Brian feels good the returning quartet, including Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde and Demetri Goodson.

Episode 504

After losing Tramon Williams and Davon House in free agency, the Packers are devoid of depth at the cornerback position in Green Bay, but the Chicken Littles can stand down. The players the Packers have coming back will be solid, including Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde and Demetri Goodson. After a discussion on cornerbacks, we hear from Greg Jennings and his mea culpa from a recent interview. And we touch on Chris Borland's retirement from a Packers point of view too.

As you said, Brian, now that the Packers have lost both Williams and House the sky isn't falling. However, that isn't because the Packers already have a starting outside corner on their roster. As you said yourself (in a seemingly contradictory way) , both Hayward and Hyde are better playing the slot than the outside. Also, we must take into consideration Hyde's hamstring problem. Even though he managed to get through last season, a hamstring pull could flair-up at any time--especially if he is running full-out at the corner position. The sky isn't falling because the draft is coming.

The Packers have already said that they might draft two ILBers in this draft. And now that Williams and House are gone they might draft two CBs, too. It wouldn't surprise me. In fact, I would welcome it!

Of course the sky is not falling. I doubt any informed football fan would automatically predict doom & gloom. Someone just might step-up from somewhere.

However, losing a starter & the top back-up at CB is certainly something that both MM & TT can't like going into season 2015. At this point, neither have a solution. ---- Reminds me too much of the Safety issue from 2 seasons ago. (or BU QB fiasco from 2 seasons ago)

Of course it is a concern for MM and TT to lose both Williams and House. No doubt they tried and wanted to keep both. But, who here thinks either is worth the contracts they received from organizations with long histories of paying out stupid money in free agency? So, yes they are concerned but the option of keeping them wasn't realistic. They reluctantly move on. Capers adjusts the scheme if needed as he has done every year. They hope a young guy on the roster steps up. They do have a great secondary coach. They try to draft a talented CB if one is there on draft day. They have an army of good scouts and a great GM. Teams can't keep everyone. Good teams figure a way around it.

Sooooo.... --- Who's the starter at CB & who's the top BU at CB in 2015? That's really all that counts. --- GB will in all likelihood have ample cap space entering season 2015. ---- The "D" is already suspect. A hole at CB could very well ruin another year of AR's career as an elite QB. ---- How many more before we're back to the ineptness of Tagge, Whitehurst, Douglass, Campbell, Wright, etc. --- GB wasted BF's best years...... History is repeating itself with AR.

Seem to recall being told the sky was not falling with MD Jennings & Jerron McMillian at safety before the 2013 season.

Also remember being told concerns at ILBer were overblown heading into 2014 with steady AJ Hawk, Brad Jones still getting used to the position, and Jamari Lattimore a rising player manning that position.

3 CBs are needed, at this point we have Shields and Hayward to play the slot. Last season Hyde played safety and he lacks speed/quickness to play CB except possibly in the slot, where Hayward plays. Goodson is a complete unknown. Shields and Hayward have both missed games over the past couple of years and there is little depth.

The draft remains but at this point CB is a concern, sorry Brian.

Didnt Hyde play the slot ahead of Hayward last season?

Your comment is 'spot on'. --- All teams withOUT a strong secondary in a passing league are usually watching the playoffs. --- AR still doesn't play on the "D".

I agree the sky is not falling. I agree that Hayward could move outside. I still think the Packers need to find a larger, more physical corner in the draft. The Packers do need depth at the CB position, if nothing else. Both Hayward and Shields are on the smaller side. It is true there is a lot more than height to playing the position, even against larger receivers, but that more physical dimension is something that House brought to the table last year. You probably won't get that out of most rookies, but if the Packers don't believe they have it with one of the backups on the roster right now then they need to go get it. I like Trae Waynes, and their are other names of similar players being tossed around right now. I think Trae could come in and contribute this year. I don't like any of the ILBs likely to be available to the Packers in the first round. That's why I'm saying, "Draft Trae Waynes."

Losing these guys wouldn't be as problematic if this weren't such a poor year for CB's. If Shields or Hayward gets injured, GB is down to totally untested folks.

Richard Sherman was a 5th rounder. Tramon and Sam were UDFA's. I too have heard that this is a weak year for corners, but time will tell.
Does GB have PROVEN depth at CB? No. But none of us really know what they have, or what they can acquire.
