Packers Work Out Stecker, Five Linebackers

The Green Bay Packers worked out Green Bay native Aaron Stecker on Tuesday in addition to five linebackers.

Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports on Twitter:

Injury ravaged Packers worked out 5 LBs today and also RB Aaron Stecker.

Stecker grew up in the Green Bay area and played his high school ball at Ashwaubenon.

According to a report from Tom Ziemer of the Wisconsin State Journal this past April, Stecker retired from football after an 11-year career. He was 34-years old at the time of the article

The Green Bay native won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in 2003. Stecker has 386 career carries for 1,526 rushing yards and 166 catches for 1,175 yards.

The Packers reportedly showed interest in having Stecker in for a workout year ago, but he signed with the Atlanta Falcons with whom he appeared in nine games.

Running back continues to be a tenuous position for the Packers despite their best rushing performance of the season last week against the Washington Redskins.

The Packers reportedly showed interest in trading for now Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch a week ago but wouldn't exceed the offer made by the Seahawks. The Packers also showed a year ago that they weren't scared to sign a veteran running back a season ago when they signed Ahman Green at mid-season.

I would much rather see Deshawn Wynn come back than a washed up Stecker signed

Hey, I played running back in grade school. . . circa 1964 - can I have a shot?

The Packers are likely more interested in Stecker as a kick returner than a running back.

I'm not entirely sure why Stecker would get a workout. He's going to be 35 next month! Like D.D. said above, maybe as a kick returner? That still doesn't make a whole bunch of sense because Stecker didn't do a lot of KR the last few years of his career. Even so...won't it be like having Ahman Green back there returning kicks last year?
