Seven XFL Players Who Make Sense For the Packers

The minor league is an important tool to evaluate players

The existence of football minor leagues is an important step for players to get new chances in the NFL. But it's also relevant for NFL front offices, who get more opportunities to scout players on the field. Last year, the Green Bay Packers signed multiple players from the USFL: TE Sal Cannella, WR Osirus Mitchell, WR Ishmael Hyman, S Micah Abernathy, RB Dexter Williams, and K Ramiz Ahmed.

While the second season of the USFL hasn't started yet, the XFL is going to the eighth week of the regular season — there are 10 weeks, plus two postseason weeks.
Let's take a look at XFL players who could help the Packers and try to make the 53-man roster.

QB AJ McCarron, St. Louis BattleHawks
When the Packers trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, it'll be imperative to add a backup quarterback. McCarron has extensive NFL experience, where he's played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans, and Atlanta Falcons. He decided to play in the XFL to allow his children to watch him on the field, but he certainly still has the ability to be in an NFL camp. He leads the XFL in touchdowns and TD:INT ratio, and is second in passing yards.

RB Abram Smith, DC Defenders
The former Baylor running back was undrafted last season and spent the training camp with the New Orleans Saints. He is still young, 24 years old. He leads the XFL in rushing yards, yards per run among players with at least 20 attempts, and scores. For the Defenders, he's had 654 yards in 121 runs and six touchdowns.

WR Hakeem Butler, St. Louis BattleHawks
Butler was a promising young player, but didn't live up to expectations in his first chances in the NFL. He spent just one season with the Arizona Cardinals after being drafted in the fourth round in 2019. Butler had smaller opportunities for the Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles (where he even tried a transition to tight end), and in the CFL. In the XFL, he's been a primary target for McCarron, and he's been able to apply his big body and physicality to generate production. He is tied for first in receiving touchdowns (5) and is fifth in receiving yards.

TE Sal Cannella, Arlington Renegades
Well, we know the Packers like Cannella because they signed him last preseason after he was a 1st-team All-USFL, and he was better than Tyler Davis in a small sample size. He didn't make the roster or the practice squad, though, and came back to the minor leagues. Now, he's again playing like an NFL tight end. He leads the XFL in receiving yards, targets, and receptions among tight ends — if we consider Cody Latimer as a wide receiver. Taking into consideration how thin the Packers depth is at the position, it makes sense to give Cannella another chance.

EDGE Trent Harris, Houston Roughnecks
Harris has played under Wade Phillips in a classic 3-4 scheme with the Houston Roughnecks, and he leads the XFL in sacks, with seven in six games. He's also tied for first in tackles for loss, which shows how frequently he's in the opposing backfield. Harris is 27 and has played in the NFL for the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, and Las Vegas Raiders.

S Sean Davis, Houston Roughnecks
Safety is arguably the most pressing need on the Packers roster, and Sean Davis has plenty of NFL experience. A former second-round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he's also played for Washington, the Indianapolis Colts, Cincinnati Bengals, and New England Patriots. After a year away from the NFL, he decided to give it another chance and signed with the Houston Roughnecks. He leads the league in interceptions among safeties, with three, and also has had 16 tackles.

K Dominik Eberle, Seattle Sea Dragons
Kicking is a difficult proposition, and sometimes players take time to develop. That might be Eberle's case. Born in Germany, the kicker spent some time with the Packers last offseason, but was released before training camp. He's played two NFL games, one for the Houston Texans in 2021 and one for the Detroit Lions last year, both as a replacement kicker, converting three out of four field goals and seven out of nine extra points. In the XFL for the Seattle Sea Dragons, Eberle has converted 12 field goals (1st in the league) in 13 attempts, including a 54-yarder. He has the best field goal percentage among qualified kickers. Right now, Parker White is the only kicker on the Packers roster, so it's inevitable the team will add another piece to create a competition if Mason Crosby doesn't re-sign.

Butler is an intriguing player. I haven't watched any of the XFL, but Butler is a big target. He could potentially be a fit to play a role similar to what Lazards role was in the offense. The mauler type.

Agreed!

Don't recall exactly when he came out (seems like just about 3 years ago), but I was really high on him and wanted the Pack to draft him.

How about the Packers sign good players rather than washouts from the minor leagues? What a novel concept?

Gutey will always keep his draft picks over undrafted free agents even if the latter perform better. Seems he prefers to compound an error in his drafting rather than fix it when he has the opportunity. Only to cut the draft pick a few years later. Just look at his 2018 draft class--only one player still on the roster. Not a good way to build a team. Those are the guys who should now be coming into their prime.

Canella not being brought back in the PS was a mild surprise to me, at least as a pass catching option. I don’t recall him showing much ability as a blocker. I’m wondering if there’s something that persuaded us to move on even when in season slots opened.

Butler, Davis and Harris would be worth a camp look on minimum contracts, but these guys are now on teams’ radars, so the one or two that really shine may get more than that.

Whether and what the chances are that any would break through is a good question. Few CFL players make it and by December last year, the only USFL players on an NFL roster were WR/KR KaVontae Turpin (Generals-Cowboys) and , technically, DE Chris Odom on preseason season ending Injured Reserve with Cleveland. Odom has bounced around the league for a while. There were 20 odd on practice squads, and that probably indicative of the most likely upside.

Would I say no to adding a couple for camp? No. Do I see any helping this year? The odds are strongly against it apparently.

You forgot about our own (well, not anymore) Abernathy, who was called up in December.

I like the out of the box thinking. Let’s see how they do in training camp. Sometimes players just need a chance and good coaching.

Butler was a stud in college @ Iowa State. 2018 was his senior year when he caught 60 balls for 1300 yrds. and 9 TDs. Thats 22 YPC boys. He also ran under 4.5 40 @ combine @ 6'5 225 lbs. I was surprised he lasted until the 4th round and drafted by Arizona. I was watching to see if Green Bay might grab him in the 3rd round. He broke his hand and got cut. They really didn't give him a chance. He is a bigger and faster version of Lazard and from the same school. You can't teach speed especially at that height.

In 2018 our awesome draft class included:
2nd round bust Josh Jackson
Traded up in 3rd for Oren Burkes (that was pretty shrewd)
Passed on Hakeem Butler-the WR in this article for 1 year wonder Jmon Moore in the 4th round
and wasted both 5th round picks on punter J K Scott, and OL Cole Madison.
Other than Jaire Alexander and Valdes Scantling that 11 pick draft was a total failure.

Maybe we would do better with XFL players, we sure don't draft that well.

I wouldn't just poo poo these guys because of where they are now playing. They are looking for second chances and Green Bay should be looking at everyone. With our salary cap issues we are currently shopping in the Bargain Basement.

Golf,
Thanks for doing the research on Butler. As I mentioned above, he was a stud in college and a player I was really high on. I would definitely think he is worth a look. Sometimes it takes awhile for these guys to mature & fill out.

I've watched a lot of the XFL this season and I agree with Wendell's analysis, especially McCarron. He will never be confused Tom Brady but he easily could be a veteran back up and I bet he will work cheap.

The rest, like Cannella, are a toss up. If they have NFL experience they will stand out during this level of play. But they aren't in the NFL for a variety of reasons. One exception could be the kicker Eberle. Kicking is kicking and you have to do essentially the same thing be it in the NFL, CFL, or lower level college ball. The goal posts and the distances stay roughly the same.

We need 90 bodies to start training camp. These 7 have been getting reps, experience and a chance to improve their craft. These 7 (or others) plus another bunch of UFDA's (plus the draft picks) will compete for the final 53 + practice squad. Give them a "go" and see where the chips fall. It can only raise the level of competition on the bottom.

That said, McCarron could function as a decent/cheap back-up qb and he does have experience in the Shanahan system. Eberle could be a "camp leg" and he does have (unlike the current kicker on the roster) recent game experience.

You can sign off people practice squads that are better then these guys. Bring them into camp but if you think you will find much you are fooling yourself.

Knock I am a Hawkeye fan too. Iowa State is a big rival we play every year. So I get to see their good players year after year. They are starting to get some players drafted again and they have a fabulous coach in Matt Campbell.

The NFL, even with their almighty wisdom isn't always right about which players can and can't play a certain position if they don't fit the cookie cutter mold. Arms have to be so long, hands so big, you have to be so fast to play a certain position, or if you don't play in a Pro Style offense you can't play QB. Thats bullshit. Hakeem Butler exceeded all of the WR prerequisites and he still didn't make it with a team. Maybe the Packers can right a wrong and benefit from it too.

Allen Lazard should have been drafted and this WR, Hakeem Butler could make our team, easily. He is talented, big and fast. Sometimes they fall through the cracks, the XFL will get some noticed again.

You are of course right that players fall through the cracks. Doug Flutie and Kurt Warner bring prime examples. However, it doesn’t happen all that often. In Butler’s case, he broke his hand almost immediately and missed his entire rookie season and then was cut despite being an early round 4 pick.

So why was he released? At the time, reports out of the Cardinals suggested that he was really raw (expected, he was a seen as a high ceiling low floor athlete) and struggling to master the route tree and showing inconsistent ability to gain separation in the short and intermediate areas of the field against press man coverage and a reluctance to be physical. Chris Simms described him as lumbering and very stiff out of breaks. He apparently dropped a lot of balls in camp too. Tony Pauline reported that the Cardinals were relieved that they could shunt him to IR, rather than have to cut a guy that they just picked at #103. That’s despite his straight line long speed.

The Eagles picked him up, tried to convert him to TE, he lasted a game or two followed by a one game stint in The CFL with one catch for 5 yards before being released. Now he’s back playing against lesser opposition and being the guy the Cardinals hoped for.

Yes, maybe it was bad luck with the injury or a question of effort or focus and willingness to learn, or maybe it’s just the level of competition being lower that is covering the flaws that soured the Cardinals and made the Eagles see him as of interest only as a TE.

Minimum contract candidate: low risk, high upside but significant questions. He will get another shot in a 90. How long that lasts is anyone’s guess.

Green Bay needs to turn over every rock for players especially because of lack of salary cap resources. We need weapons for Love to succeed and I am not saying Butler is a Pro Bowl WR. He is a guy with a lot of tools and potential and at least worth a shot. Definitely a minimum contract player with potential. Drops were a negative, he was physical and actually ran over a lot of D-Backs in college as evidenced by his production. I always look at WRs that have big YPC and Butlers was huge at 22 YPC. Butler reminds me of Darrin Waller, Raider TE.

Its very eerie how much Butlers measurables and early career path mimics Lazards to this point. When Lazard ran his slower combine 40 time, with his size I envisioned Green Bay drafting him and making him a TE. I was bummed when we didn't pick him but happy when we claimed him later. Butler was actually drafted but had his issues and the injury that ended his time with Arizona. Bottom line is Butler has formidable skills and Green Bay has a need for WR and TE. Green Bay also has limited money and Butler would be cheap. Maybe we get lucky and hit a home run.

Coincidently, Iowa State has a WR prospect in Xavier Hutchinson who would fit Green Bays WR need really nicely and we wouldn't have to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on him. He is a really skilled route runner and unlike Butler, Hutchinson catches everything. He had bigtime production @ Iowa State while always targeted as their #1 receiving threat. He reminds me a lot of Devonte Adams when he came out of college. Same size, speed, and huge stats. We need to trade back with #15 and then use our first picks on more important positions of need. TE and Edge. The extra picks would then let us get our S, WR and D-line picks early.

Some potential good rumors floating around that San Francisco might be a player for Rodgers. That could push the Jets to offer more and get this trade done. Lack of competition for Rodgers has been hurting us.
