Players Watch Video On How Not To Tackle "Big Ben"

Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers showed his players video on how not to tackle Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Tackling Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is no easy task. The Packers learned that the hard way during the '09 meeting with Pittsburgh in which they sacked "Big Ben" five times but missed several other opportunities to take him down.

With a Super Bowl title on the line when the Packers meet the Steelers on Feb. 6, defensive coordinator Dom Capers is trying to make sure there isn't a repeat performance of improper tackling technique.

"We actually watched film today on things, what not to do," said linebacker Desmond Bishop on Wednesday. " A lot of guys are going for his pump fakes or not wrapping up fully when they have him.

"So I think it's just a mental or a subliminal note that when you get your opportunity to get him, you gotta hit, you gotta wrap up and bring all your technique, and all your weight with you, because he's definitely a big guy to bring down."

Easier said than done against a guy that stands 6-5 and over 240 pounds.

Capers said the players in pass coverage have to hold up their end of the bargain as well.

"Your cover people have to be prepared for the down to extend because it is going to extend," said Capers. "The timing – one of the best things about their passing game is when the timing breaks down because Ben has the arm strength to throw the ball any place on the field.

"When you have speed, the longer the down extends, the harder it is to cover guys.  They obviously work a lot on it in terms of flushing. You just have to stay on your coverage.  You can't relax in coverage."

Part of preparing for Roethlisberger falls on the shoulders of the scout team. They're the ones is charge of preparing the Packers defense for what they're about to face.

"We'll try to extend the play in our preparation," describes Capers. "We’re going to tell our quarterbacks, service quarterbacks back there that we want you to move around and avoid and pump fake and do all those things that he does, just like we always try to – we try to coach our scout teams, or service teams up on what we think the opponent does."

I hope Jenkins comes back with a vengeance and doesn't get thrown off like a rag doll like last year.

Wrap him up. Arm tackles won't get it and just keep coming. Definably need a good push up the middle.
