Peyton Manning Provides Another Case Study For The Packers Looming Decision

The Packers are at a crossroads and need to decide how they want to proceed. The approach the Broncos took with Peyton Manning could be a good case study.

A couple weeks ago, I examined the difficult situation the Packers are in with Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers have a lot to consider in how they handle it and how they choose to move forward.

Should they make a big push to appease their star quarterback? Should they commit long-term with big money and try win with an aging superstar?

Some call for the team to go "all in" while they still (technically) have an MVP quarterback on their roster.

The team appears to be considering all options. Last week, I looked at how the Saints handled a similar situation with Drew Brees. When looking at the best way to proceed, the Packers are no doubt also studying the situation the Broncos found themselves not too long ago.

In 2013, the Broncos had an aging superstar quarterback. They were at a crossroads and needed to decide how they wanted to proceed.

Peyton Manning was 37 (the same age Rodgers is now) in 2013. He had an MVP season, posting a career high in yards (5,477) and setting an NFL record in touchdowns (55) en route to a 13-3 season and a Super Bowl appearance. It would have been a fairy tale ending for the old legend to have his best season ever, win the Super Bowl, and ride off into the sunset.

But the Seahawks had other ideas.

The Seattle defense, at its absolute peak, sent Manning and the Broncos home as losers in embarrassing fashion.

The Broncos could have packed it in and started a rebuild after getting so close and losing with a now 38 year-old quarterback.

Instead, Denver loaded up on free agents in 2014, taking on big names (and salaries) like Pro Bowlers Aquib Talib, TJ Ward, DeMarcus Ware, and Emmanuel Sanders. Manning put up solid numbers, but he wasn't the superman he was the previous season. The Broncos finished with a great 12-4 record, but after a 1st round bye, went one and done in the playoffs.

About to turn 39, Manning was fading. In the last 5 games of the 2014 season, he threw 4 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. It looked like his age and injuries were finally catching up.

The Broncos had to make a choice with their old quarterback again. They could put him to pasture and start the rebuild, or they could make one more push for a title.

They signed some more free agents to pump up the roster around their aging quarterback, including a blocking upgrade in Evan Mathis and another offensive weapon in Owen Daniels, and brought Manning back for one more go in the 2015 season.

Manning's 2015 season was, in a word, terrible.

He missed 7 starts as age and injury caught up to him. In the regular season, he threw 9 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in the worst year of his career.

In three playoff games, he failed to throw a touchdown in two of them. In the Super Bowl, he had 0 touchdowns, 1 interception, and fumbled twice.

His impact went beyond stats, through.

Manning's arm was tapped. He couldn't drive his throws deep and struggled to hit out routes with any kind of velocity.

But football is a team game and emotion plays a big part in it.

The team rallied around their aging leader in the playoffs.

They rushed for 100 yards per game to move the ball in those three playoff games, and the defense really stepped up. They gave up less than 15 points per game and came away with 7 turnovers, including 4 in the Super Bowl. They got 14 sacks in their 3 playoff games (7 of those coming in the Super Bowl) and held their opponents to 9 conversions in 48 combined attempts on 3rd and 4th down.

In the end, the Broncos beat the Panthers to win the Super Bowl.

Manning certainly wasn't lighting up the stat sheet, and he didn't have any highlight reel plays to show for it, but the intangibles that surround one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time can't be ignored.

Manning played a role in that victory, then retired, going out on top like the storybook ending every player wants.

The following offseason, the Broncos lost a ton of free agents. They couldn't afford to re-sign everyone after all they did to load the team up for their run.

In the 5 years since then, the Broncos have averaged 6.4 wins per year, have gone through 10 different starting quarterbacks, and have made the playoffs 0 times.

It's the price they paid for going all in.

Sure, a case can be made that it's worth it for a Super Bowl championship. If any team knew for certain that they could trade 5 years of despair (and counting) for a title, they probably would.

But things aren't always certain.

Drew Brees showed us that things don't always work out, but Peyton Manning showed us they can.

The Packers have a choice to make on an unknown future.

It remains to be seen what they will do.

This is such a great synopsis of what occurred with Manning & the Broncos. Good piece, Bruce!

If true Aaron Rodgers wants to play elsewhere, then I’m all for that, trading him, and turning the QB1 position to Jordan Love a year earlier than expected. Offering AR the sun & the moon to try again here in GB with him not wanting to be here makes little sense to me. Seems to be more of a risk to the team than going with Love.

Odds of winning it all with a malcontent QB vs. a 2nd year QB with more team weapons via trade? Love is the answer.

Well GG , I agree that that was a good survey of the histories of older qbs and what to do about it! However , you seem to ignore some of the major points in it. One is that the comment where a great qb has intangibles that can be irreplaceable even when there game slides e.g. Mannings victories at the end of his career including Superbowls ( this could have been extended to include Elway!) . I read the piece as a yet another explanation of why Rodgers should be resigned with a new extended contract and not a reason to let him go and start Love!
No team has won the Superbowl with a player taking so much of the salary cap as Rodgers and this still could be the case in a new restructured contract . BUT if there ever were an exception to the rule this would be it!

.Rodgers healthy is too good . We have an AWESOME offense and our defense is catching up .
I think Rodgers is ,as Kuhn and Jones have said , is just trying to make sure of his future . The NFL unlike the NBA has not gone the route of Superstars and can't implicitly as part of the multiplayer game . It isn't a game about a starting 5 and never has been. Rodgers is looking for some behind the scenes leverage to secure a future where he plays another 5 years as a starter and not 2 or 3 where he goes the way of Favre etc. He would be fine here if he feels like he doesn't have to look over his shoulder. We can win the SB with Rodgers even taking too much money. But as I have said elsewhere winning the SB is not really the main thing in my personal opinion . It is enjoying the full 17 plus season. I would ALWAYS want a Rodgers with one SB over an Eli Manning with 2 . I want someone to have the guts to disagree sometime . Everyone wants to think it is all about Superbowls and it Ain't!

Manning won that last SB because of a change in the offense to favor running and because the defense played lights out. The team had to actually overcome Manning's weaknesses in order to win - they didn't win because of some mystic BS about intangibles.

Mortgaging the future so that AR can have one final run at a ring in GB is a strategy worthy of the Chicago Bears, not the Packers.

GG, love reading your posts. Your JL take is a good one, though a bit optimistic IMO but why not.

So I don't disagree with your take but do have points to be taken into consideration IMO that may sway the "move to JL now take".

IMO AR isn't aging like Drew and Peyton, can't say it won't hit fast as these things do but IMO he has a few more years than those guys.
AR is a Great QB and gives this team the best chance to win at this time.
This scheme is perfect for an aging QB and will allow him to hide some age.
JL has potential, AR is proven.
To have AR and not try a few more times really could be a regrettable move.

To me it comes down to plenty of the points you have made, setting a negotiated position, (IMO that position would favor AR, and negotiate in good faith toward it).

So ya, don't give him guarantees past age 42, don't pay him top salary or at least top salary that won't be overtaken right away.

IS AR going to insist on taking it to a point that will possibly hamstring the Packers both when they have him plus after he leaves. Is it impossible to move on after 4 years of a 5 year contract if the collapse comes early? Is he demanding so much money that it becomes a hindrance in building a complete roster that can win with him?

MY View, offer him a contract within the parameters set out, if he won't accept, force him to play on his current contract or retire for at least 2021 then reevaluate.

Don't get it wrong, I'm looking forward to the JL era, to all your points he has a real shot at being a viable QB that can lead them to the promised land. Between MLF coaching and Gutes Personnel moves they may not need a GREAT QB to win. Lets face it, its only worked once so far, what makes one think that AR is going to start having his best games in the playoffs instead of during the regular season.

Again, spot on. If the Packers can hold the line this year they should be in a better position financially in two years.

Giving in to Rodgers is pointless. I suspect the team will be 9-7 or 10-6 this year with or without him. The schedule is a murderer's row.

I will think less of the Packers if they give into Rodgers and mortgage the future.

The TEAM also includes a great offensive line, an outstanding running back, a great wide receiver(at least for one year). They've drafted to help the defense that includes perhaps the best corner in the league, at least two great defensive line players. They have an All-Pro kicker.

THE TEAM IS NOT JUST AARON RODGERS! An average QB will lead this team to victory.

Did the team fall apart when Brett Favre retired?

I think you're on to something here, HarryHodag, with the part about holding the line on 12's salary to keep the salary cap healthy. This is the most sensible explanation for the conflict.
12 and the GM might hate each other, too, but they're grown ups, and MM should be able to manage the relationship side so neither Gute's lack of people skills nor Aaron's arrogance explain it.
The money Q does.
However, we read a few days ago they offered him a huge contract....

I wish Rodgers would say something (if only to try to repair his image).

Yup! So let’s add a player or two there and make the run with the great unknown, Jordan Love.

Can you imagine this Packer D with Patrick Surtain ll, Eric Stokes & Jaire Alexander, and the cap room to sign a Sheldon Richardson?

I can. Especially with 26-6 HC Matt LaFleur guiding the way and a MAULING rushing attack in Jones/Dillon/Hill. I actually like our chances a lot there, in that scenario.

Here's another fact. The D gave Rodgers 3 2nd half turnovers to win the game and reach the SB. He squandered them by only getting 3 pts! He has been in alot of NFCCG and played poorly in every one of them! The D deserves some blame, but Rodgers certainly does too!

I don’t think anyone suggested that it was solely on Rodgers. That doesn’t affect the view that he was part of the problem later in the game.

Personally I primarily blame Pettine for his timid defensive strategy in the first half that got us into the hole before the D showed what it could actually do when the situation forced Pettine to let them play. We should have won that game, but Rodgers 4th quarter play was still a factor.

A cpl weeks ago there was a piece on CHTV that compared the Packers and Bucs records over the past decade. Most comments were in favor of the Packers getting close but, never winning the superbowl. As opposed to Tampas years of bad football with only a cpl winning seasons and a SB win.

I for one would be ok with a cpl years of down seasons with high draft picks rather than going 10-6 and 9-7.

Anyway if AR leaves, get ready for several years of bad football everyone. The chances of Love being the next great Packers QB are very slim.

If you think franchise QBs come walking through the door everyday just look no further than every other team in the division or Tampa even.

I could care less what AR personality is or what his salary is. As long as he shows up on game day and plays to his ability im happy. If you think AR attitude is he is a diva or whatever the word of the day is dont watch or read his interviews.

Those of you that are quick to move on to Love as QB must miss the days of 4 and 12 teams. Or with the new schedule 4 and 13.

Your scenario arguing AR is our only hope of winning it all is empty and could wind up getting us to 4-13 a hell of a lot faster than the inverse.

We haven’t even gotten into the dance in the last 10 seasons. I question if some of our current players wouldn’t prefer Love over Rodgers to close the deal on winning another Super Bowl...? Do you think they might be tired of all this drama and sidelines squabbling? AR is all of a sudden going to turn over a new leaf and buy into what LaFleur wants to do? Really? He’s pass happy. 16 carries total between all of our RBs in both of the past two NFCC games.

Do you think a stellar DEFENSE may have had more to do with winning it all in the 2010 season than Aaron Rodgers? BJ Raji. Clay Matthews. Charles Woodson. Nick Collins. Tramon Williams. Sam Shields. Cullen Jenkins. AJ Hawk. Ryan Pickett.

Give me Jordan Love, a couple of key defenders added to our current group PLUS two or three R1s, free from a salary cap death spiral all freaking day.

All i am saying is franchise QBs dont come along often. To discard possibly one of the 5 best all time is foolish.

To think J Love is going to win a SB This year is absurd!!! At best, if he develops into a real QB we may see a SB appearance in 3 years.

Dont forget about mark fucking Rypien or Jim fucking Mcmahon (see I can do that too) thats 5 out of 55 superbowls. Meaning generally speaking it takes a upper tier QB 10 times out of 11 to win a superbowl. The thing that the aforementioned QBs have had was a dominant D. The last time GB has had a dominating D Reggie White was still a Packer.

We will have to agree to disagree. You seem to think franchise qbs are not important or easily found. History says otherwise.

Piss off man.

Easily found... what do you think I’ve been saying this whole time? Jordan Love is a top talent who dropped 20 draft positions. The equivalent of 2 first round and 1 second round picks for where GB normally selects.

THEY ARE NOT EASILY FOUND!

Don’t tell me about Reggie White. I’m good friends with Gilbert & Santana, along with some others from those 1996 and 2010 SB winners. WHATEVER...

What do you think I’ve been saying about a dominant D? Maybe add a couple more players there. Right?

You’re the one crying winning the Super Bowl can’t be done without AR at QB. You’re also saying Rypien & McMahon weren’t considered “upper tier?” Rypien won 2 Super Bowls. McMahon was a stellar passer and a #5 overall pick. Are you fucking kidding me?

You completely missed the point. Dilfer, Johnson & Hoss were game managers. Jordan Love, with all the weapons he has, a stellar running game, a solid D and LaFleur’s guidance doesn’t have to wear the Superman cape AR always likes to don. All Love needs to be year 1 is a game manager.

Jordan Love winning the Super Bowl this season is no more “absurd” than Aaron Rodgers winning it in the 2010 season.

Not a single player on Green Bay with the possible exception of some UDFA or a rookie would prefer Love to Rodgers .Enough said .!I would prefer Bortles over an unproven Love at this juncture . Love has possibilities is all. GG I wonder if you have some attitude that just disdains what you would call a diva. I think all Rodgers just want ls ls to secure his future with GB and not get forced out ! I don't blame him. These things are usually political in essence. I will always go with the worker over management. I am a professional caregiver. I help people who are elderly and disabled . My pay sucks but I am happy to help out. Rodgers doesn't for all his money make what the big boys( i.e Management , the Jerry Jones'sof this profession) do in the NFL. Beyond that is the fact that Rodgers is 10 times more enjoyable to watch then most qbs that do win the Superbowl. It is a now 17 game season not counting playoffs. Eli Manning winning the SB with the Giants is half as interesting as Rodgers losing to TB in the NCCG over a dumb field goal choice at the end of the game!

people don't want to face the facts you point out. They haven't won with him. he has not had his best games in the playoffs. having a QB that is a cap killer and doesn't play his best games in the biggest games is a recipe for just what they have done. Good seasons, disappointing postseason. Why would it change? It may only get worse if he gets the money and years he is demanding.

Sure we don't know what we have in Love true. But we do know what AR has done and for those only worried about SB wins he hasn't produced them.

Favre was selected in 2nd round and Packers traded for him. He turned out pretty good!

As much as many seem to think Love will not turn into a good QB I believe the opposite. I believe he will be bringing an exciting style of football to GB. Add to the fact Gutey immediately turned the downward spiraling Packers from 6 victories and doubled that number each of the last 2 seasons and I'm much more optimistic the Packers trajectory is upwards with or without Rodgers. Might there be a slight backwards movement in the win loss record in 2021 with Love? Possibly but who is to say the Packers would win anymore with Rodgers? Every year it is all a sort of a crap shoot!

True JB but AR has suffered some pretty significant injuries himself. It's a young man's game and AR is one of the oldest players in the league. It's only a matter of time before 'Father Time' catches up. I can see how difficult it would be for the Packers to commit to AR beyond his current contract.

Yes, old QBs can fade from one year to the next. EX. Payton, Brees. Rod has one fully guaranteed year and if he plays well another. That's the contract he signed, no more no less.

Starr's arm left him in 1971, which is why he retired in '72. P. Manning had no arm in his last year, but game-managed his way to another ring. If Rodgers wants to sit out 2021, he'll be half the QB that he is today in 2022.

I tend to agree packmann.... As much as I'd love to believe Rodgers can be Tom Brady II and played WELL into his 40's, Brady's the ONLY one to do it. Manning came back and showed his greatness in 2013 and the bottom started falling out...FAST

Rodgers was beyond motivated last season. The facts are we don't know what the next few seasons might look like. What I remember MOST about last season was that NFCCG where Rodgers was given chance after chance after chance and did nothing with them.

Tom Brady is the ONLY one to have beaten "Father Time" and when it does hit with Brady it's happening in a snap.

I still believe had Mahomes had his his two starting Offensive Tackles and/or Rodgers had Bakhatieri, Brady wouldn't have even made the SB let alone win it but that's my thing.

As a pure QB, I think it’s already happening. This year could be more obvious. Tampa had a really good roster and some luck getting to the playoffs and then with key injuries on the opposing O lines against us and in the Super Bowl.

I also think it is worth pointing out that they were excellently coached. LaFleur had his backside handed to him yet again in a key game (with considerable help from Pettine). Not enough credit to the coach and too much to Brady? Either way, Brady didn’t win them the crown by QB play. He is diminished physically.

He has been plagued with collarbone injuries and then a few knee injuries. overall a very healthy QB and isn't all that banged up. But he did lose some of his prime years due to injuries, at least 3 that are public. Kinda normal.

What percentage of the Broncos' overall cap did Manning command in 2014, 2015?

it seems to be overlooked that the cap just took a massive hit for the first time in recent memory (maybe ever?). Rodger's contract didn't get reduced to offset the cap reduction.

We went from a Salary cap of $203M in 2020 down to $182.5M in 2021.

This idea of "going all in" with FA to exploit a final run with Rodgers doesn't work out. We had to let players walk and restructure a bunch of players just to fudge the numbers around to get under the cap in the first place.

Until the cap ceiling bounces back sometime in the future, existing top-dollar contracts are going to really put teams in a bind.

The plan was most likely to try the best they could to keep the core of this team together for one final run at a SB before trading Rodgers and resetting for the future.

11.66% in 2015.
12.84% in 2014
12.42% in 2013

It is a little unfair to compare that to Rodgers' deal straight-up because extending and restructuring could drop his number a lot right now, and that is without considering the cap drop that happened in 2021. Looking back Rodgers' numbers were

10.61% in 2020
15.06% in 2019
11.54% in 2018

I've been arguing this for a while now - Rodgers' ticket to another Super Bowl involves keeping his salary in check so that more pieces around him can be signed. If he is looking for a big money commitment I can see why the Packers were reluctant, and why he was offended by that reluctance. So I do think the best thing for everyone is for Rodgers to move on, if not in two weeks then in nine months.

Thank-you - packer fans on this website are some of the most football savvy fans around.

Notice how the media NEVER speaks to the salary cap issue with the Packers? It is real and a direct impact on the ability to win a SB.

To the point made. The cap issue must be weighed against the contract demands when making a decision. Everyone is so quick to point to Brady but seldom do the same posts mention how he played under market value for years to give his team a competitive advantage. NE was a cut throat organization, often cutting fan favorites and taking advantage of prove it veterans.

Its simple AR play at a discounted rate so the Packers can afford to bring in 1-2 year FAs to continually fill positions of weakness. In return the Packers give you a 5 year guarantee at a 35M/yr contract that can be pushed out to be like a 30M/yr contract.

he hasn't and wont. he wants it all, Money, guarantees, years and to ensure the Packers suck after he leaves. His worst nightmare is the Packers moving on and them not taking a huge hit. Why? Because he wants it known it was him and only him that made the Packers great for his tenure. that is who he has shown to be, he is willing to take down the team, teammates and fans that have been so appreciative of him to get even. His actions make it obvious.

i don't need to like the man to appreciate the talent and want him on my team.

I’ll say the same thing as last week on this. I don’t think Rodgers is or was asking for money.

“Big difference....Rodgers can still chuck it 50 yrds down the field. He is 38. Huge difference between 38 and 42. Rodgers has said he wants to play until age 40. He still overthrows deep balls...so plenty of arm .Brady is 43? and hasn’t ever been asked very much to chuck it beyond 30 yrds...his offense has just rarely been designed that way. It’s always been centered around running and TE play....kinda like what the packers are trying to do now.

If I were the Packers, keep him until 41. Deal with him and try to get him weapons.”

Payton was coming off of neck surgery, there was a question of him being able to play football ever again. Before that he had season ending injuries. Another team took a chance on him. But the colts really didn’t have a choice other than to let him go. Rodgers is different...he battled thru injuries with a suspect running game and suspect rookie receivers. And this year had an MVP year with 1 legit #1WR and a suspect defense. So totally different boat. Like I said I doubt his issues are money as he is a smart dude but I do think he had legit complaints about personnel selections. Remember when all of us were complaining about the Packers rolling with MVS, St Brown and a bunch of no names. No true slot WR and Adams getting doubled every play??

Well, we weren’t exactly wrong on that. I think Rodgers will get over his beef with management, but I wouldn’t blame the dude one bit for being miffed. And I really don’t think the situation is about his paycheck at this point in his career.......Management: “ oh, by the way, here is a new coach, new system and btw you have to use the same jags @ WR.” If I were Rodgers I wouldn’t exactly be thrilled about that either.

This year we finally got a potentially good slot WR( 3 yrs overdue) Don’t have to worry about TEs and FB types. If Tonyan ,Deguarra and Daffney can be healthy and avail...it’s gonna be good.

They picked up some pieces on the D but we have no clue what that will look like with a new DC.

Weren’t exactly right on that either after the Packers WRs we’re setting NFL records for efficiency through the first 5 weeks of 2020. That said, I would have loved one more WR last year who could have gotten regular, consistent separation, like Amari Rodgers. No question.

At #30 last year, I wanted the Packers to take Michael Pittman Jr. in the worst way.

It's also not about weapons on offense. He has the #1 LT, a top 3 WR, top ten RB ( and running game if they choose) and what should have been a Pro Bowl TE.

Rodgers squandered 3 2nd half turnovers vs TB, and has generally played poorly in every NFCCG he's played in.

The Packers are certainly better with Rodgers than Love. But we cannot simply absolved him of blame for not having another SB.

Drafting Love wasn't a mistake either... this simply comes down to Rodgers asserting his leverage. In a non pandemic reality they might be able to go all in, but in this circumstance they can't do much more than they have. Rodgers has a right to use his leverage to get guaranteed years. IMO this year and next, then reevaluate after the '22 season, based on Rodgers play and Loves development.

Will Rodgers accept that?

The Saints comparison was much more relevant to our situation. The Packers defense is not dominant to the point where we can afford to field a game manager at QB. In the 2015 regular season, the tandem of Manning and Osweiler combined to throw 19 TDs and 23 INTs. In the Super Bowl, the Broncos tallied only 11 first downs, while they recovered 3 Panthers fumbles.

So at this point, the Packers still need their QB (whoever that may be) to be playing at a reasonably competent level if they expect to go far in the playoffs. You could probably say the same for the Saints or any other team without a stifling defense.

Can you imagine the defense you could have with 40M more a year to spend on Fa's? that's what the team will have after the dead cap years. Oh and all the draft picks.

the cap is so bad next year that even without AR it might be tight after resigning DA and JA.

they really don't need to spend money on offense. They are loaded. Top OL, TOp WR, TOp RBs, Good TE. They are loaded. And it showed having the best O last year. Its not just AR that enabled that.

They could extend Z or get a better Edge defender, Upgrade at ILB, Find a pass rushing, run stuffing 5Tech. Upgrade at Slot or find a stud to take over for Savage if he takes on that role.

All for 40M. Love or whomever else just needs to be good, run the offense, protect the ball.

The issue is moving away for AR when you still have cap issues and Love had little development due to Covid last year. AR for 1-2 years, Thats ideal. And thats what irks AR to no end. He can't have the packers let him go and be successful.

I love Rodgers as the QB, but I also accept that they haven't been able to get out of their own way since the 2010-11 SB season, and I do not fail to put some blame on Rodgers. The question is 'Can GB get to the SB without Rodgers' because they haven't been able to with him.

I don't know what Love can do and maybe he'll be another great one for GB. Does the FO take that chance and if they can get the pieces that many are clamoring for from Denver, maybe Love can do enough with those absolute upgrades to give us an early tenure Rodgers-like run and win this season.

I do know one thing I can't bring myself to concede at this moment, and that's the likelihood the chances of GB getting into the SB are lower than the previous two seasons with Rodgers. Perhaps a change from what seems a constant is what the team Doctor is ordering without saying.

Something needs to change and perhaps this is it. It certainly can't be worse since a winning record at times, and all the time in GB the last decade can guarantee the same ending as a losing record, no SB. Anything less is losing or at best as often screamed aloud guarantees the excuse of drafting low and the reason for the constant failing.

Very well said, TarynsEyes.

Nobody knows which is the best course to winning the Super Bowl this year with any certainty.

What we DO KNOW, is if we don’t win it all WITH Aaron Rodgers this year, all bets are off for a very, very long time, because next year and for years to come afterwards WE WILL BE IN CERTAIN CAP HELL.

Add to that, if we were to convince AR to come back this year, it is highly unlikely we won’t be able to add another defender to this year’s team, nor will we be able to keep Davante Adams next year.

There are a lot of negatives attached to keeping AR this year - for the Packers, if that is even a possibility, due to our current cap situation. His trade value will never be higher. There’s no doubt he will help the team he goes to.

The original contract had Rodgers here and with a legitimate shot if he had rejigger his contract. If he won out he was going nowhere, if he was MVP he was going nowhere. Then Rodgers’ ego stepped in. Like it or lump it.

If the original option Isn’t adhered to our and his chances of winning this year WITH him go down. Once that sinks in, moving on. Once unthinkable, becomes logical. Well done Mr. Rodgers, this one is on you if you continue to hold to your recent course. That’s without even considering the media BS, just looking at football reality and contribution to winning or not.

Taryns agree with much of what you have written. Trading AR for a large payoff (players + draft picks) could be a great solution to the 2022 and 2023 SB possibilities (not this season). I simply do not accept that today we are in a situation of uncertainty due to the fact that our GM had not considered the anger of AR for the choice of Love .... If we were to switch from AR I would have liked that it had been done at the beginning of the season having the possibility to choose excellent positions already in this draft (maybe even the Q) being able to program in a much better way and spending for better positions and better players.
But this is just my thought

Taryne Eyes , you are always among the most thoughtful on this cheesehead site. My simple question is this . Are Superbowls the end all? I agree Rodgers and Favre only brought us 2 SBs in 32 years but they have made us one of the very few teams worth cheering for and watching . Of course if we could have both it would be beyond ideal but that has not happened for so many teams with great qbs . The list is endless and Brady and a few others are the rare exceptions to this . Is it possible to evaluate the success of a qb in other terms than their winning a Super Bowl . The answer is Yes . I am So glad we have had Favre and Rodgers for 32 years and not some boring qb who may have won a SB with this team.
Because I respect your thoughts maybe you can answer this question for me. Is winning the SB that important?

To say winning the SB is the end all would be severe, but winning them should always be the main goal, even when your common sense tells you that you can't, less a miracle.

I often point to the failure of the Packers to have won more SB's on bad player signings and what appears to be a premeditated policy to obtain FA's that have no real value or ability to correct the lackings needed to win an SB. The last two attempts and being back-to-back semi-finals appearances have shown that this issue is still at the top of the list.

The FO took forever and needed some help from Rodgers to unseat McCarthy who was allowed to retain assistant coaches far beyond their value and outright inability to coach up players and produce in-game fixes that were and at times still easily pinpointed by the fan and the few knowledgeable broadcasters.

My displeasure with not winning more isn't based on a distaste for winning the Division, it's because we and hopefully the FO knew the teams during the last decade would/could/should have won at least 1-2 more and they didn't seem to care by the inaction or actions they took and how each was detrimental to the teams' goal-achieving success turned into failure.

We have lost out on what should have been too many times this past decade and that makes simply winning games harder to accept as enough, as like a birthday cake without having the candles on it to blow out. It's a birthday celebrated, but it doesn't erase the fact.

Does anyone honestly think the Packers would have the following that they do without all the Super Bowls and championships? And I would also think that if you asked the more famous QBs that haven't won the Super Bowl if they would maybe trade that for an individual award, they would take the Lombardi Trophy in a nanosecond.

What you write confirms once again what I have been saying for some time. For the past 3 years we should have been trying to build a top 5 D with the Ar going on with the years. Now even more. (It seems to me that Gute thinks differently)

Packers have drafted heavily for defense with top picks for the last decade.
Gute has drafted heavily for defense in general.
Gutekunst also brought in many defensive players in Free agency.

Has it all worked out like we hoped? Nope. Lots of misses on defensive players in the draft.

However, this narrative that Gutekunst has neglected the defense is absolutely ignorant and has zero basis in fact.

Perfect Fabio! I agree . My quarrel with Gute and La Fleur is that they haven't spent enough in the last few years on the defensive side of the game . We had the number one offense last year FFS ! And close to it in the last few years. Let's improve the defense more . Go on ! Waste a high draft pick on a good ILB and a first rate IDL for a change . It is obvious that we can't stop the run! This is why SF beats us several years ago. Then this year we lost to TB due to our so so called vaunted pass rush and even more the inadequate db situation.
This year we did a little better in our draft priorities than last year which were so offense oriented that it was ridiculous! A qb and rb and Degura whatever role he may eventually become ?! La Fleur is amazing but shouldn't dictate all the priorities of the team during the draft . The worse criticism of him I can make. He has been a brilliant coach otherwise .

Gutekunst draft facts:
2021: 4 of 9 Picks are Defensive, including first round selection.
2020: 3 of 9 defense, all later picks. The only year you people seem to remember.
2019: 5 of 8 are defense; including (2) first round selections.
2018: 5 of 11 defensive picks, including the first 3 picks.

17 of 37 picks made by Gute are defensive picks (~46%), including 4 first round picks over 4 years.

For shiggles, if you want to look at 2017 (a year some speculate Gute was actually calling the shots due to TT's health), the Packers used their top 4 picks that year on defense, too.

Yet again, I'll mention FA acquisitions (Smith and Smith, Amos, Kirksey etc).

Please, stop with this unsupported notion that Gutekunst has ignored the defensive side of the ball. Not true.

Do none of you recall the state of this roster when Gute took over? If you do not think it has improved dramatically, then I doubt you do. Threadbare, Swiss cheese, both were common and accurate adjectives.

Some of this chatter assumes things which are wholly unrealistic. Usually it seems to try to assert that Gute let down Rodgers and absolve the latter of any possibility of being less than perfect.

As usual it’s a bit of both, but the team side aspect lies in the period prior to Gute being hired primarily. That is where the Packers let Rodgers and us down.

As to Rodgers, he was starting this year till he decided it didn’t suit him to see out his current contract and threatened to withhold his labor. That was his and our best shot. If that makes Rodgers look heroic putting his personal interests before the long term prospects of the team but also his best chances of winning, then you are either naive or Star struck.

That’s your choice, but less of the apologism and baseless excusing and you might see why giving him what he wants us going to make it harder for us and him to win, probably to the point where it’s going to prevent that happening. It’s already damaged our roster options for this year.

It’s really a shame how Ted Thompson declined before all of our eyes, and you’re right to point to some of those years and drafts.

Gutekunst has done what looks like a very solid job righting the listing ship in Green Bay. Made mistakes like all do, but seems to have learned from them.

Think of all the scouts and personnel staff that has been poached along the way as well over the years. Nuts.

The salient part of this is buyer beware with any player outside the age curve. The Packers knew that as its reflected in the current contract. Whether you like it or not, it’s also a driver for Rodgers. Manning is a much more probable scenario than Brady.

Too much certainty that Rodgers will sustain last year enough to get us to win or justify his cap hit. That’s why letting him go if he’s demanding several years of guarantees or an amount that forced the spread of cap hits after his gone would be a really low percentage move. In fact, the best odds are years of irrelevance.

Either Rodgers reins in his demands or he’s not here or, if he gets his way, the FO will be gutted, and probably LaFleur. It won’t be pretty unless we win the lottery on Rodgers body and health and probably have a weaker roster that he must carry to victory.

The brutal fact is, the contract that Rodgers is so up in arms about is very generous but no longer guarantees. That is as it should have been. Sometimes the truth is unpalatable. Sometimes the easy is wrong and sometimes if you get what you want you regret it for years.

Why; because the truth always comes out. You think you only have to follow #4. or somebody else? This franchise had two All-pro qbs! And they crapped all over both now. Murphy's two for two. He could stop it! And the lessons learned may haunt the Packers for years to come. It's about treating your own right. People are loyal to whom they work for. Rodgers was Loyal. The idea that we could win the SB with Love is RIDICULOUS! Rodgers was 6 and 10 his first year. Love has not even played a pre season game . The FO would start Bortles and end with him at this stage if Rodgers were not around or MM should fire them!

GIve it up on the hate for Gute. Favre retired several times and kept coming back. He told the Packers he was done, so Rodgers was the guy. Then Brett shows up at training camp. Gute has brought in a good coach who went 26-6 and has built a strong team in a short time. Rodgers was unhappy with certain players, McCarthy, and LaFleur in his first year. He's one of the best to play, but got his feelings hurt when Packers started planning for the future. Rodgers said he didn't want to play for the Packers anymore, so what is management to do? I hope he is back for one more year with a Super Bowl win. Life goes on after Arod retires.

Granted; I don't like Gute. But it has nothing to do with Rodgers. It has everything to do with his trading moves, and avoiding the DL. I felt Defense before Love!! And have posted so. # 4 did say Retirement. But the Packers didn't care about winning and went with development. Changing the career of others. Gute didn't bring in LeFluer, Murphy did. And Gute put his two cents in. Rodgers wanted to keep Nelson and players he thought he could win with. Development only kicked the can down the road. The draft Guru's kept calling for a WR to be drafted. Management should have traded him per his request. Why come back to a franchise who won't go all in? You'll get to see just how good the packers are without him. Gute would have been fired if Rodgers wasn't the QB.

We don't agree but that's ok. I wanted more help on the DL too last year and this year, but I have trust in the coaches who know way more than me. Slaton could be a good addition to the DL and maybe Rush makes the team. I saw a mock depth chart with Lancaster gone. New defensive Coordinator so maybe his schemes will have more help from LB's at the line. Rodgers wanted Kumerow who had 1 catch and 22 yards last year with the BIlls. Jordy played one year with the Raiders and retired, as he had slowed down. Jerry Kramer said this week that Rodgers is illogical, and needs to play at 100% and get a ring instead of 80%. Everyone has different opinions. I actually want Rodgers back for 1 more year (or more) and get a Super Bowl ring. Without him it will be a long time. But this is a very good team that Gute has put together.

Everyone has had a bad boss in their life, and they learn how to thrive despite a bad boss. So suck it up Rodgers, Gute may not be the best, but hasn't done anything bad either. So what if Gute didn't pamper Rodger's ego. Even if he wasn't the best GM, or below average, just thrive, anyway. At least give one year more, and go out next.

Actually neither of these supposed cautionary tails are cautionary tails - they are fairy tails. Both Brees and Manning had been injured late in their careers. Mannings neck was serious as were both of Brees injuries. I would dare to say that both of these QB's used different levels of skill sets than AR does. Both worked mostly from the pocket and used superior playcalling and adjustment at the line of scrimmage and a quick release on their passing. Both lost velocity and accuracy near the end of their careers. Now AR does have the same line of scrimmage command and still has some type of escapablilty and definitely hasnt lost anything from either his quick release nor his accuracy nor velocity. So as far as this and the Brees article I would give them a big thumbs down and really have nothing to do with a case study - or putting it another way - not much can the Pack establishment learn other than sign the guy to an iron clad 3 or 4 year extension.

It's easy to see Rodgers has lost a great deal of accuracy and velocity over the last 4-5 years on his typical throws.

Occasionally you see flashes of his former accuracy and zip, but not regularly.

Luckily, his diminished skills are still better than most QBs- but make no mistake, they have drastically tailed off over the last half decade.

Sure they have decreased ...... and it is also normal otherwise we would have SUPERMAN .... for this reason we would have had to focus on the construction of a D top 5 (as happens for any winner or SB contender with senior Q) .... .. but we like to be different
The fact remains that currently removed Mahomes I would not exchange it with anyone else

At first I thought this was a tongue-in-cheek comment, then I realized you were serious. Lost a great deal of accuracy? He completed 70.7% of his pass attempts last year, a career high. How exactly is that a dramatic drop-off?

You can throw a ball with reduced accuracy and still get a reception.

More balls thrown behind WRs, forcing them to slow down or break stride to secure the catch. More balls thrown low at their knees or feet, or high forcing the WR to leave his feet to make the catch. Balls thrown underneath rather than over the shoulder to lead the receiver.

There's a lot more to NFL accuracy than simply putting the ball where the intended target can make the completion, and it's the difference between a journeyman QB and an elite one. If you haven't seen the decrease in accuracy over the last 5 years with Rodgers, you haven't been paying attention.

He WAS better in 2020 than the previous 4 or 5 years. Mostly because it looks like he started actually taking coaching and correcting his horrible habits. I believe it was due to the fire lit under his behind when the Packers drafted Love.

Still, the accuracy and velocity has definitely declined.

I totally agree on the diminished accuracy. After 2019 I was pretty sure I was witnessing the decline. Rodgers fixed his footwork some for 2020 and his accuracy was likely further boosted by more throws to the RBs. Its easy to forget after his stellar 2020 but he was good, not elite, for 2016 to 2019.

What makes you think Rodgers will remain without an injury. Both teams hoped the QBs in question would stay healthy/recover. Both list that bet in the end.

Yours is, if you favor the odds, a reminder why we would be wise to move on.

If you are holding out for the long odds shot, then not much further out to believe that Love will be the next 15 year franchise QB than it is to think Rodgers can carry a team till he is 42 even with an increased cap impact.

Coldworld - and I agree with Fabio - he may have lost a bit of his velocity - but nothing of his accuracy. All you need to do is to look at his TD passes to Adams and Tonyon last year and his passes to MVS - yes some of them may have made Tonyon and MVS dive on 50 yards but not many. So If you are thinking that GB should cut him because he might get hurt, then the Pats should have cut Brady because he might of gotten hurt. My point is - we do not know what we have in Love. Unlike when we decided to move on from Favre - we knew from 3 years of preseason and real OTA's and mop ups - what we had in AR. Favre still had 3 years left in him ( granted only 2 good years). Now as I have said before and it is a relevant point in this case - AR has only played in 13 seasons as he sat on the bench his first 3. Brees, Brady, E Manning, P Manning, Rivers all played in at least 19 seasons. That lack of wear and tear costs something. So until I see something from Love over the next 2 seasons it is not time to dump a proven comodity. Too many failing organizations have done that over the years.

It’s not just next year. No one argues we would want anyone else and nobody did, It’s the ones after that cause the problem. He’s contracted for two after now, but without guarantees if he is traded or cut (think injured).

Arms go fast. Bodies get more fragile. This is not a question of wear and tear like a running back. QB injuries tend to be sudden. It’s a question of loss of physical capability due to age. That’s a lottery that can happen without injury but is often exacerbated by increasing susceptibility.

If it were a question of this season alone, no one would debate it, but it’s Rodgers wanting guarantees that mortgage the team that is the issue. Particularly so in a cap crunch that will push cap hits back, restricting recruitment, potentially even after he has gone. That is a deal any GM should walk away from, for anyone.

Once again you are ignoring the most relevant points. First off - why are you jumping into he is going to get injured or he is going to get old? Once again - he only has 13 years of playing time on his body and he looks after himself. Brady is what 41?? More likely that AR has the same if not more years left than Brady because of less playing years - Rivers, Brees - 19 playing years. Secondly we have no idea what Love can do. Just look at the much higher picks from a QB perspective over the past 5 years and you will see many who are journeymen at best if not out of the league. As far as the cap hits and cap jail - that happens to all teams and the biggest thing is to avoid a whole bunch of dead money. You sign the guys you can afford and have to let some good players go. They need to get paid and others will come up and get their chance - Like Adams did when Jordy was let go. If AR wants a better deal - he does earn it. And the last 2 years show it - and why will the next 3 at least not show it. The roster is young and set with the exception of Adams. And we won when he was hurt.

It’s got nothing to do with playing time and everything to do with age. The thing is aging saps both ability and resilience and the decline can be sudden or on a curve, but the curve starts slowly and accelerates fast.

I’m not ignoring. There isn’t a point in there I have not addressed and I do not think anything you say represents good odds. What I see is hope and not a lot more. Rodgers has a great deal, just not a guaranteed one. There is a very good reason for that.

Manning's and Brady's last superbowl wins were more about team confidence in QB and great defense, than superior QB performances. If the packers offense didn't choke in the second half, along with going stupid and using the worst of MM's offense with empty backfield (no doubt thanks to Rodgers) + OL injuries, then Brady doesn't even make it to the superbowl. But credit the TB defense for making Rodgers look mortal in both games. It's the defense that won it for them

I will be pissed about the overuse of empty backfield in that game for years. OL injuries, then allow the DL to pin the ears back, there's no chance of a run. Only when they went back to normal offense in the 4th did the offense start to move the ball. But got close to goal line, then back to the idiotic empty backfield.

Side note on what turned into a rant, I hope Stokes and later draft pick CB are all about kicking King (the Bostick award winner) out on the street.

Rodgers got to the Super Bowl in 2010. Since then, Joe Flacco, Colin Kaepernick, Nick Foles, Matt Ryan, Jared Goff, Eli Manning, Cam Newton, and Jimmy Garrapolo have accomplished the same. Manning , Wilson, and Mahomes have done it twice.

No QB has ever gone to the Super Bowl and then returned after a ten year absence.

Lots of things have happened. Doesn’t make them likely. Looking at the odds this one isn’t particularly and, after this year, will hurt badly.

Brady was pretty poor athletically as a QB last year, on a very good team. He might well be the next playing a year too far, or his team might carry him again.

Do you really see this team carrying a mediocre Rodgers next year and retaining Adams, Alexander etc. without a diminishing caliber of supporting talent? The chances are that’s what you are buying and quite probably for a period after he leaves.

Crushing defenses are great, but they aren’t accomplished very often. Trading Rodgers would certainly help get us closer to that. Every Super Bowl we’ve won has featured a HOF QB in his prime and a top defense.

What is true is how many teams have won SBs within so so defenses over the year but with great defenses . The list is replete with the Ravens and Bears etc. etc. ! But I would STILL rather have SB losing qbs Favre and Rodgers over those teams the last 30 years. Someone disagree with me and admit you would rather have had a full year of Hundley and a Superbowl then a season with Favre and Rodgers and another losing NFCCG season!

The Packers have already decided. Aren't you paying attention? The Top 3 in the organization have all stated publicly they want Rodgers back and won't trade him. This isn't even about more money as much as it is Rodgers wants guarantees (in the form of a contract) that he will be in GB. Right now he has no guaranteed money remaining on his contract, so the Packers hold all the cards. Rodgers is simply asserting what leverage he has. Personally I would give him 2 yrs of his 3 under contract in guaranteed money, then see where Rodgers and Love are at after the '22 season.

It IS about money.....he wants financial guarantees that will ensure he’s the Packers QB beyond this season.

The longer this drags on, the less difference I’m seeing between this and Josh Jones. Two players under contract who didn’t want to honor their contract for personal reasons.

How many movie stars do you know that want to spend a significant amount of their time flying into Austin Stuebel Airport then going out to one of Green Bay’s finer restaurants for a burger, cheese fries and a lager?

I swear to you, no amount of money or team control, none of that stuff is what Aaron Rodgers wants. I believe he wants out of Green Bay for his fiancée... simple as that.

As you know from your lead-in... the power of uh... ahem...!!!

I can't understand why this crap is ongoing.. The Packers could have the best team in the NFL.. The Draft went very well. They have most of the players from two 13-3 seasons back. And if Rogers comes back, and has another year like the last two... To go with the rookies available , along with Alexander and his defense back buddies.. Clark will probably have a defense line that make it easier for him. Rogers could have the slot receiver he has been dreaming about. The Smith bros will be kicking ass this up coming year.. With Rogers back under another ohio State center. The Packers offense can keep the defense off the field. and the offense could be great at time control...

Rodgers, round 3 2021 ..... that’s it for wide receivers in the first three rounds … They might’ve traded away third round pick here or there… However for 14 drafts , top 3 rounds.... about 42 picks of star talent… The pack has helped Aaron Rodgers out about 7% of the time… Its Nothing like Peyton Manning’s situation was… Year in and year out The Packers tend to keep excellent coaches who are good at draft And develop… They also do well at developing walk on’s… And they do very well in the draft historically in the middle rounds… And I think they’re fighting for last place in drafting first and second round generally… What if They had gotten one or two great receivers like Davante Adams… Instead of so many that aren’t even in football anymore…

Packers made Rodgers the highest paid QB in the league when they extended him (two years before his contract was up), but you think this is all about pinching pennies?

It's about a plan for succession, and the Packers are following the football addage that it's better too early than too late.

This doesn't align with Rodgers' desire to play into his 40's and only for one team.

That's the crux of the situation and where the two sides are at odds.

BJP, the point remains the content of the messaging has not been disputed by either AR nor the Packers FO. It might not be the lie many wish it to be.

If Aaron Rodgers disputed any kind of notion he didn't want to remain with the Packers, he would have been out front in saying so. Instead, he told Mike Tirico in that he was disappointed that the news report came out... not that it was inaccurate. There was no denial to the Draft Day grenade tossed at GB by Adam Schefter.

The problem in Denver is that they never really bottomed-out. The Broncos probably thought that with a stout OL, good RBs, and a still fine defense they could win with Trevor Siemian or first round pick Paxton Lynch. Sound familiar? They still had 4 legit pro bowlers (three of whom were first team all-pro in 2016).

Instead, the Broncos went 9-7 in 2016, the year after winning the super bowl. That bought them the 20th pick, OT Garrett Boles. They didn't sell Derek Wolfe, Sylvester Williams, Von Miller*, Aquib Talib*, Chris Harris*, Emmanuel Sander or Demaryius Thomas (both had over 1000 receiving yards and were pro bowlers on offense) for two seasons. Then the Broncos went 5-11 and took Bradley Chubb with the 5th pick. Great player, but they passed on Josh Allen and Josh Rosen. QB first, in my book. Chubb is a wonderful player, plus they added Shaquil Barrett, Justin Simmons, so they went 6-10, 7-9, and 5-11.

Passed on Fields in 2020. Not sure what they are doing. It is a passing league. So far they have stayed in no man's land. They have hit on some players and have a pretty good roster, maybe good enough to think AR might put them over the top.

Many should take a cue from this!
I also recognize that when you decide to switch from your Q HOF the risk of all this happening is always real and not always attributable to the choice of GM.
Now, if anything, let's try to imagine the Broncos with AR at the helm ..... Maybe they become SB contenders?
If so, why?
And above all: if with AR we are still SB contenders why do we want to get rid of it?
As Denver demonstrates some teams take years to find their Q .... we have a Top one with another 4 good years and we want to sell it ??? I'm sorry but I struggle to understand, but I will always be ready to change my mind and admit my possible mistake

I think you are right. They are feeling the Broncos are right there, and the one or two players they might lose in deal can be easily replaced w FAs.

It would seem to me that the Packer fans that grew up with Favre and Rodgers might think HOF quarterbacks are an everyday thing, and therefore letting Rodgers go is no big deal.
Those of us that waited the 21 years from Starr until Favre see it differently.
As for the Manning and Brees comparisons, I don't see it. Manning was injured and lost a year BEFORE the Broncos got him, and it was his throwing shoulder, as it was with Brees many years earlier in his Charger days, and he was injured again this past year.
The Broncos knew the risk when they signed Manning, as did the Saints on both occasions, yet they stuck with their guys.
Rodgers is a healthy MVP as of today, and Packers' management is once again saying "to hell with the fans, they'll still be here next year no matter what we do".
Start with Murphy and clean house, rebuild management, not the team.

Hey Houndog, I appreciate your points here, but I look at the whole situation differently.

Have you been to Green Bay? I mean that with respect, but I ask because it is NOT a place ANY movie star would readily embrace. AR just became engaged. The news of his wanting out coincided with that big life changing news from him. Where are the hot spots in Green Bay that are not a bar offering bar food? Ones without a drive thru window?

I really don't see this scenario as that much of a stretch.

Aaron, if you believe any truth to that draft day statement Schefter threw out with enormous confidence, saying it was confirmed by team and league sources Thursday, maybe the Packers really do have ZERO CHOICE in the matter.

Maybe he really is refusing to ever play for the Packers again. That would change a lot, wouldn't you say? Going to throw the entire FO out the window because AR doesn't want to play in GB anymore?

Maybe Murphy, Gutekunst and LaFleur make some great lemonade out of these lemons.

Its always about money. Most players measure respect by the money, guaranteed money. I for one would rather get out of a situation a year early than create a terrible financial situation for years to come. A good team with a good qb can win the SB. A team that depends on one guy is in trouble.

Recall this...Gutekunst gave Rodgers the largest contract in NFL history at the time, in 2018...and Rodgers "lived up to his end of the bargain" with a 6-9-1 season and lobbied behind he scenes to get McCarthy fired.

Of course it wasn't #12s fault. If he called the plays they would have gone to the SB.

Now he wants to build a SB roster as a pseudo GM. After all, future Hall of Famer Jake Kumerow would have been his WR #2 had he been in charge. Jake from Whitewater was cut from the Packers in 2020 and he went on to catch one pass for the Bills last year.

The stingy Packers have only paid Rodgers over $250,000,000 so far. It just is not enough.
