Report: Packers to interview Buccaneers OC Todd Monken for vacant HC position

-- A seventh candidate between Friday and Sunday has been added to the Green Bay Packers' list for their vacant head coach position.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken will interview with the team Saturday night for the job, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

The Packers have two other meetings on the table for Saturday, and both reside in the NFC South as well. They're scheduled to interview New Orleans Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.

On Sunday, they'll speak with former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase and Tennesee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur.

For Monken, 52, who has never been a head coach at the NFL level, hiring him would be a lateral move since he's going from an offensive coordinator position to directly being a head coach.

Monken coached at the collegiate level for 18 seasons, first stepping onto the scene in 1989 as an assistant at Grand Valley State. He spent the better part of the next two decades with Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, Louisiana Tech, Oklahoma State and Louisiana State.

He specialized in coaching the offensive side of the ball, which would highly benefit the Packers, who struggled sporadically on offense in 2018.

Monken does have NFL experience under his belt, however. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receivers coach from 2007-2010 before finding his way to Tampa Bay in 2016, splitting time between being the team's offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

He spent time in-between his two NFL jobs as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and the head coach at Southern Mississippi for three seasons.

The Packers have already interviewed New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Brian Flores on Friday. They completed interviews with former coaches, Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano last week.

He's the guy that made "Fitz Magic" look like Connor McGregor. The Bucs offense has been explosive when the gears were clicking.

Fitz Magic has looked periodically awesome and hideous throughout his whole career. The Bucs had a lot of yards this year and not many points.

no thanks.

"The Bucs had a lot of yards this year and not many points."

Monken helped guide the Buccaneers to top 10 finishes in offense each of the last two seasons. They were third in the league in yards in 2018 thanks largely to a passing offense that led the league in total yardage. Even with Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick doing the passing for the Buccaneers, Tampa Bay still finished third in the league in passing touchdowns.

Funny how one judges another person based on a photo. I didn't know who the hell he is or what he looked like. I see this picture of him with an ugly scowl wearing sunglasses and I immediately think Maclean Stevenson of MASH or as the other guy said "the grinch". I see your photo of him and yes, he doesn't look at all like Maclean Stevenson but definitely looks a lot like a skinny Bill Belichich. Had they shown a photo of the one you had it would have changed my entire perception of him. I know nothing about the man regardless so still sticking with my two guys Ryan/Pettine to take us to the promised land.

fastmoving, I'll have you know that John Kirk, one of the most highly respected sports journalists here or elsewhere for that matter just endorsed my choice for head coach in Rex Ryan. I'll take his endorsement over 10 people like you who only replied to me because of your severe TDS you have. You can't go more than a few hours here without having to rip into you know who. Get some help. Your health is more important to me than who we pick as our head coach.

That has to be one of the funniest things I have read in quite some time. It was a satirical comedy masterpiece. You name drop John Kirk (!!) for validation on your Rex Ryan theory (!!) in the same post you dive into someone else's pathology.

As Kenny Bania might say, That's GOLD, Jerry!!!

This isn't a "theory" like Old School about Philbin. This is a "who I would want to be head coach if I had the choice" deal. I know it probably won't happen but that's who I want. I asked John Kirk about Ryan because he's clearly the top guy here in regards to his knowledge. There's many others here I also highly respect but Kirk is no. 1. It's not even a question at this point. He brought up Ryan positively in a post (only guy other than me to do so) so I asked him about him. He simply said that he also thought Ryan would be a great pick but it also wouldn't happen because of Murphy. That means something when it comes from someone like Kirk who has said numerous times he was a sports journalist in the past which I believe. Fastmoving is a deranged left wing nut similar to Crazy Joe Davola who is still freaking out at the mere mention of the "T" word. Nuts like Fastmoving and what they say carry no weight with me. They are what they are.

As JS so aptly noted, he made Fitzmagic look like a HOF quarterback. We don't have DeSean Jackson, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, but...

We could get DeSean...

Draft an Evans...we already have our Godwin.

He goes right to the top of the guys, from this shallow candidate pool, I would be good with.

Just how much, if any, of this search is legit and not dog-and-pony?

The Monkey Man would be interesting. That O soared in Tampa. Had no legit running game and still finished 3rd in the NFL total offense rotating QBs in and out.

I think there's plenty of smoke surrounding the idea that McDaniels didn't go well and the Packers immediately moved to interview Gase and Monken. Could also be trying to lower McDaniels price as he was the only legit offensive mind on their list before these two guys.

Our offense could be "Monken" awesome!

Having not seen anything about the McDaniels interview, I was skeptical that the Packers would cede the kind of control he might want (based on Denver). As you say: this might be the result.

If I'm Josh McDaniels coming from the Pats org, there's no I can work for a guy like Magic Mark who decided to become a micro-manager after years of absentee landlordism.

Ironically, that's what Josh McDaniels has a rep for...micro-managing.

I'd pay to know exactly what McDaniels thought of Murphy.

I think that that is a somewhat a dumb comment. I dont know why people want to call him Magic Mike - dont think that he is a male stripper- but in any case - he is what we have and has done a good job so far And until the last 2 years of TT's existence the Pack was noted for making good decisions both in the draft, salary cap and in free agency areas. Now we all know that the Pack has lost a lot of mgmt personnel into the various teams in the league - from Seattle to KC to Oakland now into Cleveland. One cannot keep on having braindrain without it effecting you. TT may have received the credit for the draft picks but what about the people digging these guys out of the weeds and helping TT evaluate? Because while TT may have made a lot of mistakes at the top level - I would suggest Brohm, Harrell etc are big time mistakes, his successes were more of the undrafted free agents and lower guys and some of his trades - CM3 - and those things sometimes should be awarded to the scouts in the field.

There were two guys who were pretty good OC that year in both MM and SP ==== but if you look at MM - why would they hire a guy away from San Fran whose team ranked 30thI I hope we dont go and try to emulate that

"""In 2005, McCarthy served as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. His unit, beset by injuries[citation needed] and led by a rookie quarterback (top draft pick Alex Smith), finished the season ranked 30th in the NFL in points scored and dead last in yards gained.""""

I agree! Interview as many candidates as you can. Murphy finally has something to do. There's no harm in casting a wide net. Some people flip out when they interview someone they either haven't heard of or don't want as the new coach. The same people would flip out if they only interviewed three candidates before making a hire. Trust the process.

The Green Bay Packers cannot have a head coach named Todd. Unless he has a truly hardazz nickname, it's not gonna work.

The same rule applies for Josh, and most certainly for Dirk. All three names violate the laws of nature for head football coaches.

I know everyone wants a pass rusher for 1st pick.

But, I think we should take best player on the board this year. No matter who it is. We are in rebuild.

Preferably I would like an OL to help fix the right side.

BPA is a cop out. The NFL draft is a crap shoot. Who do you draft if an OL and a Passrusher are both on the top of your board when your pick comes up? I go with the pass rusher because they're harder to find later on in the draft and can contribute faster typically than OL. Each have their exceptions of course but that's the general rule. We're not rebuilding we're reloading.

I have watched Monken from afar for years and his offense was very explosive last year. His most impressive accomplishment imo was turning around Southern Miss. I lived in New Orleans when Southern Miss was 0-12 and 1-11 in C-USA. I Went to a couple games, they lost to Boise by about 60 I remember. That program was a complete dumpster fire. No talent, the cubbard was BARE. They were just awful, did not even look close to a D-1 program. Monken turned that program around quickly. Making that team competitive again and actually putting them in a bowl game in couple years and having a winning record was nothing short of miraculous. We could do a lot worse than Monken.
