Raiders Reportedly Sign Sean Richardson To An Offer Sheet

The Packers can match the offer but recieve no compensation if he leaves.

From Ian Rapoport:

Richardson was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent back in 2012. He has amased 42 tackles, 0 sacks and 0 interceptions since then. He did lead the team in special teams tackles in 2014.

The Packers have five days to match the offer, the details of which have not been reported yet. Green Bay would recieve no draft pick compensation if they allowed him to leave because they tendered Richardson at the lowest level and because he was undrafted.

UPDATE: Rapoport has a source who says the deal is for one year at $2.55 million.

UPDATE II: Tom Silverstien has a further breakdown of the offer and it's obvious the Raiders want to ensure Richardson ends up in Oakland. Very strong structure here. Of course, this could very well be a case where Thompson overpays a bit to keep his own guy. Goodness knows he's got the cap space:

A source said the deal consisted of a $1.35 million signing bonus, a fully guaranteed $1 million base salary, and a $200,000 roster bonus due at the start of training camp.

The next Jarrett Bush. I bet TT gives him a reasonable long-term deal.

Yeesh. 2.5 million for the guy? Sounds a bit steep to me. I don't like losing solid ST guys, but that number seems high.

Yeah, it is steep. But Ted is much more likely to overpay his own than someone else's. Plus, they certainly have the cap room. I'd be surprised if Ted lets him go.

That's a lot of money for Richardson. Good for him!

For the Packers, they have been struggling at Safety for the better part of the last two decades--at least to some degree. They've had good Safeties over that time but usually not 2. And never 4, like last year. With Safety becoming increasingly important, that had become increasingly problematic. Not wanting to let that go after looking so long makes me think they should pay the man.

Typical Raiders overpaying because they can. The bottom feeders always seem to have extra cash. Tough call, if the Packers like him because they think he has potential, then they will match.

And would be third best if only GB would acquire (the great) LaMichael James and convert him to safety.

Why not offer him a three-year deal? Lock him up. If Burnett or HHCD go down, he's worth a shot. The Packers don't need to add to the uncertainty in the secondary right now, that is for sure.

I think he is vital to the improvements McCarthy promised on ST. Give him Bush's money. Maybe a 3/6-7 deal with the same money guaranteed in this restricted offer.

I agree with Danny. If the coaches think he has learned how to cover someone, then maybe matching might be appropriate. Personally, I've seen no such evidence. I only reluctantly agreed with paying him the tender price. I'm against the long term contract due to his medical history. Essentially, Oakland is giving him $2.55 all guaranteed. I can't see giving him more guaranteed money than that, even on a 2 year or 3 year contract.

Absent a really strong endorsement from the coaches, I'd thank Mr. Richardson for his dedication and wish him well.

I don't think he's worth it either but with the other losses in the secondary bodies are getting thin back there who has played in Capers defense. It's been said it takes a few years to learn and fully understand the complexities of his defense, is it worth $2.5 million of guaranteed money to not lose another? Is Richardson more valuable to the Packers than Bush at this point? If so maybe Thompson brings back Richardson, gives him the $2,5 million and says goodbye to Bush.

You guys are correct, a lot depends on what the coaches think of this kid.

I didn't want to lose Richardson, but coming off a neck injury makes him a possible liability, just ask Nick Collins or Sterling Sharpe. TT is gonna say thanks but no thanks.

He's not coming off a neck injury. He's coming off a productive season.

Collins and Sharpe never played again after their injuries. Richardson has. It's a non-factor.

One of the best special teams players on the team. And he can contribute to the defense. I don't see Thompson letting him go.
By signing Richardson though, that could possibly end the possibility of them resigning Bush or even possibly Kuhn.
It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Top tackler on the NFL's worst special team. Decent backup. You can't teach height. No legal shenanigans. Pay him if he shows developmental possibilities. Cut him if he is at peak or plateau.

Not surprising considering the amazing hit he put on that poor Oakland RB last preseason that ended the guy's season. It'll be interesting to see if we match.

TT will never give him that much money. He never matches for anyone not named Jarrett Bush. He'll just plug in a 7th rounder or an UDFA at back-up safety and keep his fingers crossed.

I admit its alot, but its only one year. If the coaches give the thumbs, I say do it. That being said I have had a soft spot for him since he was drafted, love TT late rounders so I may be a bit bias.
