Surviving Sunday: Packers news, notes and links for the football deprived

There are rumblings that the Packers are prepared to move on from fullback John Kuhn. This is big news, because Kuhn is a fan favorite and a capable veteran pass blocker. Every time he touches the ball he also sets off the KUUUUUUUHN! chants, which are fun to participate in live at Lambeau, at home on TV or from Packers fans who travel to a road game.

So, if Kuhn is gone, who will Packers fans chant for? Forget about which receivers will make the team or how the Packers offense will rebound from a down year. All I want to find out during the exhibition season is which player will step up and claim the chants of Packers fans across the world.

There are criteria a player must meet in order to be deemed worthy of a regular name chant from the Lambeau faithful:

  • Your name has to be chantable. One might think that Ripkowski will transition into Kuhn's name-chanting role, but you can't easily pronounce, let alone chant, the name Ripkowski (especially after seven Miller Lites).
  • You can't be a star player with a huge contract. The big stars get plenty of attention. There's no need to chant their name whenever they do something. Name-chanting is reserved for role-type players who chip in with nice plays once every three games or so.

Now that we've established the criteria, here are the candidates:

Jayrone Elliott
I could see JAY-ROOOOOOOOONE! chants breaking out if the undrafted free agent from Toledo gets more snaps and gets after the QB.

Datone Jones
Jones is a first-round pick, so that could disqualify him. However, he hasn't done much as a pro and DA-TOOOOOOONE would make for a solid-sounding chant.

Jeff Janis
Ok, obvious choice here. Janis checks off all the boxes: White, cult hero, seventh-round pick, chantable last name. The potential is there for years of Janis! Janis! Janis! chants resonating throughout Lambeau.

Ladarius Gunter
Another undrafted free agent who might get a shot at more playing time. Guuuuuuunter! would sound somewhat similar to Kuuuuuuuuuhn! so don't count out Ladarius becoming the next Packers folk hero.

Kyle Fackrell
Use your imagination on this one. FAAAAAAACK can be used whenver Fackrell makes a play, or when Fackrell or the Packers, ahem, eff up.

There are five solid candidates. Do any of them resonate like KUUUUUUHN!? Probably not, but you have to start somewhere. Did I miss anyone?

Side note: Some people didn't like the Kuhn chant. These people also probably hate cheese curds and were disappointed when the Packers won the Super Bowl because they didn't shut out the Steelers. Some people just aren't fans of fun, I guess. Sure, the fullback dive got to be an annoying playcall, but there was nothing annoying about chanting KUUUUUUHN! whenever No. 30 touched the ball.

Packers news, notes and links

  • Did you know that Ted Thompson was once so jacked up from lifting weights that he lost speed? Or that he was nicknamed "Ted the Toe" for his kicking prowess? Read this story from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel if you want to know more about the man, the myth, the legend: Packers general manager Ted Thompson.
  • One minute you're rolling along, trying to establish a nice little career in the NFL. The next minute you suffer a major ankle injury. Then you're cut from the team in the offseason. This is what, unfortunately, has happened to Josh Boyd.
  • Not re-signing Mike Neal is part of the Packers overall re-boot at the outside linebacker position, writes Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press Gazette. Here's hoping Jayrone Elliott receives more snaps and makes a major leap.
  • Here are some Packers breakout candidates for 2016 from Andrew Mertig at PackersTalk.com. My money is on Elliott.
  • Here's an interesting Reddit discussion on strange team memorabilia. My strangest piece of Packers swag is probably this really weird bobble head type of guy wearing a Jerry Kramer jersey sitting atop a hand-painted Packers "trophy."
  • Jodie Foster is a Packers fan? I guess so.

Non-Packers links and other nonsense

  • TNT's "Inside the NBA" is the only sports studio show worth watching these days. Here's an awkward moment where Charles Barkley asks Dwight Howard why he's so disliked.
  • Sports Illustrated had an outstanding piece on Vin Scully this week.
  • Is Spurs coach Gregg Poppovich mean? Kyle Koster, writing for the Big Lead, thinks so. Koster argues that Popp's belittling of media members makes him a jerk. Instead of being a jerk, Popp should just answer the questions like most every other coach and athlete. I'm not saying Koster is wrong, but aren't we, the consumers of media, partly to blame for how Popp interacts with the press? Nobody posts vines or social media videos of Popp or other coaches giving insightful answers to how he sets his starting lineups or how he attacks a zone defense. That's because videos of those types of answers don't generate clicks. What does generate clicks is confrontation: Popp laughing at a stupid question, Popp getting angry, Popp calling a question stupid and dismissing the reporter. Before getting too uppity and calling out how Poppovich handles the press, we need to look in the mirror and slap ourselves on the wrist for often favoring confrontation and jerk-like behavior over actual insight and thoughtful responses.
  • If I didn't have cancer, two kids and a wife, I'd totally go on Rob Gronkowski's party cruise.
  • Cancer update: Another round of treatment began on Thursday. I've actually felt prett good for a change. So good, in fact, I took my 2 year old to his first live pro wrestling event on Saturday night. Good times! But enough about me. My wife has been a real rockstar since our second son was born nearly two weeks ago. If I'm knocked down from chemo, she's been handling the two kids on her own like Mike Daniels handles an overmatched offensive guard. Just dominating. Thanks honey!

Good for you and Ur # beastmode wife. My wife has recently been diagnosed with Lupus and some days she feels ok and others she can't do much of anything but rest. My son wears me out on the days she's feeling bad but I wouldn't change it for the world. Star wars ...video games..bike rides..rocket copters.. every day with your children is a blessing. Keep up the good fight bro. And as for your chant and breakout player yeah I'm betting on Jayrone as well. I feel like the only thing that's held him back is lack of reps....

It might be backwards but I check the Cancer Update on "Surving Sundays" before I actually read the article. Adam is the Epitome of Positivity, at least in my eyes. Way to go Adam! My only question was did you go to the wrestling event for your 2 year old or yourself?? ; )

As far as replacements for Kuhn, I'd think we need a guy with a single syllable name, just would seem flow better. If Eddie Lacy comes back and runs for 1500 yards and 17 TD's I'm sure we'll hear tons of Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. Or maybe it will be chants of Jordy, Jordy, Jordy OR Monty, Monty, Monty. Personally I'm ready for all three to echo through Lambeau this year.

The fans used to chant lacy over and over when they new he was getting the ball but it wasn't good because the offense couldn't communicate. Wait till after the play, right?

Eeyore.
Chicken Little.
Crap colored glasses.
And more recently, a bit bipolar, just for giggles, I guess. CHTV's own little BiPolar Express.

Obviously fans enjoy this team in different ways. To me, blind optimism is a little bit naive, but blind pessimism is just sickening.

And this whole "you might be satisfied with making the playoffs, but I need SB trophies" philosophy is just psycho. Like, what, you're a more "intense" fan because you've just got such "high standards"? Do you apply these "high standards" to any aspect of your own life that you actually have some control over? Are you the top salesman in your company? Did you make VP in only a few years? Or do you just sit on your ass and demand these things from others? OR, do you just apply it to your ENTERTAINMENT? (And face it, that's what the NFL is. Entertainment.) How about "Every time I spend my hard earned cash at the cinema, I demand that each film win an academy award!" That sounds dumb too.

Rant complete. Now back to silly remarks.

Maybe but I don't see it, he does have almost 4 full months until the games actually count so I think Montgomery will be just fine. Why is it every injury suffered by a "Packers Player" puts them on the chopping block the next in your mind. It's like Rodgers, he has one "Off Season" and he's done, washed up, on the trade block in your eyes.

Same for Lacy. Guy is the best running back we've had since Ahman Green, but he's out of shape one year and gets crucified. I was on here defending him despite his weight issues, knowing that he'll bounce back. I'll bring laughing after my fantasy drafts about the steal I'll get from everyone who passes on him.

You and I both. Lacy isn't coming back to TC out of Shape. That P90X is no joke, have several friends that have made a 90 day commitment to it and they said they felt amazing, best shape of they're lives.

Lacy's "Love for The Game" was questioned when drafted and again last year. Eddie is also a very smart young man who I think loves the game enough to know this season is the season where he gets PAID and he's on a team that's more than good enough to win a SB.

Side note...He DESERVED to be crucified last season. As a Packers Fan I have to admit I was a little "Embarrassed" when he ran out of gas after 30 yards on the 60 yard run vs Arizona. That WAS pretty sad Friend.

Sadly (I'm not in favor of this...), if a chant fills the hole, it is most likely going to be after a big play by Kyler. "Fack You!" seems inevitable... :-(

On the contrary - I think it's awesome when fans curse, or boo, or do anything not PC/not made for TV in general. Simply imagining the ESPN/FOX/ABC/CBS big-wigs getting uncomfortable and knowing there's nothing they can do about it brings a goofy grin to my face.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't like all the swearing I hear at games these days. A crowd chant of "Bullshit" after a bad call is cool, but I get sick of all the meatheads dropping F-bombs at the other players or just shouting F-bombs for no reason.

Perhaps you misunderstood me - I'm not talking about one fan (or one player) swearing on mic just to be a jerk. Nor am I talking about fighting/vomiting on your neighbor/cursing out a kid.

I'm talking about thousands of fans intentionally acting up in a way that makes TV and league execs uncomfortable. Anytime I see that, it makes me laugh.

Adam, great to hear you are still fighting the good fight with the cancer thing. One note above: I believe you have credited the Ted story to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, I believe that's from the Green Bay Gazette at PackersNews.com (if it's the same one I gave a link to yesterday).
I vote for "Riiiiiiiip" when Ripkowski rips through the opposition (loved his one catch last year where he knocked the opposing player back about 3 yards! Good luck with your treatment, everyone here is pulling for you and Karma has to mean something, Right?

The author is from the journal. I posted about it the other day recommending it and some assbag gave me a dislike. The papers are all in together these days. Every media source has affiliates and swap but the author usually gets credit.

Cancer affects the whole family. Prayers to you and your family during this time of your recovery. Also I think it would be a fitting tribute to any player who makes a big play for the fans to still chat KUUUUUUUUHN. At least for a while.
