Someone commented under another post , now where will the pass rush come from, maybe Smith, Smith , Gary?

In 2018 Daniels had 2 sacks and 5 QB hits. He wasn't much of a factor in the pass rush. He was more important eating blockers against the run game. But even then he had only 10 solo tackles in 10 games including 1 tackle for loss.

Daniels just wasn't very effective last season. Add in his injuries, age and size, and cap hit and it was time for the Packers to make the move. Gute seems to prefer taller and a little heavier DL.

As for the pass rush, Pettine will make it happen. Thanks, Since '61

A year too early is not better at all. It is a hole, to divert draft capital. The bears and vikes are stacked on D. Green Bay? Just when we were starting to catch up. I still have to trust this was due to health assessment and not just a financial move, and for now trust the team.

Honest and valid points. They have young guys like Lancaster that played well when Daniels went down. Depth and rotation will keep the defensive pressure consistent.

Z Smith & R Gary both can play inside with a hand in the dirt and stand up as an OLB. Z Smith was especially effective playing inside pass rusher.

What I noticed was the prominence given to Lancaster’s name in comments by Packers personnel.

I noticed that as well. He's bigger and will take snaps at NT to allow Clark to play DE/interior rusher more. This should be another small improvement against the run.

I also think this means snaps available for Adams and Gary at DE.

This is a unexpected, bold move. That Guty could not get any trade tells me Daniels has an injury. (still ankle?)

Daniels worthless??

Wonder if his large salary played into that also, can cut a better deal with him now.

wildbill,

You are right. Salary is part of every negotiation, move in the NFL.

It also appears that there is a belief that his foot will hinder him. Big issue for a DL.

Beans! This will be resolved on the field. The packers haven't lost anything in terms of production. The packers are not Family run. They invested in new players. This move was about the future. Signing Clark, and bringing back the Lombardi trophy. Improvements always cost. Daniels was in the way of progress. Were in a turn around mold. The potential for faster, manageable players, is why Gute had to do this. The process always hurts someone. But the money will be better spent on improvement.

Classic overrated Packer that the GB fans think is the best at his position, but largely is nothing more than a JAG at this point in his career. Smart move by Guty. Hope he uses that spare cash to extend Clark. Don't care about Martinez.

Pack Fans need to get used to it.
This is a new regime. -- TT/MM are long gone.
Expect a few more surprises before the Pack demolish da Bears on 9/5/19. -- First the North, then the NFC. --- 2019 is becoming the "Year of the Pack". --- Booyah!!

From my understanding this move was money, age , injury risk and a move to become taller, more athletic front line defense. Proof is in who they drafted and what FA’s they picked up.

It was reported Gutey tried to trade Mike....no takers.

This tells me no one felt he was worth his $8+mil contract and a draft pick or player.

I also think Gutey told Mike he needed to take a pay cut or get cut. Knowing Mike’s growly nature I expect he said adios.

Foot injuries are tough to get over esp. since the force put on them makes healing difficult. The young linemen Adams, and Lancaster make it easier to release Daniels. Doesn't mean Daniels doesn't still have a couple of good years left, but for the money....the decision seems to have been made months ago.

Wish we could have received something in return but trust that Gute explored all options. Daniels is getting to the age where production starts to dip and injuries increase. Wish him all the best, sure he’ll land somewhere soon.

Explosive impact plays is the preferred style of Pettine. If you are always effecting the ball with pass rush, physical contact and showing presence around it.
The way you do that is with speed and length, the scheme puts players into play making roles. This defense is aggressive and for real!!

don't want to speak for the general fan, but i think folks liked Daniels for his growl and get after it impact-he was a leader and motivator. Agree it was time..GB appears to have some younger depth on Dline; Gutey doing exemplary job as he's said FA & draft for the future...perhaps they were seeing how MD was progressing (remember we didn't see much (anything?) of him in OTA's or mini TC). We all wish Mike Daniels well, he was a fiery Packer!
