Right Tackle Issue Growing...

I characterized the lack of an obvious starting right tackle as the 'silent problem' back in early February. Well, that problem is starting to make a tiny bit of noise. From Pro Football Weekly's 'Whispers' section comes the following:

With the Packers thinking Mark Tauscher probably won’t be ready to play again until the 2009 halfway point following his mid-January knee surgery, team sources tell us the free-agent tackle remains a long shot to be re-signed. As for the top candidate to possibly replace Tauscher as the starting right tackle, we hear it probably no longer is second-year pro Breno Giacomini, who is expected to miss a substantial portion of the team’s offseason program after undergoing arthroscopic ankle surgery Feb. 11. Word is the most likely scenario could be moving either Daryn Colledge, the starting left guard last season, or second-year pro Josh Sitton outside.

That last sentence should scare the bejeebus out of any Packer fan.

I don't know, I always thought that Colledge would make a better tackle than guard. He probably won't be as solid a RT as Tauscher, but he might be OK. We'll see.

Did you miss his stint against the Lions before he left with an injury? Not pretty - and against the Lions? Yikes.

I guess we know why Oher is the focus of the #9 selection. We all know how well rookie O Linemen slip into the starting lineup. If the great, " I never saw the field" Bruno needed surgery, can someone please explain why they waited til Feb. 11th? My God fire the medical staff now. Hell, they fired the trainer didn't they?

I am seeing a significant lack of strategy this whole off-season. And I know exactly where the buck stops. As you said Aaron, you recognized this issue long ago. Why didn't they?

It doesn't seem like a lot of teams are overly interested in Tauscher, why not sign him as an insurance policy with an incentive-laden deal.?
And wasn't Colledge the best guard on the team last year? Why move him?

Well Ron, to be fair, free agency isn't over and the draft happens next month. But if training camp starts and the Packers are still at the same point personnel wise, I will start to get concerned...

Aaron, it's your site so you have to be the calm, cool, measured professional here. I, on the other hand, can be the wild eyed, frothing at the mouth, commenter. And enjoying it!

Dont discount the Lions ends last year. If there was one bright spot on that team they were it. The first game they had their way as well, when Colledge was playing at guard. Give him a full camp to get ready to play tackle, and do it next to someone who is also ready to play guard.
