Kumerow not so surprising, hasn't done much "trust" or no. The Pack bringing in multiple FA WR tells me the final WR likely not on the roster.
Tim Williams- THAT is a surprise. Thought they liked him as the #4 OLB.
Dexter, Guess they re hoping he makes it through to the PS.

Kumerow is what he is.......They will only keep 5 WR, thankfully they cut Shepperd too...

I’m not thankful. Young player who stood out again. Likely PS member. Looks like Malik Turner is gone too.

September 05, 2020 at 09:17 am
Now I'm wondering... I had Ervin making it as the 4th RB / quasi 6th WR. Could they go with only 4 true WR now with Ervin as the 5th and actually utilize TE's and RB's more in the passing game??

That would seem to be part of MLF,s DNA.

that is possible Jersey Al, I still think they keep a 5th, my bet Malik Turner...but it would not shock me

I did get suspicious when they brought in a couple of WR for a look the other day. That sent up a red flag for Kumerow's WR% spot, but I talked myself into figuring it was just the Packers doing their usual due diligence - always looking...

I would opine that the plan is to throw to the RBs and TEs and Adams. The other WRs are blockers or decoys on 90% of the snaps. They all are big and cheap and are functionally FBs.....a few touches, but mostly they’re on the field to block.
HankScorpio
September 05, 2020 at 09:49 am
"They all are .... functionally FBs"
I lol'ed. We clearly have different ideas of the function of a FB.
Bure9620
September 05, 2020 at 09:50 am
They block.......so do WRs
Leatherhead
September 05, 2020 at 10:07 am
Exactly, Bure.
Yeah, William Henderson got touches, but mostly he was blocking. A good block from a WR can make the difference between a good run and a great one.
Coldworld
September 05, 2020 at 10:15 am
Somewhat of a difference between WR blocking and what one expects of a FB or even a TE
Leatherhead
September 05, 2020 at 11:13 am
Yeah. We’re expecting our WR to block a smaller, lighter dude so that if our RB gets to the secondary he has a better chance of a long run.
He’s not being asked to plow through linebackers.
But, his primary function, just like the FBs of yesteryear, is mostly as a blocker. Yes, he’ll get some targets but mostly he tries to create holes for others.
HankScorpio
September 05, 2020 at 10:35 am
"They block.......so do WRs"
If the Packers can extend Bakhtiari for FB money, that distinction will make sense.
Bure9620
September 05, 2020 at 10:45 am
Well that would be comparing pass blocking to run blocking which hardly makes any sense.........hardly the same technique....WRs are blocking DBs in the run game and the screen game. So are FBs and HBs, they are also chipping rushers....We are not suggesting EQ is having to master a kick step to seal off an edge rusher the way a Tackle would......that is a ridiculous comparison and demonstrates your lack of knowledge of the game....blocking and tackling are the two most undervalued pieces for fans, they simply don't understand it, or leverage
HankScorpio
September 05, 2020 at 11:10 am
Yes, that would be like comparing pass blocking to run blocking, wouldn't it? We don't see many WRs making pass blocking sets, do we? But we do see that from FBs, don't we?
And now you get why I lol'ed at the notion that WRs are functionally like FBs. It only took making an equally ridiculous comparison in the other direction.
Leatherhead
September 05, 2020 at 11:26 am
That’s really weak logic.
FBs, on run plays, were lead blockers.
On passes, they picked up blitzes and/or released into the open. Occasionally, they caught a ball. Henderson had over 50 one year, if I recall.
Lazard, for example, is a blocker on runs. On pass plays, he’s a decoy/downfield blocker. If we throw 35 passes in a game, 10 will go to Adams. He’s our best, highest paid WR. Next, our RBs will get thrown to about 10 times per game. Then about another 8-10 to the TE.
What is left goes to Lazard/MSV/EQ. That’s about 5-8 total targets for the group.
Functionally, they’re fullbacks.

My initial 53 had 4 WR to allow for a space until the Packers put Kamal Martin on IR, but I was guessing that they'd bring back a 5th WR. I didn't see other teams picking up more than 4 of our WRs. But you raise a good point: conceivably the Packers could go with 4 WR for some games with all the TEs and RBs that are receiving options.
And, like you, I had 10 OL. I kinda think the Packers will go with 6 CBs; I think they'll go with the 5 you list plus someone else, unless they're not excited about a 6th guy or feel real good about Redmond at CB if needed.

I've been expecting this all along on offense. I even think we could still see Marcades cut if the blocking job can be filled by committee (Dillon and Dequara could take on that role and still be good dump down receivers).
I have also thought they would do so on D as well, keeping the best athletes regardless of position for the DL and LB positions (many of those guys move around a lot already and size ratios are becoming as obsolete in the NFL as the NBA).
Still not sure how this all shakes out yet, but most of my dream cuts are coming true and I do think they are putting together a talented roster that is closer to my projections than any fan sites' projections.

Reports are the Malik Taylor is safe. Surprise, surprise, surprise.
Gute said they liked him a lot some time ago. Makes one wonder if TC has any value.
Stroh
September 05, 2020 at 10:40 pm
Of course they'll use TE and RB more in the passing game. Why would you have thought otherwise? LaFleur offense is RB and TE centric.
Ive been Been saying all offseason they would only keep 5 WR for that very reason, r is too few. Just need the TE to step to the plate.

I'm sure they'd like another WR with 4.4 type speed. They might be more interested in keeping Lovett too.

Aaand Lovett's cut. :-D
Coldworld
September 05, 2020 at 12:27 pm
Malik Taylor has that. Don’t think he makes it though.
Post script. Apparently he has made it!
“At his pro day, Taylor ran the 40-yard dash in under 4.5 seconds, hit 36″ in the vertical and 10-6 in the broad jump, did 11 reps on the bench press and finished the three-cone drill in 6.81 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.02.” USAtoday. He has an 8.32 RAS score.
A D2 player, Ferris State, who missed almost all of his last year with a hamstring injury. Per http://si.com “”We really like Malik Taylor,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said after not selecting a receiver in this year’s draft.”
Athleticism aplenty, hints from Gute and he was tipped for a spot a couple of days ago by the JournalSentinel, yet nowhere near the attention as Shepherd from those that I read in terms of performance in camp. Perhaps everyone overlooked him?
Provides another perimeter type. Seems they preferred him to Bagelton and Shepherd, which may mean Ervin is a real slot option and went for outside depth.
murf7777
September 05, 2020 at 01:03 pm
Draft scout shows him at 4.46 with a low of 4.36 and a high of 4.56. I didn’t see 4.36 on his highlight reel, but 4.46 is certainly fast enough, especially with his athleticism. Good luck young man you have beaten the odds big time!
Coldworld
September 05, 2020 at 02:41 pm
I saw the 4.3 time, took it out because it’s a huge variance and others had numbers much close to 4.4. I have seen other reference to the 4.3s but I’m not sure how official, also a reference to a poor start on the slow run. Like you, I thought 4.4 seemed enough to make the point.

September 05, 2020 at 01:04 pm
They've said good things, and he's shown better in camp this year. Remember that he essentially lost his whole senior year of college to injury, and likely didn't have the pro-day prep that others would've had. Someone in the pipeline...

September 05, 2020 at 09:36 am
Interestingly, these first cuts are almost all guys I thought would go to the PS...

Bure9620
September 05, 2020 at 09:43 am
I am a bit surprised to see Stanford Samuels cut....he seemed to have a strong camp, beat out by Hollman?
Coldworld
September 05, 2020 at 10:22 am
PS material? Less experience in the system. Could be an example where the difference was the lack of a normal preseason. Hollman looked as good last year as Samuels has shown this year though.
As to the order, maybe Gute likes to get the ones he wants back in early and sell the PS opportunity. It makes some sense. May be some moves to IR coming tomorrow, such as Martin opening a roster spot immediately.
Leatherhead
September 05, 2020 at 11:16 am
If the plan is to put Samuel on the PS, then it’s smarter to cut him now.
Archie
September 05, 2020 at 09:38 am
Yes, I'm guessing Lovett has made the team.
4 RB
4 WR
4 TE
1 Gadget/RTN MAN
3 QB
9 OL
Only question - who will be RT and who will be swing tackle?
JerseyAl
September 05, 2020 at 09:40 am

September 05, 2020 at 09:51 am
I'm guessing 10 OL for week 1.

September 05, 2020 at 01:19 pm
So far it looks OL heavy...Nijman, Hanson, Runyan, Wagner, Turner, Taylor, Linsley, Jenkins, Bakhtiari, Light, Patrick...that's 11.
In Edit: by my count, this is with 6 cuts to go.

September 05, 2020 at 09:58 am
I'm just hoping most teams wanna keep their own guys on the expanded practice squad and dont do a lot of poaching from other teams.
Would like to see Galeai, Samuels, both Williams, and Lovett back on GB PS. Guess we'll have to wait and see who makes it through waivers and if any jump ship to other PS's.
HankScorpio
September 05, 2020 at 10:03 am
It's not at all surprising that the garbage they brought to camp at WR is getting push to the wayside. I remain convinced that the weakness of the position will prove an achilles heel.
I hope I'm wrong.
NJMagic
September 05, 2020 at 10:06 am
They are still looking strongly at the position...
Seems BG agreed with you that #5 WR isn't on the roster
Coldworld
September 05, 2020 at 10:28 am
Kumerow didn’t have a great camp, is older and couldn’t get meaningful time last year when it was there for grabs. Bagelton has had no games, Shepherd is a novice, Turner perhaps, but none stood out except Shepherd, and he will likely make a PS if asked. It maybe that they really see Ervin in the slot. Expect Shepherd and Bagelton, maybe Turner to get PS invites. Not sure we get a WR in unless they doubt EQ, in which case, likely a vet with more quickness than Kumerow.
murf7777
September 05, 2020 at 03:34 pm
That would be awesome if they feel so good about Ervin that he could get serious playing time in the slot. I really like what he did last year. We need that quick player type that he shied last year.
PeteK
September 05, 2020 at 04:04 pm
The Begelton experiment is over. I had interest in his ability. Kumerow's invisible last season spelled doom for him, but he did have some value on special team. His cut hopefully spells WR improvement.
Leatherhead
September 05, 2020 at 11:31 am
Sure he is . Swervin Ervin is our #5 WR, and he’ll be our returner. He’ll also run some jet sweeps out of the slot.
Adams, Lazard, MVS, EQ, Ervin.

September 05, 2020 at 01:18 pm
We need to think "pass-catchers" not just WR.
Leatherhead
September 05, 2020 at 07:00 pm
Yup. You have 5 skill position players to help the QB move the ball and score points.
Adams and Jones, obviously, are pretty good. They were our two leading receivers last year. Jones and Williams, combined had over 90 receptions. And now you add Dillon. Between Adams and the RBs, that’s where the ball is going to go over 60% of the time. The other 20 plays are divided up among everybody else. That’s our offense.
PeteK
September 05, 2020 at 04:12 pm
Swervin Ervin!!! hahaha love it!!! I think we will see him in the slot often.

I suspect that they will use the expanded PS x6 potentially for Kumerow.
Lovett is a backup of our new TE gets injured. I thought he might have a chance because the role is so integral to the system. They are likely praying for PS - but we poached him, would not be shocked if someone poached him back.

September 05, 2020 at 06:18 pm
Does Kumerow have any Practice squad eligibility left?
I haven’t kept up on eligibility rules, but he’s been in the league for many years, was on PS’s most of his career, and has made active roster two years now, if I’m not mistaken?
I think he might be ineligible. Can anyone clarify?
JerseyAl

this year, EVERYONE is eligible.

Covid-19 provision. Got it.
Thanks for clarification, Al.
I see that up to 4 players per week can be "protected" from being poached from the PS as well. I'm surprised the PA allowed that to go through. If Vets can be placed on PS, AND they can be protected from being picked up by another team in need.. I'd imagine there could be some really unhappy veteran players.

Every time I get the two anonymous down votes on posts that there's literally nothing that makes sense to down vote, I cry a little bit inside because I feel empathy for the two grown men that are so emotionally fragile they feel the need to continually down-rate my posts because I said something at some point in time that hurt them so deeply they feel the need for "revenge voting". Lol.. It's so pathetic. What can I do to help make the hurt go away?

September 05, 2020 at 10:10 am
Forgot to mention- there are at least two players going on IR tomorrow, so would expect 2 players back on the 53 (if they clear).
I'm going to be looking at which skill position is REALLY short (WR? ILB? OLB?) or someone who seems to be a key backup (Lovett?)
Coldworld
September 05, 2020 at 11:15 am
Maybe one where they think the person cut is least likely to be picked up. I doubt OLB. Could be CB, WR if internal, ILB, OT (Veldheer) or DL if outside and perhaps a vet WR, though I think less likely than some seem to.
That said, Gute has been more willing than most to scour the street for anyone that he believes will be an upgrade at any position. Could be an early cut from the roster as well if the right guy falls.
SpikeHyzer
September 05, 2020 at 12:30 pm

Al, thanks for the info on the expanded squad. I've been asking around here and other sites if the rules had changed beyond simply expanding it.
It's a weird adjustment to see that the 6 additional also don't have an experience limit (which was something like being active for 6 games or more in the first season, or 9 or more across the first two seasons).
I now see that we may be able to keep some guys on the PS who should not be eligible (Dexter and Darius among them I think).
I think the age of COVID might just make guys want to stick with the teams that brungem as well.

Hey Al,
Thanks for the info. I'm probably like most Packer fans and did pull for Kumerow, but I do understand the logic in letting him go.
However, the one guy that was cut that I hoped would make the 53 is Lovett. I like everything I've read about him and think he would be excellent in the locker room and a contributor on the field in this offense. I also like his potential for the special teams units. A smart player who will get the most out of his natural ability.
Stroh
September 05, 2020 at 02:22 pm
I, unlike most Packer fans, didn't get all giddy about a UW-W player ever being much of an NFL player. He had been cut by 3 or 4 other teams prior to the Packers, been on PS squads and hadn't developed into a viable NFL WR after all of that and by the age of 27 or 28. I mean really, what was the point. At that point, he was what he was and wasn't getting better.
