R-E-L-A-X, Relax, It's Only OTA's

Today, I attempt to bring Packer Nation back to reality and remind them it is only June, not September.

Every year during OTA's we here about how the Packers drafted an absolute steal or an absolute stud or that this is the year the Packers offense will be unstoppable.  Relax!, It's only June and the pads haven't even come on yet.  I'm pretty sure everyone said last season was supposed to be the year the Packers offense finally clicked with the addition of Jimmy Graham and a new playbook but we all know how that turned out.

Look, I am not trying to be the author of doom and gloom in June, all I'm saying is let's just pump the brakes for a second on this offense being electrifying and Rashan Gary suddenly being a revelation.  It's nice to have a post-revisionist history in June but I for one have not forgotten the Packers inept offensive doldrums of last season or all of you that said Gary was an awful pick.

Again, let's all just breathe, relax, and let OTA's and mandatory minicamp play out; and go from there.

There are certainly positive signs from the offense, the deep connection seems to be restored and the chemistry between Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers looks to be even stronger.  Rashan Gary also has shown positive signs and looks like he was not the worst pick the Packers could have made, as many people said on draft night (yes, even I knocked selecting Gary).

Gary has certainly shown off his athleticism by speed rushing an all-pro player like David Bakhtiari and then being able to bull rush through Billy Turner which is certainly promising, but again, we have to remember, it's only June.

The true litmus test for the rookie class will begin when the full pads go on in training camp and the preseason games begin.  From that point, you can begin to develop a more accurate baseline on players and project how much you think they will contribute come week 1.

As far as the offense goes, no one really knows how electric or efficient it will be until after the first month of the season.  The reality is, there are just not enough preseason reps to form any type of cohesion during in-game situations.  The name of the game in OTA's and the preseason is for everyone to stay healthy, and so far the Packers offense is healthy and looks good which puts them ahead of the game.

All that is left for the players to do is to continue to learn the playbook, become more comfortable in the offense, buy into the system, and get as many repetitions as possible.  If the Packers can continue to stay healthy and develop and grow as a team they will have a chance to get back to their winning ways.  Until that time comes, we all need to relax and pump the breaks just a bit.

What, we already have a coach who can’t walk. We haven’t signed a high priced vet in months. We didn’t get the draft picks we all knew were bound for Canton and most of the rookies haven’t been in the starting line up for OTAs. How can we relax?

Nothing matters until the game in Chicago starts. If we can win that, it's a really auspicious beginning. If we lose, we're 0-1 and still undefeated at home.

You say "Nothing matters until the Chicago game."
You are mostly correct.

But some things DO matter quite significantly.

Remember 2015 preseason game at Pittsburgh. Our season was F'd in that fake game as Jordy had a real injury that ended his season before it began.
Also, maybe 2016, Family night, Bulaga leg crumples on a kick, torn ACL.

Last year the Chargers lost Hunter Henry with a torn ACL.
There will be more this year, and hopefully they aren't out of Green Bay, but further to the west or south if any. We are due for a long stretch of better-than-average health! How many games have Brees, Brady, Russell Wilson, Rivers missed again the past 5 years compared to our guy?

Lets not forget "Our Guy" played with a tibial plateau fracture and was in a pretty fair amount of pain, especially in the beginning of the year. I've re-watched that play numerous times. The way his leg was caught and one of the Bears defenders landed on it something HAD to give. Yet just like the year before when Anthony Barr seemed to land with as much pressure onto Rodgers while his collarbone was in the absolute perfect position to snap, NOW Rodgers has been labeled injury prone.

Unlucky? Being in a especially compromising position? Maybe those things but I'm not ready to call him injury prone. Yet some here have label him such, I'm just not one of them. Some wanted to draft a QB with one of the first round picks this season. Gute did the absolute best thing to help prevent further injury …. He went out and signed Turner, drafted Jenkins, and got a bonus when Madison came back.

Injury prone? I don't know.

But I know he's suffered three broken bones....his foot his second year and his collarbone twice. If you want to add last season's then that makes 4. Plus at least 3 concussions.

My son pointed out what a good driver he was once. I started listing the tickets and bumper thumpers. It made my point with him.

Right now, Nick, our entire basket of eggs is riding on Aaron Rodgers health. We have no other QB on the roster who has ever won a game in the NFL, or has really shown he might be able to.

I, personally, think it's stupid to have a half-billion $$/year organization depend on the health of one guy......and then not have an insurance policy.

Turner will help, but you'll never put a wall around a QB strong enough to stop him from getting hit, and it only takes one hit.

90 guys on the roster right now. You can still go out and get players. You can trade.

Injuries are a part of the process and every team has them. It's foolish to say "Gosh, we lost a guy to injury before the season started and it wrecked the season". The Eagles won a Super Bowl with their backup QB. So did the Rams in 1999. You gave the example of Jordy and yet we made the playoffs that year and came within a hair of advancing.

This is the time of year when we are PREPARING for the season. The OTAs, the minicamps, the "this guy looks great in shorts" stuff....irrelevant. Injuries? Irrelevant. They're a part of the process.

Y'all give me the impression some times that if a mosquito bites one of our players that it somehow affects the season. Seriously. Take the author's advice and R-E-L-A-X. We'll be firing live ammo soon enough, and that's when things start to really count.

He is a rookie so obviously it’s going to take time. I’d worry more about the rampant expectations for Savage stoked everywhere. No rookie is going to be close to his peak and certainly not a safety.

Savage and Gary have real potential, let’s not bury them in history defying expectations. It will take time and that means more than one season. The hope this year is that they make the team better, particularly Savage. He has a low bar to jump to do that. I think he will, but he will make rookie mistakes too.

As for you Taryn, it’s clear that what the author says is nothing more than I just have. Before you answer, those of us who have read your negative screeds on Gary know that this article does not accord with your expressed views. If this is just another attempt to set yourself up to claim that you are a better scout than the collective Packers team as you did last night, perhaps an audience elsewhere might still give you credence.

I have commented on a couple of writers and their premise and that is all.

LOL, what nonsense.

You have disparaged all optimistic fans here. Your arcane blather is basically, the fans here are just mindless, follow the hype dunder heads.

So, again, the nonsense you post is shown for what it is. Pitiful. But I predicted this in 2015. :-) And 2016. And 2017. And 2018. And 2019. And 2020.

I'm so happy for your success rate. "pessimistic or not" as you say. Does your wonderful "pessimistic" record pertain to more than the last 2 years?? Or did you predict every Packer "miss?" You probably did. I'm so glad you have something to beat your chest about. Take a bow!!

But I am right more than you. Although I don't need a bow Tarynfor12. I don't need to beat my chest.

My prediction, right now, before a game is played, at least 10 teams will have a losing season.

Really idiotic, if you ask me.

Whether you believe it or not Taryn, not all fans want to be pessimistic and negative, in fact the vast majority do not. We all have negative things go wrong in our lives just like the Packers have negative things go wrong at 1265 Lombardi Ave, and if all we do is focus on the negative we would all be miserable. Even when we have a very bad day we have to look forward to the Sun shining the next and the opportunities that lay in front of us. Our hopes for "OUR Packers" is no different than the hopes we hold for ourselves and our families. We want the best for ourselves and loved ones and want to come out on top in the end. It's no different for our beloved Packers. So while no one can stop you from posting here don't expect anyone or at least not very many fans to buy into your miserable, pessimistic views on all things Packers. Most of us can see the light at the end of the tunnel. You could too if you wanted, all you have to do is open your eyes and look. There is a balance of not being overly optimistic while not being a complete downer. It's called being a realist and looking at things for what they are and what they can be. As people we should look for the best in each other not the worst, same applies as fans if you love your team.

I’m not planning my Super Bowl trip yet but they’ve definitely closed the gap between teams like the Rams, Saints, and Bears. This is the most balanced team they’ve had on sometime. All glaring weaknesses have been addressed. If they stay healthy, and that’s a huge if with our injury track record they are capable of beating any of those teams. I actually like their chance of winning the opener even more than the Bears game at home later in the season. Nobody knows exactly what LaFleur’s game plan will be.

It does appear that upgrades have been made on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Injuries always have a way of impacting any team's chance of success. The Packers have had more than their share in recent years, especially at QB, so here's hoping that they enjoy better health this season.

As far as "all glaring weaknesses have been addressed", I would suggest that the only known commodity among the Special Teams players is a second year punter that was wildly inconsistent last season. Mason is facing competition after a real up and down season last year and the long snapper may or may not be a long term solution. If you have any idea who is going to return kicks, you are way ahead of the pack. The best things we can say about the Special Teams at this point is that they are not being coached by RZ anymore and there are a bunch of crazy athletes on the roster that could be utilized this season.

RWood832 you make some very good points. I’m glad to see that Crosby will have competition. When they brought in Tavecchio, Crosby really stepped up his game. Maybe I’m wrong but I thought everyone has been raving about Trevor Davis this year as a returner and receiver?

So far Ficken is ahead on percentage. Maybe he is real competition not just a camp leg as most assumed. If so that would be Ficken wonderful!

Your points in ST are fair, though I think there was an effort to bring in ST body types in greater numbers and I think we are going to see a real competition for returner.
Seems like they had half the team back there. I’m up for giving Gary a try. Would be fun watching the gunners at least. Seriously, we need a returner who can show true potential as a role player in O or D and who is not named Alexander, Savage or Adams.

Davis is a good returner who can’t get on the field and doesn’t appear to be in contention for the slot. That’s not going to cut it even if (and I don’t) one believes the ‘ Zook told me to catch it in the end zone’ narrative. He is also in the last year of his contract, so chances are he isn’t the solution for the future.

As to our punter, my biggest problem was with his inability to keep it out of the end zone. That and inconsistency are things one might reasonably expect to improve in year two with the extra training and experience as well as gym work should benefit.

So yes, you are right that ST isn’t solved yet. For me, getting a new coach was the biggest step though. Our biggest woes weren’t at kicker or returner. It was indiscipline in terms of assignment, lack of awareness and boneheaded plays that cost us most. I think they have made a genuine effort to create competition at returner and perhaps at kicker. Gute and LaFleur do seem to be making an effort to improve matters. Fingers crossed!

Just to rewrite my earlier post about the breakout player for the Packers this year. Remember Sam Ficken, I believe he is the real deal. Give him a legit shot at the PK job, he will win. Chris Bahr I, Matt Bahr II, version number III, Sam Ficken. My concern is that Rodgers is losing all his "old" buddies. Will he put up a beef if the Pack wants to axe another old team mate friend. I hope the best man wins the PK job, Ficken.

Yup, all the hoopla and not one down is played. In the last two years we have a new GM, a new coach, four good free agents and a host of draft picks. And we still have a all-pro QB. Nothing is proven without winning. But I am looking forward to the start of the season.

This immediate off season was the time to lick wounds, scour the 'net for any scintilla of Packers (real) news, and spend time bemoaning or celebrating the new Packers staff, FA's and other additions from the draft and UFA's. It is now the time to start getting excited, to look at the positives and hope for the best. There will be plenty of time to criticize, second guess and complain once the real games begin. For right now, I'm all sunshine and butterflies. If the team starts the real season slowly and looks out of synch, then it'll be time for thunder and lightning.

Relax? Screw that!

Before the draft our GM finally gave the Packers something the Packers have been searching for since 2010... The chance of having two OLB on the field at the SAME time who can both rush the QB and defend the run and hold an edge. Not stopping there he addressed the O-Line with something OTHER than an UDFA or PS holdover. But lets not forget that Safety he stole from the Bears. Now that dude is a SS.

For the 2nd time in as many years we have a GM who had an excellent draft. Not only did he address several needs on the team, he continued to add something to the team sorely lacked under the old GM... Speed and athleticism.

The Safety position, a position that has HAUNTED the Packers since Nick Collins neck injury in week 2 against Carolina has FINALLY been addressed. Obviously we still have to wait and see, but you have to admit this new tandem seems a load better than say McMillan and Jennings of 2012 or HHCD and fill in the blank of 2014.

I don't give a damn if it's only OTA's or not. I can't remember a defense with more depth and more promise than the 2019 defense of the GBP.

Oh, and that Rodgers guy seems pretty happy AND healthy. He also seems to have that King Kong sized chip back on his shoulder and for good reason. OTA's, Training Camp, Preseason, and right on up to week one, this team IS a contender again... Thanks Gute!

Thank you Nick Perry! That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to say. Gutekunst has also shipped off all of the poor attitude, order performers without sacrificing quality for their replacements. There should be optimism. Nobody’s guaranteeing a Super Bowl this year but he’s done what he’s needed to do to get them right back in that conversation. And what’s the X factor? A pissed off Rodgers that wants to return to MVP form. Look at the other contenders. Do any of these guys put their team over the top? Trubisky, Goff, Newton, or Wentz who will definitely miss time? No more Nick Foles. The only team that can is the Saints with Brees. Eventually Father Time is coming.

Yup GB Pick 6..... Some thought Brees started to run out of gas in the playoffs. I'm not so sure about that BUT it's bound to happen and it always happens from one year to the next.

Brees is one of the GOAT but he's also 41 years old. Father time IS coming and IMO it's either this year or next. But some signs will begin to creep into his game.

Lastly... If we've learned anything about Rodgers he responds when he's felt disrespected. I think Rodgers feels he was dissed by a whole lot of people and whole lot of times these last 2 years.

We are in the way back up. How far and how fast nobody knows, but for the first time in a long time I believe we are getting better as a roster and in our approach. It will be great to be excited when our D hits the field again. That’s been gone a long time.

Yes David, what you written is all true. Expect the learning curb is steeper and sharper because of the lack of time to teach, and put in their system in both the OTA and training camp. That is strictly on the owners for putting what amounts to a beta product when the regular season starts. (Bill Gates chuckles evilly somewhere in Seattle) We fans will not 'see' real NFL football until 4-6 games into the regular reason, when teams roster and systems are in place and adjustments are made. What we see is late preseason football with a much higher injury risk for players as they adjust to the speed and violence that is pro football today. In truth, we fans do not see high level play until after the first half of the season is done. Cheapens the game from my point of view, and creates far more problems then what it's worth over the season. Think it is a accident that the league keeps trying to tinker with the game rules mid season.
As we all know, fixing this will require both the owners and players to sit down, and have a serious heart to heart talk about the future of the game. At this point the NFL is playing like a real life video game, and the shelf life of most games these days a year. (if the developer is lucky) At this rate, the only question for the NFL is not if, but when the league crashes and burns. And all because the owners were too stubborn and the players too stupid to sit down with to fix what everyone knows is crippling the game.

Sorry for mini rant here. As far as I am concerned, both the current generation of owners and players can all go to you know where and roast. All the problems the league has had comes a lack of study and practice time. Now seriously, HOW STUPID IS THAT!!!!!! And in return we see more injuries and bad football over most of the season. All because the ego of players (RESPECT ME, RESPECT ME NOW!!) and the greed of the owners (MONEY, AH THAT SWEET PRESEASON MONEY insert evil burns laugh from the Simpsons) What are these fools doing, shooting PEDs directly into their egos. What makes me so angry, is that this a problem that any single person with an once of common sense would have fixed a good decade ago. The only thing stopping both sides from sitting down is not the up coming NFL-NFLPA contract talks, but the ego and stupidity on both sides. ARGH!!!!!! (end rant)

You're on the right path , but remember, the League was founded by bookies and people that owned Horse racing operations. The NFL is big into the Fantasy game now and the legalized gaming all makes money for their Brand, excise fees , franchise fees etc and naturally, raising ticket prices each year on the fans. The last couple of autumn were perfect for enjoying the outdoors for a change, get some exercise and let the nephews sit through the Lambeau experience. Viqueens vs Pack this opener , I'll be there.

That was a good one, I hope your are not refering to people like you. But maybe your mean the guys from the "Alliance of American Football" or whoever has that "common sense" at your point of view.
In my experinaces most guys who do not have any education use that very often and it just means "emotions without any facts". Dont know why you think everybody can do anything better, even when there are never easy solutions. But if you really think you know better, that already says everything. But all the others are stupid, got it.
By the way is the NFL the best sportsleague in the world and only grows bigger compared to other sports.

BS cheap shot dude. League has serious long term issues to deal with. I did not mention gambling, but that could be the bomb that if not handled carefully, could due grave damage to the league. And if your are a 'real fan' watch the first half last year, compare to past coupe of years. The difference in play on the field is striking even going back a year. You want to go Ra Ra, go ahead, I'm not stopping you. But sloppy football=bad football and brings more injuries and more importantly to the league bad ratings. And for the NFL, that's the real danger.

I agree with you, flak, while at the same time admitting that I do not necessarily know what will improve ratings or harm ratings. The NBA lost me a decade ago with what it allows offensive players to do, but it didn't hurt ratings.

I watched the last Bucks game (note I haven't watched an NBA game in years). I watched Toronto set a moving pick nearly every play and guys ward off defenders with their left arms routinely. There was a bunch of other stuff I didn't like, but the NBA is doing just fine without me.

Are you one of the people that would go back and shame people that were excited about the new offense during offseason if during the season our offense is shit?

No, it's not that he was an awful pick, but at #12 I think he could have gone lower and we wouldn't have had to give 2 4th round picks away, maybe, maybe just one 4th rounder.
or none at all.

Doug,

What you think means as much as what I think.

I think we could have drafted Gary as our first 4th rounder and I think we could have gotten Savage as our 2nd fourth rounder.

"I think??" You think!! Means nothing.

There's nothing wrong with being excited about all of the changes. Or, even disappointed.

This is sports, so honestly none of it ultimately matters. In reality, getting worked up now is not anymore false a diversion than getting worked up week 17.

jeremyjjbrown,

You say .... "In reality, getting worked up now is not anymore false a diversion than getting worked up week 17."

I disagree a ton, respectively.

Week 17 could decide a division championship or go home for the season. I say that is a big difference.

In the context of football it matters a lot. In the context to real life, neither matter that much. The NFL.is just entertainment.

The apostrophe can be a difficult little bugger, but it's good to see *all* commenters realize OTAs does not require one as it's plural, not possessive.

Once can be called a typo, David (giving you a break on "here" rather than hear) 3 times with "OTA's" (including the damn title!) is ignorance at best. Write harder!

What was the purpose of this article? Let people get crazy ideas. It’s JUNE, this is the time when every team is a super bowl contender. Let people have their fun.

This article is nothing more than the Author projecting his interpretation of what other people are thinking. I mean the “electrifying” offense stuff comes out of some of the comments coming directly from some of the players. Heck what do you expect players to say. “Well, we might be ok”.... New Head Coach new optimism. Also, there are still as many Gary doubters as there are supporters.
This is just what fans do. After all, “fans” is short for Fanatics.

Hope springs eternal in the “Spring” for all NFL fans.

What has been “relaxing” for me is Gutey signing Turner, Madison returning, drafting Jenkins, and signing UDFA Nijman who is huge and athletic with tremendous upside.

Plug the holes on the O line and the Offense has potential to be very dominating...yes, even electric.
