This study has some pretty interesting info regarding the surgery Collins had. It has some good news and some not so good news.

The AAOS study summary is interesting, but the small sample size as it relates to defensive backs limits its prognostic value for Collins' situation. There are few safeties as good as Nick Collins, so how much the physical issues of somewhat diminished range of motion and the psychological sequelae of being post injury will or won't impact his playing style and productivity are probably very individually determined, assuming he is able to return. The study seems positive overall in that a high number of cervical spinal fusion players are able to return to play, and be productive. Whatever the decision lets hope the outcome is positive and the best one for Mr. Collins life and career.
