, the units that are doing their job aren't unfairly smeared by other units.

3. I have a foggy recall of an offensive lineman we had about 20 years ago...I think his name was Barber? He was a monster in practices, but just never seemed as good under the bright lights. Others seem to really elevate in front of the crowd and the cameras. Is Davis one of those guys? Either way, if we keep 4 TEs, he'll be one of them and he'll be given an opportunity in a game that counts.

4. I am totally not worried about Lazard. If we get guys blocked, our RBs are going to gain yards and Rodgers will have time to throw to whomever he wants to. My only concern is whether we can do that.

Allen Barbre. Played for the Packers from 2007-10. Then he went to the Seahawks, Eagles, Dolphins, and Broncos. He started for the Eagles for a whole season in 2015. (Thank you, Wikipedia.) But yeah, he was crap for the Packers.

I'm not worried about Allen Lazard either.

Pick consensus points and generally there is more chance of agreement, but is there much to be learned either? Nevertheless, I do like the willingness to come at these pieces in a different tack.

As far as Davis goes, yes, if we find a better option. We’ve failed to do that for a considerable number of years in terms of a true traditional all purpose TE. I think Chesty suggested a severe case of stage fright. I certainly hope that was it and it has passed, never to return.

Stage fright....

I had this pint-sized Rudy type playing DE. They ran a long play around him and got near the goal line. Before I could get everybody collected and replace him, the ball got snapped again, and the QB muffed it, and then accidentally kicked it...straight towards him. It landed in his hands and he ran like a Bat Out Of Hell down the sideline towards the endzone.

Fans were screaming. I was screaming. The whole world was screaming. And he was squeezing that ball so freakin' hard that it squirted loose. Fortunately, it bounced out of bounds.

Yeah. Stage Fright. It's a real deal. And yes, we laughed our asses off when we watched the film.

If we keep 25 offensive players, you could keep 10 offensive linemen and 15 skill position players.

2 QBs
6 WRs
3 TE
3 RB

That’s 14. Room for one more. Some people believe that a 7th WR is more necessary than a 4th TE, but I’m not one of them.

Well, we have one largely blocking/extra O lineman in Lewis, Ine move guy in Tonyan and one F Back in Deguara. The one thing we are missing is the traditional all around TE who can block in line? Lead block a bit and be a true part of the passing game. That’s a critical piece in the LaFleur offensive system tree and in allowing the illusion of complexity. That’s supposedly Davis. So we really do not have very similar players in that group and the overlap is questionable. If Davis were good it would be a big help.

Watching the Vike's and they have another jewel of a rookie TE, 6'7, very fast, sure handed, broke a tackle and ran for 22 yards. Ya this guy looks better then anything we have and he is like 4th string on the Vikes.
That is my issue with the Pack, Gm picks. Gutt is the worst Gm in football IMO.
There are too many dumb asses on this team that apparently Gutt doesn't evaluate brains and the ability to get players who dont do dumb ass things.

Interesting read sprinkled with some wit. Pre-season is not about wins or losses, and the chance to see the 2nd and 3rd string players compete for a roster spot. The Packers know which 11 will be on offense and defense with the exception of an offensive lineman or two. Special teams will have new faces on week #1 as roster cuts are due by Tuesday. Packer fans are patiently waiting for that Vikings game with only a few questions to be decided. We do know that Aaron will be focused along with Jones, Dillon, and the starters. The first-string defense is wanting to show what they have learned in the offseason training and are chomping at the bit. I see an almost full glass to the 2022 season.

I like the writing style. Made me smile a few times.

I'm in the middle on Jordan Love too, although I'm in a slightly better place than I was before the preseason games. He showed the improvement that he needed to show. Not much more than that, but enough. He doesn't remind me of Brett Hundley anymore. I think he looks kind of graceful, actually, and relatively calm, even when he is calmly throwing interceptions.

I think the special teams were respectable in the first preseason game. Things got a bit leaky in the second game, and the third game was a train wreck. But I am going to withhold judgment until the regular season starts. There are some positives: The punter looks good, he's a better holder than the last punter, the long snapper appears to be competent, and Amari Rodgers looks quicker and more confident as a returner. And from what I've heard, Mason Crosby should be kicking in week one. Fingers crossed that the coverage and blocking on returns is improved when we have our best guys in there.

Tyler Davis looked bad in the preseason games, but mostly it was three plays. The interception that bounced off his hands was mostly on him, but the throw from Jordan Love was a bit overcooked, and it was bad luck to have it bounce straight up into the air. The fumble was bad, but sometimes defenders punch the ball out, so I'm not going to label Davis as a fumbler based on that one play. And the bad holding penalty happened because of a play design that had the TE (Davis) blocking a pass rusher one-on-one in open space. Lots of TEs would look bad in that situation. Davis is the #4 TE and may not see the field much anyway.

As for Lazard, he is one of the last players I'm worried about.

Agreement #1; what I saw from Love these preseason games was what I was hoping. He threw a lot of nice balls and showed confidence. He wasn’t throwing to first team WRs or TE either. His receivers were rookies and guys trying to make the 53. I will not be surprised once (if) ARod retires, Love will be the best QB in the NFC Central. He is the Hope and future now.

Agreement #2; special team kick return blocking and coverage in general was pretty bad. Hopefully there are some starters sprinkled in that shores that up. We found our punter though.

Agreement #3; Davis has had a terrible preseason and his performance merits being cut.

Agreement #4; not worried in the least about Lazard. Of the WRs, Mr Watkins is the guy I will be interested to see how he does.

You need to stop drinking!
Love is actually as good as he is going to get. He cannot lead a team to victory with that arm which is terribly inaccurate. Did you notice they rarely called a long sideline pass because they know he cant do it.
There is NO special teams. They are too slow to meet the returner at the contact point giving up good yardage before they can make contact. They are too afraid to tackle but try the grab an arm routing that never works. Its not the coaching its the players with lack of speed and tackling thats the problem.
Davis is so over rated. He couldnt make most other teams.
Watson didnt play, wonder why. What are they hiding. This would have been a perfect op to get him some game time. No Watson.
I'm already planning on being super disappointed.

Yah, maybe creep was too strong a word for the fellow. I don’t actually know the guy. But making fun of unrelated people as an attempt at humor is creepy. I also agree with you that when I look in the mirror I DO look kinda creepy myself. I had no business slamming a guy for personal attacks and then doing so myself. So, your criticism of me is spot on.

Point #1: Jordan Love. To suggest that all Packers fans have it wrong about Love is odd. Are you suggesting all fans are delusional in one direction or another? Letting someone develop is necessary, especially at QB. Unless you want to join the ranks of the other multiple teams in the NFL who are constantly chasing that elusive QB that will "put them over the top". The Colts added Matty Meltdown. The Titans are changing, again. And the New York teams are hoping for the best. Will the Packers exercise Love's fifth year option? Let's wait and see.
Point #2: Being able to see the third game on TV was depressing as far as "teams" was concerned. If there isn't significant improvement in that area very quickly, this could be another bottom five finish in "teams" rankings. What to do? They brought in a coach who was successful elsewhere. He, in turn, brought in some guys he had worked with before. The result? Continued poor performances. If this doesn't work, what is the next step?
Point #3: Tyler Davis seems to be a workout warrior that shrinks once there is something on the line. Like his job. And I always feel a small pang for all those guys who are cut during the process. They have spent years honing their craft, dreaming of making it to the big time, only to find out that only a select few will actually be able to play professional football. And it won't be them. It has to be soul crushing. But it's also life. Not everyone can do everything. But it still has to hurt.
Point #4: So, Lazard has not gotten a lot of attention during coverage of training camp. Neither have Jones nor Dillon. Are you worried about them? One rarely hears about Alexander. Reason to be concerned? Or is the media more interested in the shiny new arrivals? Doubs has gotten an outsize amount of coverage, but has shown a tendency to drop easy passes in the games. There are a lot of guys who are not getting attention on a regular basis; it's the new additions who are getting more scrutiny. Lazard is in his fifth season of catching passes from Rodgers. They are comfortable with each other. Is he Davante Adams? Nope. But he does seem to be able to be the next Jordy Nelson. Again, we'll see once the real games begin in two weeks or so.

1) Sure, Jordan Love is ready to start; he'll probably tell you so. He's just not ready to fill #12's shoes--nor should the Packers expect him to do so, ever. Yes, he still needs to make improvements with those shorter throws and his decision-making. But we've invested enough resources in the defense and running game so that we shouldn't necessarily need a HOF-caliber QB under center to be successful--at least at some point.

2) "Teams": You're going to have be actively looking for return specialists and gunners instead of hoping to mold them from the leftovers of the roster. Maybe try to specifically find these guys first and then try to mold them into useful reserves for the offense and defense, I don't know.

3) Davis: Probably have to hang in there with him at least until Tonyan returns. How many balls do you expect Deguara and Lewis to catch? This position will have to be a higher priority in the draft--sooner rather than later.

4) Lazard: Were we expecting him to blossom into some kind of mega-superstar? He's one of the finest blockers in the game and a very useful piece of this offense. I don't think we need to hear a lot about him in the preseason; almost everyone else in the receiver room, yes.

It could be that less is more at quarterback.
Although at present Love is generally less than Rodgers, Love seems to outdo Rodgers in terms of getting the ball out of his hands sooner when he drops back to pass.
Perhaps Love could actually make up for having less experience than Rodgers -- in some measure -- by being quicker in his throws, as well quicker to snap the ball.
In general, if Love is truer to the MFL offense than Rodgers, he could have the offense on a better rhythm.
Over time, if Love is more coachable than Rodgers, he could be better than Rodgers in terms of team performance for championships -- even if Love doesn't win any individual MVPs.
P.S. It's worth noting that there are questions about Rodgers, too, including his age. Most of all, is Rodgers able to get the Packers over the top?

I've got a question. I haven't owned a tv in over 10 years, so I just catch the updates online. One thing that Rodgers does that has always driven me crazy is his running the clock down to 0:01 before the ball is snapped. Just curious if Love does the same thing. I hope not.

I haven't seen him do it, but there's probably no reason to do it in the preseason. I doubt that he would do it anyway. That's an Aaron Rodgers specialty.

13Times there are times when I wish Rodgers would just come up to the LOS and snap the ball especially on short yardage or goal line run plays before giving the defense a chance to dig in. However, on other plays I'm OK with it because he is reading the defense as long as he can and he is looking for mismatches and/or the best one on one matchup on every play. And let's face it, he must be doing something right based on his W/L record. his QB rating and his TD/Int ratio.

Rodgers is a matchup QB. For better or worse this is hold over from being coached by MM for 15+ seasons. MMs passing game was based on receivers winning their one on ones which is why we didn't see much motion or receivers stacks while MM was the Packers HC.

MLFs offense is more diverse and dependent upon running multiple plays out of the same look. In the end it's about execution especially by the OL. Rodgers has been extremely effective in both systems.

Running the clock down also helps our defense especially if we have a drive going. Those extra seconds where the ball is not snapped can add anywhere from 45 seconds to about 2 minutes more rest for the defense depending on the number of plays in the drive. It might be frustrating to watch but its better than snapping the ball without having read the defense accurately and throwing picks or getting plays blown up in the backfield.

Thanks, Since '61

Based on his historically low interception rate, I guess it makes sense. But it just seems like it gives the defense an advantage knowing when the ball will be snapped, especially on running plays.

Too bad all that extra time didn't help him see Lazard running free....ok, time to let that go.

Hunter S Thompson should be an announcer for the preseason games. We just have to reanimate the ashes that were shot out of a canon. We could build him stronger, and faster than before. With that Allen Lizard will go off this season doing what he does best. It’s a physical brand of football where fear doesn’t enter the mind. He will be chipping, and blocking anyone in his lane. He isn’t a fantasy football player. He is a football player. Green Bay is gonna be fine. The entire league is going to take a minute to ramp up to quality games. There will be some ugly wins and losses. And yes it’s gonna be a fun year, and it’s always a great year to be a Packers fan. The fear and loathing is left for the rest of the NFC North. Will Green Bay have a replacement for the current Hall of Fame quarterback named Aaron Rogers? That is what we will know sometime down the road. It’s looking like the 53 is about the shape up, and real football games are about to become a reality again.

The Four Opinions you need not agree to:

Love is a better backup today, by far. He's a long term keeper.
STs are not better. Why so many years of futility is a mystery, wrapped in a shroud, surrounded by an enigma.
T. Davis is going to be TE #4, as Tonyan gears up.
Lazard is as ready as most every other starter with no preseason games snaps.

I enjoy pithy and snarky writing as long as it is fair and respectful. Let John Gault write some more...

I dont see why people are having so much dam trouble with the special teams. Its simple. The guys on it are too slow and they cant tackle. The returners are getting the ball and getting up to speed before our guys are even in the area. We dont have any barn burners meeting these guys at the catch and making tackles. They dont exist on this team. Our new coach just proved its not the coaches its the lack of talent available.

#1 (spoiler alert—they are not going to pick it up). Even the best laid plans can go astray -
#2 Maybe you should read George Allens guide to Special Teams.
#3. Tyler Davis is a waste of time. The Run and shoot was built with 4 Wrs. And a extra OT might be A better option!
Crazy isn’t the word. =. Kylie Hill got hurt while returning a Kickoff. An extra RB or 2 can be worth it’s weight in gold . (to the Sts.)
(Bet Gutey brings in a Rb from another team.)
#4 Lazards future will be at TE. So I don't care if they cut Davis or not. I thought 8 WRs were too many. But why not?
If Lazard moves around. No team could get four good Cbs on the field.

Point #1: Love still has a long way too go. He needs more regular season playing time if he is ever going to become consistent. If Rodgers stays with the Packers for 2-3 more seasons and he remains healthy it is unlikely that Love will ever see that opportunity in Green Bay.

Point #2: STs could be one of the few areas that will this team back this season along with WR and OL.

Point #3: I expect the Tyler Davis will have a chance to redeem himself during the regular season since the Packers will probably retain 4 TEs on the 53.

Point #4: Lazard is a solid #2 or #3 receiver. Plus he does an excellent job of blocking on running plays. Lazard will be fine. No one will confuse him with Adams but he will do a solid job for the Packers blocking and receiving. We don't need a #1 receiver. WE need guys who will catch the ball and who are willing blockers in the ground game and we'll be fine.

Thanks, Since '61

Totally agree with a few exceptions.
#1 - Love might have his 5th year picked up - maybe like the 49ers keeping Garapalo - somebody might trade for his known salary - which will be at the bottom end of the scale as there is no performance add ons - and that is only if AR decides to stay for 3 years otherwise he is GB's starter in his 5th year.
#2 ST's could hold us back - but past history seems to indicate when we dont have the big
#1 receiver the QB's spread things around and we have an nice double headed backfield.
#3 Davis is gone hopefully and deserves if from his performance - and from our ST in the 3 games - dont know what Lafleur was smoking to think that Davis was good there - didnt see and outstanding plays
#4 Agree - Lazard and others will all be number 1 receivers - AR saying that is mind games for the other teams D coordinators.

I'm not so sure that the Packers will be willing to pick up Love's 5th year option at a cost of $19.6 million, unless Rodgers has announced his retirement. If not I would expect the Packers will try to trade him rather than release him or pickup his 5th year option. Time will tell. Thanks, Since '61
