Report: Packers to kick off 2019 NFL season in Chicago

The league's oldest rivalry will reportedly kick off the NFL's 100th season.

Recent tradition has held that the NFL opens its season with the reigning Super Bowl champion playing at home in a primetime Thursday night game.

That could apparently change this year with the league set to celebrate it's 100th season.

That would be a tough draw for rookie head coach Matt LaFleur, but I have to admit, I love the idea of the league's oldest rivalry kicking off a big anniversary season for the NFL.

I hope the Packers CHANGE which throwbacks they wear this season. IIRC they haven't fared very well in these last three years. New Coach, new system, new throwbacks!

I was hoping for a softer opponent at home to kickoff the season . A tune up game to help get out of preseason mode as Rodgers hardly plays in the preseason games. Need to get in sync in a live environment and there's nothing better than a tomato can opponent at home to shake off the cobwebs.

Oh well, NFL 100 years, at Chicago it is. Go Pack!

Not sure what a “tomato can opponent” is after 6-9-1.
Also, it will be interesting to see how MLF structures his preseason usage of 12 and other starters on offense. More preseason game action to acclimate to a new system?

I'm hoping that changes under MLF at least in year 1Dan. Rodgers will need to get game reps this pre-season and more than the 3 or 4 series he had last season (or whatever it was)….He'll need the work.

He will need the work getting the young receivers playing optimally. Should make the preseason much more interesting than usual.

I’d like to see an end to the “Rodgers hardly plays in the preseason games.” Waiting through a quarter of the season for him, and the offense a a whole to get in sync has to stop. McCarthy’s gone. I hope what’s back is performance expectations and accountability. Go Pack!

Given the how bad the Packers looked last year other teams probably view GB as the "tomato can'

With all the changes in players and coaches, it’s a new team playing an old rival. GPG!

I love this for a few reasons:

1. The field in Chicago is shit. I don't want Packers players getting hurt on that awful field when the grass is dead.

2. The Bears won the NFCN in 2018. Knock 'em off their perches early.

3. For once, the league gets something right. Bears/Packers is the best rivalry in sports. Celebrate 100 years the right way.

4. 10 days off after going 1-0 is a great way to start the year.

5. Watching Chicago's "everything went right" season come crashing down early in 2019 will be sweet. Bears fans don't yet understand the probabilities of turnover regression, dominant defense regression, close wins regression and injury regression. But they will. Oh, they will.

The “tomato can” game will be when the Packers play themselves on Family Night.

I think this is a perfect kind of game for us to come out and set the tone for the NEW Packers regime.

I hope we play hungry, play pissed off, have that chip on the shoulder, and really kick ass. Rodgers is GREAT when he's got that chip.

I hope our front 7 starts to leave snot bubbles in QB's noses while our secondary become hawks...

I have a good feeling about this!

Sounds like a good test for the OL coach right at the start of the season.

After knowing the Packers offense almost as much as the Packers offensive players did the last few years, the Bears defense will now be having to figure out things on the fly this game. And without Vic Fangio around to help.

Should be an interesting game.

GB vs Chicago...Packers will be hoping that Rodgers comes through the game healthy and show signs he is going to have a better season playing QB than last season when he threw passes out of bounds on third downs at an alarming rate for a veteran QB.

If Rodgers is unable to improve his play next season the Packers will find themselves out of the playoffs for the third consecutive season and in dire straights going forward with his huge contract becoming an insurmountable burden for this Packer organization.

I vote we hold Aaron Jones out of this game.

2 years he has been in the league he has sustained knee sprains both times playing in Chicago. I say keep him out so that we can have him for the other 15 games.
