Preseason Game Two Roundup: 2019

Preseason Game Two Roundup: 2019

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Out tonight: WR Trevor Davis QB Aaron Rodgers CB Kevin King S Josh Jones RB Jamaal Williams RB Aaron Jones S Ibraheim Campbell CB Josh Jackson LB Oren Burks FB Danny Vitale FB Malcolm Johnson CB Kabion Ento LB Greg Roberts TE Jace Sternberger DL Fadol Brown.  Schneidman
  • Worth noting Tramon Williams is starting CB in base opposite Jaire Alexander with Kevin King out. Williams is slot in nickel, but starting on perimeter ahead of Tony Brown.  Curtis Bolton gets the start tonight at ILB ahead of Ty Summers, same as in practice. Rest of starting defense is same as it's been all offseason.  Wood
  • When Packers go five DBs, Tony Brown takes Tramon Williams' spot at outside corner and Williams drops into the slot.  starting defense: DL: Adams, Lowry, Clark LB: Z. Smith, Martinez, Bolton, P. Smith DB: Alexander, Savage, Amos, Williams.  Schneidman
  • Interesting formation alert. Three standing “edge rushers” with Z’ & Gary right next to each other. This could be fun in season.  Herman [I can’t see from the photo who the 3rd OLB standing up was on the other side of the defense.]
  • Lane Taylor in with the second-team O-line. Alex Light at LT, Justin McCray at C, Lucas Patrick at RG and Gerhard de Beer at RT. Rookie second-rounder Elgton Jenkins replaces Lane Taylor at LG for the second drive. Rest of O-line stays the same. Dexter Williams also in for Tra Carson.   Schneidman
  • Ka’Dar Hollman got jacked by Rashan Gary and he’s down. Looks like head/neck injury.  Herman

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • G-Mo looks really good in the slot.  [Another tweet: Geronimo was wide open on the third down. Ball got tipped. Good start for G-Mo.]  Kruse
  • 2018 Packers rookie WR’s last night (J’Mon, MVS, EQ): 1 target 0 catches 0 yards.  Lazard, Kumerow, Shepherd: 15 targets 9 catches 126 yards 1 touchdown.  Herman
  • Darrius Shepherd with a TD catch for second straight week. He just keeps doing what he needs to give himself a shot at that 53.  Wood
  • Boyle is absolutely fearless. That throw to Tonyan was amazing. Missed on Shep there though. Shep had a step. Should have been a td.  Herman
  • Lazard with another Bang Post. Keep in mind during the regular season DB’s would play with inside leverage due to his marginal speed. Fun to watch now.  Eye in the Sky
  • Kumerow just took Marlon Humphrey’s lunch. That’s no easy task. We’re getting to the point where this offense is simply better when 16 is on the field.  Herman.  [Watch the video of this play provided by Joe Kipp's twitter here.
  • DeShone Kizer had Davante Adams open for a first down on 4th-and-4. Missed him. Missed him bad. A hard, high throw, and it's the Ravens ball.  Wood
  • This has been muuuccch better from the wide receivers tonight. Consistently winning one on ones & finding holes in zones. Route running has been great. That’s been an issue... not tonight.  Herman
  • Jake Kumerow has 5 catches and 5 first downs this preseason.  Kruse
  • Great read by Kizer on the blitz. Sees the corner blitz and takes the easy yards. Well done.  Herman
  • Kumerow is human. He dropped a pass.  Jake Kumerow: 3 catches for 52 yards (all first downs).  Demovsky
  • Another great second reaction play from Darrius Shepherd. He'd be on my 53 and I wouldn't think twice about it.  Kruse

Tight Ends:

  • Matt LaFleur has to know Jimmy Graham can't block inline, right? No more trying to fit this square peg in a round hole. He can't do it.  Kruse  [This is the Tra Carson for 3 yards behind the LG play, not the play with the penalty below.]
  • Baltimore declined the 15-yard penalty on Jimmy Graham. Which I get, kind of. You take the third-and-15. Only thing is, this makes for a much easier field goal. Of course, this is preseason, so none of this matters.  Wood

Running Backs:

  • Darrin Hall (finally) enters, and provides some spark to the run game. He's got 33 yards on 3 carries. Carson has 9 yards on 6 carries.  Wood
  • Now that’s the Dexter Williams we were expecting.  Herman [Big hole on the right side, Williams with a nice little cutback to exploit it.]
  • Dexter Williams has a lot of talent, but that's (dropped passes) been his bugaboo. Another dropped pass. Had some green out ahead of him, too.  Wood

Defensive Backs:

  • Tony Brown made the play, tipping pass into the air for Curtis Bolton to pick.  Wood
  • Sullivan is going to lose sleep all night about being beat for a touchdown that he should’ve picked off.  Eye in the Sky [Eh, bang, bang play.  Bit of a hot take unless they are talking about a different play?]
  • Jaire Alexander, who got away with a hold (it's only a penalty if they call it, right?), really needs to catch that pick. Not an easy play, but that's the jump he's got to make in his second season. Difference in three points on the scoreboard.  Wood [Always thought lack of INTs is why Shields wasn’t given more consideration in discussions about elite CBs.]
  • CB Chandon Sullivan, who's having a good camp, a little too aggressive against Ravens WR Chris Moore, and he paid for it. Nice pass from Trace McSorley, but no reason that should've been a TD.  Wood [Same play as above.]

Safety:

  • Really good coverage by rookie Darnell Savage down the left sideline crowding Hayden Hurts. Lamar Jackson had nowhere to fit that ball.  Wood
  • Another missed tackle. That time by Savage & an extra 8 ish yards off the missed tackle.  Herman
  • Will Redmond has missed at least two tackles tonight.  Kruse
  • Our first real look at Darnell Savage. That was really solid coverage from the rookie.  Herman  [Not sure if that’s the same play as Wood above – might be as both were written early in the game.]
  • Josh Jones isn't playing again tonight. Becoming pretty clear he's not going to be on the team come Week 1.  Kruse [But see Demovsky below as to the meaning of Josh Jones not playing.]
  • Forgot that Josh Jones missed practice this week with an illness.  Demovsky

Linebackers:

  • Really nice pass rush by Preston Smith here. A little hesitation with strong hands to quickly get to Jackson but the ball was out.  Herman
  • Randy Ramsey has something just not sure where he plays long term.  Eye in the Sky [PS?]
  • NFL LBs under 235: Darius Leonard Jayon Brown Thomas Davis Deion Jones Kwon Alexander Myles Jack Guys, it's not 1996 anymore we do not need to be obsessing about the chase linebacker's weight and ability to get off blocks in a league that throws the ball 60% of the time.  Uglem
  • Bolton's the second-best linebacker on the roster when everyone's healthy.  Uglem [Watch him shoot the gap here.]
  • That’s 5 missed tackles for Summers. Was close to 6 on the play before if the rb didn’t trip. Basically the exact antithesis of his game last week.  Herman
  • Justice Hill just embarrassed Kyler Fackrell.  Carwile

Kicker/STs:

  • By my count, Chandon Sullivan is on every single special teams, if you were wondering about his chances of making thePackers’ roster. (Hint: that's a good place to be.)  Wood
  • JK Scott got too much leg on that one. Skied it for a u5.07 hang time, but it bounced at the 5-yard line and one-hopped into the end zone for a touchback.  Wood  Another high punt with good hang time from P JK Scott: 47 yards, 4.99 hang.  Wood
  • JK Scott punt 40 yards, but sky high with a u4.96 hang time. Ravens got 9 yards on return.  Wood [Editorial:  Almost 5 seconds hang time on a 40 yard punt and Balt. Still gets a 9 yard return.  Are the dregs in or Rizzo missing?]
  • JK Scott is averaging 52.2 yards per punt. His net is 44.0.  Silverstein [Box score list Scott with a 52.8 yd. average, and 43.5 net – if my math is correct.]
  • The little things are always right with Shep. True even on the kickoff return. Fielded the ball on the left hash, but he knew the blocking scheme was set up to the right. Didn't panic or go left. Just got to the right spot and made something happen.  Kruse
  • Darrius Shepherd, trying to take advantage of Trevor Davis' absence, doing what he can to make the 53. A 36-yard return helps his cause.  Wood
  • In the box score, it's just an 8-yard return [by Shepherd]. But he turned a really good directional punt and really good punt coverage into an 8-yard return. No small feat.  This doesn't seem like a noteworthy play but the degree of difficulty is high. Shepherd had to track the punt to his right, make the catch with an unblocked defender in his face and then make that defender miss, pretty much all in one motion.  Kruse

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • Packers starting OL looked really good protecting the QB in Baltimore. Bears DL is a different kind of beast, but the Packers look ready for Sept. 5.  Kruse
  • Thought Billy Turner looked really good last night at first glance.  Herman
  • Packers have rushed 9 times for 6 yards.  Silverstein
  • Dexter Williams fumble. Cole Madison got beat soundly by the DL.  Kruse
  • Yes, that fumble is on Dexter Williams, but Cole Madison got blown back from his left guard spot and gave Williams no chance.  Demovsky [Same play as above.]
  • LaFleur pulled DeBeer and placed Jenkins at Center. The O-line found their comfort and returned with production. DeBeer should only be playing in the 4th quarter.  Eye in the Sky
  • The second time tonight Elgton’s been called for an extremely questionable hold.  Herman
  • Kenny Clark doing Kenny Clark things. Shed the center, find the football, dump the RB.  Kruse
  • The All-22 would be better but this looks like a beast of a rep by Kingsley Keke.  Carwile  [And: Keke Kingsley used a stack and shed move that flashed. Plays like that are what you look for. Those 35” arms can be an asset if used correctly.  Eye in the Sky]  Watch the video I found through Ross Uglem's twitter here.
  • That's a good play by Adams on 3rd down. Didn't rush up at the QB but took the angle to ensure he didn't lose contain. Really, really smart play.  Nagler
  • On that last third down, Gary beat the chip, blew past the OT with speed and had a step, but he couldn't turn the corner tight enough and ran past the QB.  Kruse
  • Big difference between Clay and Rashan during their rookie season. Even when Clay was being stonewalled he played with his hair on fire. Gary’s motor can use a boost.  Eye in the Sky
  • Za'Darius Smith is going to be so good. Lines up as a 4-tech and kills Ronnie Stanley.  [This is a running play.  Z beat the tackle and come down from the backside and hits the RB hard near or behind the LOS.]  Carwile
  • He basically had a sack of the quarterback was anyone other than Lamar Jackson. Beat Ronnie Stanley on an impressive move.  Wood [Here’s the pressure on a pass play.]
  • Za'Darius Smith had two or three really good pass-rushes last night. This was probably his best. That's an easy sack on most QBs.  Kruse

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • Players that I think are sneakily on the bubble: Equanimeous St. Brown Marcedes Lewis Lane Taylor Tyler Lancaster Josh Jones (maybe not so sneaky).  Herman
  • Packers defense missed four tackles by my count, accounting unofficially for about 20 yards (plus a sack). They came from Darnell Savage Jr., Adrian Amos, Za'Darius Smith and Curtis Bolton. Actually expected worse against Lamar Jackson, though penalty wiped out 2 missed tackles.  Wood [Written still early in the game – there were quite a few more misses to come!]
  • One last random thought this morning. GB’s depth of young talented WRs could potentially counterfeit themselves. For example, Green Bay could feel confident that if they cut all of Moore, EQ, Shepherd, & Lazard, that at least 2 of them would sneak through to the practice squad.  Herman
  • Lamar after Joe Webb. These pass rushers are literally going think they are rushing a statue when they play derek carr and mike Glennon.  Uglem
  • Issues through two games: Running the football; Penalties on special teams; and Missed tackles.  Herman
  • Also from last night (or early this morning, I guess), the Packers are down 36-10 in missed tackles by my obviously unofficial count. Yeah, it's the preseason, but ...  Huber
  • I honestly don't think we've learned anything of significance about Matt LaFleur's team after two preseason games.  Kruse [Might mean about LaFleur’s scheme, but I’m not sure.]
  • My watchlist tonight: Rookie improvement QB2 battle Darrius Shepherd Big Play Chandon Sullivan Curtis Bolton vs. Ty Summers Tony Brown szn Alex Light @ OT Improvement from Special Teams Crosby vs. Ficken Situational play-calling & management MVS breakout.  Herman

I put in more editorial comments than I usually do, so here is another.  Many of you might remember an article from a few years ago about the Packers' success rate during the regular season when starting at various locations on the field.  Even Aaron Rodgers had trouble moving the team when the team started out inside the 10 yard line.  It seemed to me like the Packers were backed up often last night.

I chose to use J. K. Scott's photo at the top of this article. There were other contenders. Shepherd did well on STs, and had a TD reception, but he did finish with 3 recs on 6 targets for 11 yards. Lazard and Kumerow as well, but I confess to not being on the Lazard hype train. Allison looked good. Bolton overall had a nice game. Clark had 4 tackles (3 solo tackles) in limited time.

Yes, I have a bee in my bonnet about not paying ST coordinator Rizzo.

Shepherd is a great training camp story. Keeps flashing at WR. Looks good on ST when he got more chances with T.Davis out. Hard to believe a guy with this much talent went undrafted.

It may be that ST is his ceiling (this year), but the longer Davis is out, the more chances Shepherd gets............and he isn't wasting them. Basically he is doing everything he can, day by day, to make it very tough to cut him.

On defense, In Rocky II or III his trainer had him chasing a chicken. This game reminds me of that. We all know that with Rodgers and Jones in the game the offense would look a lot better. All in all it’s a bit of a needed wake up call and valuable training.

Any updates on Ka'Dar Hollman?

It looked nasty and I'm worried for the guy. Now Gary's sitting next to Brice in the back of the "injure your own guys" bus. It would be nice if Gary could impact the other team instead somehow.

I found none. There is no practice today, so it isn't clear if the media has access to any coaches, etc.

What’s up with Tramon? The only hit / tackle he had all night was when he took out Martinez on the sideline. Do they really need him? If Gary couldn’t learn how to play football and be productive at Michigan why does everyone think that will change? Million dollar athlete and nickel football player. Now yo know why all the talk on Gary is about speed, quickness and power. He doesn’t produce. Anyone else see Tony Mandarich II?

"Gary is about speed, quickness and power."

He absolutely has to develop some pass rushing moves. He tried to do a spin move yesterday and it just looked like he was twirling in place. Your supposed to try and roll around the blocker. A top 15 pick pass rusher with no pass rush moves. Yikes.

I watched the game while doing other things which made me realize that when Baltimore was on defense the hits were loud. They really know how to hit and wrap up. Our ball carriers went down right away. When we were on defense I didn't hear the pops. We don't hit hard and dont wrap up.

I missed it watching, but I have been told that Ford had the only real YAC on a small sample.

Tap the Gary brakes....Only one question and its for the Medical staff. Can Gary see with out his glasses? He’s a special and unique talent and seemingly a great teammate.

Upon Further Review.........

I rewatched the game, and I think now the defense did better than I realized. They gave up no TDS until late in the first half when Sullivan made a play on the ball, missed, and the receiver ran all the way to the end zone.

Then, Baltimore took over on our 5 and got another one.

So take away Sullivan’s play and the fumble and Baltimore is probably at 6 after three quarters

You can’t take away Sullivan’s play. No offense Old School, but that’s should of, would of, could have. The same goes for every sport. I could say in golf I missed a putt or two that lipped out. No excuses, we lost and looked bad. On to the next game, hoping our coaching staff can improve on their lack of tackling.

I was not all that worried about our D. Sullivan was over aggressive in that position perhaps, but he is trying to make plays to make a roster in preseason. Understandable.

I think people expected sacks galore and us to scheme for a mobile QB. I really didn’t expect either. We did not adapt to the QB and their D is pretty darn good.

Our O looked a mess. But I do think it’s a bit hard to judge a backup QB on short notice isn't AR and Carson/d Williams is not A Jones J Williams. One is a rookie who cant catch at the moment and the other is camp depth. A recipe for struggle.

I think what we did see is that potential does not mean consistency. A lot of exciting youth have rough edges. I think we saw that Bolton, Kumerow and Shepherd are keepers who just keep getting it done while Lazard need a chance to show early on.

And I think they need to do a lot of tackle drills while we need not to overreact on Summers. He gets there. That’s the difficult part. The rest is teaching plus desire, and I’m not worried about the latter with him.

Look carefully on the nice play by Keke - Gary is lined up right next to him. Keke beats his man and makes a TFL. Gary is shoved back five yards. It may be early but so far it's hard to see where the talent is. Gute must not be allowed to watch the Brian Burns preseason tape, or he'll have to be put on suicide watch. This management team under TT and now apparently under Gute constantly sees things no one else does. Wasted #1 picks, add in King and Gary, and I don't care if it's preseason, he looks stiff as a board.

IDK. Looks to me like Gary has contain responsibilities and is maintaining a stalemate at or near the LOS. Either way, Gary hasn't shown up in games yet.

The bottom line, the Pack couldn't play toe-to-toe with the Ravens. On any level. (maybe punting)

I think both the Bears and Vikings are better "teams" than the Ravens.

The Pack has some serious "growing" to do.

I’m not sure. I think our O needs work, Rodgers and a running back, but I don’t think the Raven’s D is to be sniffed at in any way.

Ice....I don’t know if they are better than the Ravens, but I think they are better than us.

We actually did pretty well at keeping Baltimore out of the end zone. One bad mistake by a guy who won’t be in the lineup(Sullivan) and one 5 yard drive after a turnover.

Our offense will look different with the starters in the backfield. We’re not a bad team, but I don’t think we’re a playoff team. Time will tell.
