Ted Speaks, Says Nothing. Film At 11.

Despite reporters best efforts, the Packers general manager was as unforthcoming as ever when answering questions about his team.

Well, it wasn't for lack of trying.

Despite reporters getting more and more creative with their questions, Ted Thompson kept up his annual tradition of saying as little as possible while meeting with the press here at the NFL's Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Covered in his short time at the podium and in the hallway afterwords with local reporters:

  • Most importantly, Ted indicated that both tight end Andrew Quarless and offensive tackle Derek Sherrod are doing well. Both should be able to play at some point next year, though whether they'll be ready for the start of the season remains to be seen.
  • Also on the injury front, this time regarding Nick Collins, Ted said "Everything I’ve heard has been positive." Obviously, he is looking forward to Collins getting the OK from the specialist when he sees him in March.
  • Asked about teams "getting hot" at the end of the year, like the Packers did in 2010 and the Giants did this year, as opposed to going 15-1, Thompson said he would much prefer going 15-1 and seeing what happens in the tournament. Can't say I disagree.
  • Asked about possibly placing the Franchise Tag on Matt Flynn and what his assesment of Flynn is as a quarterback, Thompson replied "Matt is a professional. Our policy is to try to keep all of our players. I’m not going to tell the other 31 teams what I think of Matt Flynn"
  • He also added "I wouldn’t speculate on what our plans would be"
  • Asked about team needs, Thompson responded: "We think we have a pretty good team. We don’t critique publicly what we think our needs are"

You get the point.

One moment of levity made it into the proceedings. Ted closed with this gem:

I’m a horrible guy to be up here answering questions I’m not going to answer. I’m not going to tell any trade secrets. It’s just not going to happen. I could be like opposite George on Seinfeld. I tell our scouts to listen and not talk.

Here's an idea:
Tag-and-trade Flynn to the Dolphins for an exchange of 1st-round picks.

The Packers get to move up for one of the first-tier OLBs (Ingram, Upshaw) instead of settling for a second-tier guy. The Dolphins get a QB and get to retain their own 1st-rounder. A similar situation to the Hasselbeck trade, and it provides commensurate exchange on the trade value chart....

Slight edit:
I meant that the Dolphins "don't completely sacrifice" a high pick instead of "retaining their own" pick.

Now there's a different take. I kinda like the idea, I must say.

If they get up that high, I'd like to see Michael Brockers in green and gold, and then Derek Wolfe in the second. Boom. Put Raji at nose, and let those two collapse the edge from the five technique.

I Love It. Its like Texas Hold Um Poker. TT, just do your thing, and remember the Colin Jenkins mistake. That is where we need the help most as it will stop the secondary from having to cover for way too long!

Is Ted or any other of the GM's required to answer questions? If not, then I'd say Ted went above and beyond.

I can see Ted sitting shirtless in his apartment, eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery....

" I’m a horrible guy to be up here answering questions I’m not going to answer". That pretty much sums up the way Ted approaches these things, more power to him.
