"Rookie Symposium" Available To Packers Draft Choices

Derek Sherrod, Randall Cobb and the rest of the Packers draft choices can attend an alternative to the Rookie Symposium.

Derek Sherrod, Randall Cobb and the rest of the Green Bay Packers 2011 NFL Draft choices will have the opportunity to attend an event intended to simulate the Rookie Symposium, which was recently cancelled by the NFL due to the lockout.

The former NFL Players Association is hosting an event called "The Business of Football: Rookie Edition" from June 28 to 29 in Washington D.C.

According to Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated:

The event, which will be open to all players picked in the 2011 NFL Draft, will focus on financial planning, personal security, dealing with the media, and how to be a professional on and off the field.

Current and former players as well as experts in their field are being invited to address the rookies. The Players Association is covering the cost of the voluntary event including travel and lodging.

Sounds OK. However, I wish they would just get a deal done.

I’m curious about this whole “I’m a union, no wait, it’s not working so now I’m a trade association” thing. Can you actually spend money that was raised as a union if you are no longer a union? And if in being a union, you are unsuccessful being a union so you have to revert to being a trade association what’s the point in being a union?
I wonder if any of the current players want the union, I mean association, to spend money on rookies when they could give them the money when they start to need it?
