Report: Packers DL Letroy Guion Practice for First Time at Training Camp

Practice is currently unfolding, but the word from Green Bay is that defensive lineman Letroy Guion is practicing for the first time since training camp opened:

Guion was originally placed on the team's Non-Football Injury (NFI) list with a hamstring pull on the eve of training camp, reportedly injured while working out on his own during the offseason.

The return of Guion couldn't have come at a better time after it was recently learned fellow defensive lineman B.J. Raji would be lost for the season with a torn biceps.

Without Raji, the Packers were in need of depth on the defensive line at the very least, and Guion will join a group including Josh Boyd and Mike Pennel trying to replace him at nose tackle.

If reports are indeed accurate, Guion taking part in practice would also make him inelgible for the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to open the season. He'll necessarily be carried on the 53-man roster or be cut.

Guion was running out of time if he was going to be ready for the regular-season opener in Seattle from both a mental and physical standpoint.

Assuming there are no setbacks, there would appear to be enough time for Guion to return to action for the Packers' preseason finale on Thursday against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

Even after the Raji injury I thought Guion would go on regular season pup but if hes ready, hes ready no sense in delaying his debut any longer.

Really happy to hear that Carl Bradford finally got some snaps at ILB even though its a bit late in the process, its worth getting a look at him there. Id play him the entire game at one or both of those ILB spots just to get a real good look at him.

With Brad Jones unable to stay available anyway, its entirely possible they just decide to cut his ass and roll with some kind of timeshare between Lattimore and Barrington. Especially if Bradford looks good in the middle.

GB's decision to have Guion practice, thereby making him ineligible for PUP, is interesting. I see at least three permissible inferences: GB liked Guion all along and want him in the rotation for all 16 games (after all, TT signed him, and there is plenty of tape on Guion, and GB played games against him), and Raji's injury was not a factor in deciding to have Guion practice; GB was concerned about depth; GB's has less than complete confidence in the ability of Boyd, Pennel, and maybe Thornton to play NT. It makes one wonder how long Guion has really been healthy enough to practice.
