Sherrod Starts At Left Guard & Other Notes From Practice

The Packers first round draft choice lined up at left guard with the starters tonight at the Packers' first training camp practice of 2011.

While not exactly a surprise, it was interesting to note that first round pick Derrick Sherrod ran with the first team at left guard tonight, ahead of veteran T.J. Lang, who spent the majority of practice with the second unit.

Tonight and tomorrow night's practices are not in pads. The notes below consist mainly of things I found interesting while reading various coverage of practice on Twitter as it pertains to the depth chart. I will be at the first padded practice of the season on Monday night, where I hope to get a good look at some of the new faces in action for the Packers.

Some other tidbits from the Packers first training camp practice:

  1. Frank Zombo begins as the starter opposite Clay Matthews.
  2. Speaking of outside linebackers, Brad Jones was running with the second team behind Matthews at left outside linebacker.
  3. Marshall Newhouse played exclusively at left tackle, including a stint with the number one offense.
  4. Charlie Peprah started at strong safety and C.J. Wilson began at left defensive end. However, Morgan Burnett and Mike Neal were being held out as precautions and are still expected to start at those positions.
  5. Speaking of non-participants, Andrew Quraless sat out practice. That was a bit of a surprise.

We'll see what McCarthy has to say about the above and everything else that went on at practice shortly.

Don't know what Lang did last season to earn the first look at LG, a position he only played a few snaps his first two years. Might as well start w/your shiny, new first-rounder to see what he's got.

TJ may be fighting for a roster spot this year as much as a starting position.

Is it really that, or is it more a matter of all the camp Sherrod missed and they're trying to get him some simple reps as soon as possible?

That's a good point. Lang knows the offense and all the calls and whatnot. They might wanna get Sherrod some reps to make sure he knows what he's doing out there.

It's been proven year in and year out that whoever starts at a position on the 1st practice of camp is guaranteed to be in that position for the rest of the season... or not. Every camp with this, people act like the 1st week or two mean anything as far as who will start over who, the coaches have to get a feel for the new players, wouldn't be surprised at all if Teeej is with the 1's on the morrow.

TJ's roster spot is more than safe, he is the LG on 9/8. Watch.

Lang stepped in at every spot minus center and plyed fairly well, showing high intelligence and a quick learning ability. He definitely deserves a hard look at LG.

Interesting indeed, but I see Sherrod getting first go at LG as nothing more than a formality at this point. I think Lang, McDonald and maybe even Newhouse will also see reps with the 1st team as camp rolls on, still it's interesting nonetheless.

Keep an eye out for Anthony Levine, who I think has a real shot to make the roster.

Seeing a fully dreaded Davon House rocking the #31 jersey is awesome, and i'm really looking forward to watching him this offseason.

Love Training Camp.

Hey kinda confused on a few backup O-Linemen... What string and what spot did Theo Sherman and Adrian Battles play at?

I heard second string looked like this: MN rotating with DS, TL, NM, CS, CC

MN rotating with DS, TL, NM, CS, CC

translated

Marshall Newhouse rotating with Derek Sherrod, TJ Lang, Nick McDonald, Caleb Schlauderaff, Chris Campbell

Those initials are giving me "tired-head"(*)

Hey came up with another question or two: Did M.D. Jennings play at CB or S?

Who was the third O-line?? I know Marshall was at LT, Ray Dominguez at RT, but I'm guessing Theo Sherman at LG(?), Sampson at C, UNSURE of RG---- Got Battles and Dietrich-Smith...

Goddamnit forgot Packers fans are such diehard nutjobs. To care about what undrafted free agents are playing well and may end up in the 53 man roster or the PS...

Frank Zombo sucked too. That Sack in the SuperBowl was just pathetic.

Well, obviously Packers fans are also thinskinned, because what I said wasn't a complaint, more a compliment...

Sorry if I offended you by that, but I'm not religious, to me it's just an expression.

The intent of the message was to say that Packers fans are so diehard that they care about the (perceived) least important of things on their team. I envy it, I do care about this team, but I'm not one to care about the 3rd stringers as some guys do.

I like Marshall Newhouse's potential, but I think he's too lanky to play G.

Management really like Lang at RG and Newhouse at T. IMHO he won't compete for the guard spot.

I can't wait until people start obsessing about the performance of the Packers in preseason games... *chuckle*
