Sharing is Caring: Green Bay Packers' Draft History Nuggets
By rex.sheild
NFL Draft week is finally here. CHTV will be your premiere, go-to destination for everything draft related this week. So, let’s get draft week underway with some interesting nuggets about the Green Bay Packers’ draft history.
- Green Bay has 10 selections in the 2023 NFL Draft as of publication, the fifth year in a row that the team has had at least 10 picks entering the draft, according to Packers.com.
- The Packers have used their first selection on an offensive player in only seven of last 23 drafts. In fact, from 2011 to 2019, the team selected a defensive player with their first draft selection. And since GM Brian Gutekunst took over at the helm, he has only taken one offensive player with the team’s first selection.
Full list: TE Bubba Franks, 2000, 14th overall; WR Javon Walker, 2002, 20th overall; QB Aaron Rodgers, 2005, 24th overall; WR Jordy Nelson, 2008, 36th overall; OT Bryan Bulaga, 2010, 23rd overall; OT Derrok Sherrod, 2011, 32nd overall; QB Jordan Love, 2020, 26th overall.
- Despite the heavy emphasis on defense in the first round over the last 23 drafts, Green Bay has used 88 picks on offense, compared to 78 on defense, since 2005, according to Packers.com.
- 2023 will be Gutekunst’s sixth NFL Draft as general manager. The Packers have twice had two first-round picks in the same draft since he took over – 2022 and 2019. The last time they had two picks in the first round in back-to-back drafts? 1977 (Nos. 9 and 28) and 1978 (Nos. 6 and 26).
- Speaking of the 1978 NFL Draft, Green Bay used the sixth overall selection in that draft on WR James Lofton. He is first in receiving yards (14,004) and second in receiving TDs (75) among players drafted by the Packers. Donald Driver (1999, 7th round) is second in receiving yards (10,137), and Davante Adams (2014, 2nd round) is first in receiving TDs (87).
- The Packers have only had a top-ten selection three times in the first round since the turn of the century (2001, 10th overall, DE Jamal Reynolds; 2005, 5th overall, LB AJ Hawk; 2009, 9th overall, DT BJ Raji).
- The Packers currently own the 15th overall selection. They have picked at No. 15 in the first round twice before. In 1979, they selected Georgia Tech running back Eddie Lee Ivery, who played eight seasons with the team. In 1993, they selected Clemson linebacker Wayne Simmons, who appeared in 64 games (47 starts) across four seasons with the team and was a member of the Super Bowl XXXI team.
- The Packers’ last three first-round picks spanning the last two drafts played at the University of Georgia. The Packers have never drafted a player in the first round from the same school in three consecutive drafts, but they did select a University of Minnesota football alum four times in a span of five years (1939-1940, 1942-1943).
- Since 2000, 10 of the team’s 23 first-round picks earned a second contract with the team, though that number could – and should – increase as it does not factor in the players currently on their rookie deals.
- Since 1970, 11 first-round selections by the Packers have played in 100+ games, led by Aaron Rodgers (230 games), and 10 first-round selections have played less than 40 games, according to Sports Illustrated’s Lombardi Ave.
- The Packers have drafted four players that went on to win at least one MVP award – Paul Hornung (1st overall, 1957), Jim Taylor (2nd round, 1958) Bart Starr (17th round, 1956), and Rodgers.
- While Love will be QB1 for the 2023 season, the team still needs to find a QB2. Will they draft one? Since the NFL went to a seven-round draft format in 1993, the Packers have drafted 14 quarterbacks, including 12 after Round 1. Among those 12, the most notable quarterbacks are Matt Flynn (2008, 7th round), Aaron Brooks (1999, 4th round), Matt Hasselback (1998, 6th round), and Mark Brunell (1993, 5th round).
- Several mock drafts have predicted that Green Bay will select an edge rusher in the first round. DE Erza Johnson recorded the most career sacks (96.0) among players drafted by the Packers. Johnson was selected with the 28th overall selection (1st round) in the 1977 NFL Draft and played 11 seasons in Green Bay. Clay Matthews is second (91.5).
- It is possible that the Packers will not bring back K Mason Crosby, the franchise’s all-time scoring leader. If they opt to draft his replacement, it would be only the fourth kicker drafted by the team since 1989 (Chris Jacke, 1989, 6th round; Brett Conway, 1997, 3rd round; and Crosby, 2007, 6th round).

Very interesting, Rex. These lessons bring back memories.
I kept saying: most games "but what about....?" oh yeah, Wolf traded for him.
most sacks "but what about...? oh yeah, free agent drafted by Philly.
