Spencer Brown Draft Prospect Profile and Scouting Report

Illinois Offensive Tackle Apencer Brown is profiled in advance of the 2021 NFL Draft

Name: Spencer Brown

School: Northern Iowa

Year: Redshirt senior

Position: Right tackle

Measurements: 6-foot-9, 321lbs

STATS:

N/A

General Info:

Spencer Brown attended Lenox High School where he played eight-man football as a defensive end and tight end. He also ran track and played baseball, basketball and golf.

After redshirting in 2016 for Northern Iowa, Brown transitioned to right tackle and packed on the pounds. He gained 80lbs in weight over his career with the Panthers.

Brown started five games during his redshirt freshman campaign before a season-ending knee injury. He started every game in his redshirt junior season, earning second team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference recognition.

Brown decided to forgo his redshirt senior year, which was delayed until the spring due to COVID-19, and instead prepare for the draft.

Positional Skills:

Pass Pro: Brown has smooth feet which isn’t surprising considering his background and looks comfortable in his stance with good knee bend. His hands are ready to go and he punches them into the chest of his opponents. Brown towers over his opposition and this helps him keep rushers at arm’s length. He’s not overwhelmingly powerful though, and NFL calibre rushers will cause him problems if he doesn’t add some more weight. On occasions when Brown is left with no-one to block, he takes it upon himself to hit the nearest opponent hard. He can be initially beaten by speed if he fails to get his hands on the defender, but usually recovers with his athleticism. This won’t save him at the next level.

Run block: Brown’s movement skills show up again in the run game, allowing him to get to the second level, where he always looks for work and is able put his hands on defenders. As a straight-ahead run blocker, Brown gets the job done and plays with laudable aggression, but he isn’t dominant. Adding more bulk to his relatively slim frame and learning better technique should give him more leverage in that regard and lead to improved play. Brown wasn’t asked to pull much at Northern Iowa, but everything he demonstrates athletically indicates he’d have no trouble doing so.

Fit with the Packers:

Spencer Brown lacks experience as an offensive tackle and would undoubtedly be a project if selected by the Packers, but the potential upside is big for this intriguing prospect.

Brown carries his current weight well so should have no problem adding more, and his movement abilities mean he’ll fit well in Matt LaFleur’s zone running scheme.

But he could probably only play at tackle due to his tall stature. With arguably the best left tackle in the NFL in David Bakhtiari on one side, that leaves only right tackle as a potential spot for Brown.

He could have used one more season in college to refine his game and boost his draft stock, but COVID-19 had other ideas.

The level of competition Brown played against in college will also raise questions, but he did himself justice at the Senior Bowl and didn’t look out of place.

Yes, we have a man like him... in fact, a Nijman.

Nijman was great at warming the bench. Maybe this year he'll get to play more.

Spencer Brown seems like a nice option if they go other directions early.
