Seattle Signs Flynn To Three Year Deal

Seattle Signs Flynn To Three Year Deal

Per Adam Schefter:

Matt Flynn has agreed to terms with Seattle on a 3-yr contract worth up to $26M w/$10M guaranteed.

In the end it seems Flynn was impressed with the urgency displayed by the Seahawks. This would also seem to leave former Packers offensive coordinator and current Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin on the outside looking in when it comes to teams adding new quarterbacks this offseason, having now watched his new team miss out on both Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn.

Apparently Seattle Seahawk coach Pete Carroll plans to have Flynn compete with last years starter  Travaris Jackson, proving once again that Carroll has a wicked sense of humor.

I really thought Flynn would end up with Philbin in Miami. That's too bad. How blessed we are as Packers fans not to have some crazy owner who only cares about selling jerseys and filling seats. Miami could have been set for the future with a young star. Instead they chased the Manning dream and lost. Good luck down there Joe.

Reportedly the Dolphins low balled Flynn because they thought he would take just about whatever to play for Philbin. Dumb choice I guess.

aussiepacker's picture

Is that a big enough contract to get us a 3rd round comp pic, If we dont sign any big name free agents?

From what I understand, comp picks are determined by taking a player's base salary (no bonuses/incentives) and adjusting it based on playing time and postseason honors. If Matt Flynn is the full time starter and leads the Seahawks to multiple NFC Championship losses, we may get a good pick.

Jeremy's picture

If Matt Flynn manages to loose multiple NFC Championships next year the Packers should get every pick in the 2013 draft. ; )

packsmack25's picture

We only get a pick next season. No "multiple" anything factors in.

BrianD's picture

Ah, I was wondering how many years factored into the compensatory pick. I'm glad to know the NFL is so shortsighted.

jeremy's picture

I don't think it's shortsightedness. Teams don't want to wait more than one season to get their pick.

Don Hutson's picture

It's shortsighted for the NFL not to be long sighted. Why don't they realize how many Packer fans are frustrated that we didn't get two first-round picks for Flynn we deserved?

We here at this blog are the Sampsons of genius. If we ran the Packers we'd make sure the walls of Lambeau would come tumblin down

Good... Can't wait to see the Hawks with Flynn as their starter host us next year.

If anybody else is going to that game, lemme know, I'll let you buy me a beer!

Doug In Sandpoint's picture

I'm sure I'll be there. I'll start saving my money. I bet you can put them away.

djbonney138's picture

I may make it also. Depends on the time of year. My main priority is another trip to Lambeau but I may be able to slip in a short trip to Seattle.

djbonney138's picture

P.S. I will bring beer money.

FITZCORE1252's EVO's picture

Sounds good guys! Wish the schedule was out... Another month.

markinmontana's picture

I might make it- waiting for the schedule to come out and to see if a friend from Seattle wants to go with.

jbovegas73's picture

This about sealed my decision on which away game to go to ... I try to go to one away & one home game a year. Next season (as in 2013; barring Armageddon), I'm hoping for a London game! GO PACK GO!

The phins are screwed. Tannehill will be gone at #4 and they'll be left with Matt Moore, who isn't horrible or Alex Smith who won't ever become the qb Matt Flynn will. On top of that philbin is set up for a 3-4 and switches to a 4-3 for some reason. I give it two years before they can him.

Anthony's picture

Don't think there will be ANY options next offseason if this year is bad for the Fins? Regardless of if they do horrible or not, Philbin will be back. And if they do horrible, you can be sure they will pick up a good FA QB or one of the best QB's in next years' draft. Don't sleep on Matt Moore, though. He could be a sleeper.

markinmadison's picture

Low-balled Flynn and they are now screwed. I think if the Packers had the rights to Flynn this may have been a rare win/win in tagging. Reality will sink in on the Dolphins soon enough. -

pkrNboro's picture

Don't know if I've ever thought much of Pete Carroll, but if he's planning "competition" then he's really shooting himself/his-team in the foot. Is that Pete trying to instill a "collegiate" atmosphere?

T-a-r-v-a-r-i-s is a backup, at best -- 6 years in the league, and a 77.7 rating. Why would you rob snaps from Flynn when he's in a new offense, with new teammates?

bryce's picture

Good point, well stated.

redlights's picture

Yeah, Philbin has a problem in Miami. Wow.

Have you seen Seattle's WR's? 2 2nd year players and then nobodies. Maybe they'd like J. Jones, so we bring Driver down to minimum and let him retire as a Packer, while still getting the youngsters some playing time.

Anthony's picture

Don't think so. Seahawks do have a bunch of underrated but talented, hungry, young guys on their team. I think that team's potential is through the roof with Flynn.

FITZCORE1252's EVO's picture

Holmgren, Hasslebeck, Schneider, Flynn... Seattle = the Packers stalker.

Al's picture

didnt they grab up all our no good lineman too? mole, giacomini, cole, and barbe?

dat der Packer-backer's picture

I literally laughed out loud when I saw Giacomini on the field during one of Seattle's televised games. Followed by "Wait, seriously?"

Chris's picture

That may be a tough season for Flynn if he cannot beat T. Jackson for the starting job. Of course he will get one big paycheck now, but that will be it for him and he will be a backup for the rest of his career.

lars's picture

Umm, no. I doubt Seattle gave Flynn some decent $$$ to compete with a never-was like jackson. Matt will be the starter and Jackson will be back where he belongs.

Had Jackson been a viable starter the Seahawks wouldn't have had to sign Flynn.

For those thinking Miami, remember they still have Matt Moore, who is a far-sight better than what Seattle has. Cleveland, as usual, remains clueless.

bryce's picture

Good luck Matt. May your career arc match the last backup QB named Matt that left GB for Seattle.

dawg's picture

Matt's a competitor, depends on his cast around him.
