Packers Vs. Vikings: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Vikings game without the benefit of a rewatch.

...

The Packers are clearly going with a two-headed punch at running back today. Ty Montgomery gets the start, Aaron Jones takes over on the second series.

Everything that could possibly go wrong, has. And by that, that means Aaron Rodgers leaving the game.

The Packers will need to lean on a heavy rushing attack now more than ever without Rodgers. The tandem of Ty Montgomery and Aaron Jones has never been more important.

Justin Vogel's worse punt of the season couldn't have come at a better time. This football team is imploding in Minnesota.

It's going to be great when a healthy Aaron Rodgers returns to this very same stadium in Minnesota for Super Bowl 52.

Playing cornerback in the NFL is virtually impossible. Seems like 93 percent of all deep passes end up in defensive pass interference calls.

In no situation should the Packers have Josh Hawkins and Lenzy Pipkins on the field at the same time, but that's where they're at right now halfway into the second quarter.

Being down by four at halftime without Aaron Rodgers is a credit to the coaching staff.

Broken right collarbone for Aaron Rodgers. Packers announce he's likely to miss the rest of the season, and that's all she wrote.

It felt right this season. Aaron Rodgers seemed more relaxed than ever, he was beginning to pick up steam and play at a high level. Now, it's over.

2017 is in the hands of Brett Hundley now and a Dom Capers-coached defense.

This season is going to be a tough one, so buckle up. All may depend on whether or not surgery is needed for Rodgers' collarbone.

I'd type out every single injured player the Packers are currently housing, but that might take a long time. Incredible that this team is only losing by 10.

A miserable day in Minnesota is capped off. The bye week can't come fast enough.

I know it shocking to loose Aaron Rodgers and it messes with the game plan. But MM utterly failed to set up Hundley for success and put himself at risk of lossing both QBs. I've been worried about when he would revert back to McStubborn and he picked a terrible time. I just hope we get the McCarthy who game planned for Flynn against New England next week instead of McStubborn.

What would you have wanted him to do differently?

Running game wasn't productive. He called successive screen plays that Hundley over/underthrew. The O line was a shambles. When fate throws the book at you sometimes you just gotta take your lumps now, regroup, and try again another day.

Bring in a guy who hasn't played ANY meaningful NFL snaps and always gets backup reps in practice. OL is shot. Facing one of the more aggressive defensive units on the road and with a deficit. Not a recipe for success.

Prior to the start of the season, I think most of us would've looked at the schedule and said, "4-2 after 6 games (with road games against Atlanta, Dallas and Minn)? I'll take that." So the current position, record-wise, isn't troubling. But the fact that QB1 is done and we have no idea what to expect from QB2 next week gives us little reason for hope. On the other hand, what to they have to lose? Open it up, play loose, and let the chips fall.

Are they going to be able to practice enough guys to get any meaningful reps this week?

I don't blame Huntley at all it just seemed MM kept trying to run the ball. Let Huntley wing it, didn't have anything to lose anyway. And the Oline I don't know what to say about that. What rotten luck. When will the injuries end? Same with the D. They may have to empty the practice squad to have enough players next game.

I'm trying not to think how wide open the NFC is right now and how we were in a great position to get our bye. ATL is no juggernaut. We'd have beaten MN today with a regular AR performance.

At 5-1 with AR it would have just been a waiting game until the roster could heal with a bye week on the horizon.

They do need to open it up.

I lived in Dallas when the Packers played the Cowboys multiple times in the 1990s. Aikman was injured for one particular game and Jason Garrett was his backup.

Aikman convinced the coaching staff to run the same game plan as if he was playing. Garrett turned in an excellent performance and Dallas beat Green Bay...AGAIN!

MM should do the same with Hundley. If he's as good as the GB coaching staff says, with a week of practice as the #1 QB, we should see better play from the offense overall.

Of course, that also means getting a semi-healthy o-line so Hundley doesn't get killed back there.

There is an exhaustive list of things he could have tried but didn't. From bootlegs, to rollouts, to jet/fly sweeps, to options, to WR formations and screens designed to help a QB under fire. They used almost none of them, stayed with 5 steps drops and the same old route concepts where is a bazillion hours of tape on, and the Vikings where stuffing.

Had the feeling that as soon as #12 went down, MM was already looking toward next week and seeing what #7 could do within the basic offense. Nothing creative on offense, nothing for NO to look at on film. They stopped trying to win on offense, and for that, I give the defense credit for keeping it within 2 scores.

No Jeremy. No no no. With that patchwork o-line, those calls and that part of the playbook went out the window. It isn't that MM was reluctant, it's that he didn't have a line up to par with those calls. Have you heard of #74 John? Best way to roll out Hundley was to his right...at John. That's not happening and didn't happen.

I only disagree with one point Zachary. Why run the ball, when your team is missing its best run blockers, playing with 2nd and 3rd string Olineman, and going against one of the top front 7 in the league?

I hope the coaches (and TT) recognize it's time for ALL to step-up. All is not lost, but attention to detail is required.
I am fed-up with Bennett's lack of focus & predictable play calls by the offense. Overshadowed, was some exceptional early play by Kenny Clark & Martinez.

"Capers plan just isn't working."

Might not have been pretty, defensively, but if #12 survived this game, it was very winnable. It was still winnable WITHOUT #12. Defense did enough to keep it close when, at one point, the first downs were something like 18-5. Get after Capers if you want, but the defense didn't lose this game.

The defense created 10 points for the offense this game through turnovers. Would like to have seen it more stout, but playing with out Burnett, King, Brooks, Thomas & House, does not help, as well as a less than 100% Daniels & Perry.

I am curious what others are seeing with Dial. Seems to show up for a play or two then disappears. Twice this game he was blown off the hole.

What's up with these season ending projections for Rodgers' injury. Unless my math is wrong we have 9 weeks left of the season. And having had 3 broken collarbones and Rodgers previous I'm pretty familiar with the recovery time that's about 6 weeks give or take. That should give him 2 games or so left. Or is it bad enough to keep him out longer? With the line in shambles though I'm not sure we'll be able to tread water anyway. Hope they pull it together some how.

Even if we didn't have ALL these damn injuries, the ONLY ONE who can overcome McCarthy and Capers coaching is Aaron Rodgers.

WHEN will the Packers change out this trainers staff. WAY to many soft issue injuries on this team. After 5 or 6 years of the same ole crap SOMETHING needs to change.

I miss Josh Sitton and TJ Lang, Casey Hayward too. I'll bet John Dorsey wouldn't have let ALL 3 walk.

I think simple evolution is at work as well, both physically and within the culture of the game.

Players are simply bigger, stronger and faster these days. Remember William Perry for the Bears? Back in that time, he was a novelty--a 300 lb player. He was rather flabby at that. These days, every OL is 300 or more, some significantly more. And while some are as flabby many as not. Its like that at every single level of the game.

Further, back in the day, players would take offseason jobs. When pay increased to make that unnecessary, they just took the offseason as a vacation. Either way, they would come to TC and then start to get in football shape. Now, the player that isn't spending March-June training for TC is not likely to make a roster. They have to come into camp in peak condition or risk someone taking their job. As a result, in addition to being bigger, they are stronger and faster, too.

So there is more mass at greater speed colliding on each and every play. It stands to reason that the human body is not as capable of surviving that gauntlet injury-free.

The body must be trained to take the impact, or it will break. Teams are limited in how much pad time they get. If you can figure out how to train these guys for contact without it you can make millions.

The season is not lost. Give the coaches a week to game plan with Hundley. Let's see what they come up with. You maybe surprised. Coming into a game with little or no reps is not a fair measure of what he can do. Injuries to the O line are more of a concern . It would be helpful if Bennett could catch the ball and block a db on a blitz. We are 4 and 2 and tied for first place. We have time to adjust.

The Packers have 10 games to showcase Hundley for an offseason trade. 10 games to work on integrating their young defenders into the defense as a whole. Plus any other number of reasons to watch. I will continue to do so. And hope the best. I'll just adjust my expectations when watching.

It's bad enough Rodgers is out. But throw in both tackles, starting guard, half the secondary - who else did I miss?

It might be just too much to ask, but I'd like to see Hundley kick some ass.

It's not just the Packers. It's week 6 and the NFL is without (arguably) their best DL (JJ Watt), RB (David Johnson), QB (Aaron Rodgers) and WR (OBJ).

It seems counter-intuitive that less contact in practice mandated by the CBA is leading to more injuries, but until we know why, I don't think anything can be ruled out.

I've always wondered if this isn't simply a case of the modern evaluation techniques. Even in the 80s, a guy had bad knees, you wrapped them tighter and he went back in. A guy "got his bell wrung," he sat out a series and was back in. You think Bulaga wouldn't have been back in if this was 1987 instead of 2017?

I think we're getting the same number of injuries as ever. It's just that we are much more conscious of player safety.

And let's be honest. That's a good thing. It totally sucks when your O-line is in the locker room, but it is a good thing.

This is correct Caruso, but it is more than that. The speed and strength of the players is so much more than what it used to be and the requirements are ever increasing. Take cornerbacks for instance, they are required to run, pivot, and leap like a gazelle, but tackle guys who run 4.4-4.6 forties and are as much as 40-70 pounds heavier than them (think RBs and TEs here).

I am not sure what to think regarding our O-line, except a string of bad luck and some with a propensity to certain injuries that we need to be careful with.

Great observation, Caruso81.

No doubt that the "rub some dirt on it" mentality through out the game (players, coaches, trainers, medical staff) is being replaced by images of ex-players in their 50s and beyond with demetia or unable to walk or whatever other long-term effect playing football has shown.

While some fans of the game enjoy the gladiator aspect of it, I am not one of them. These guys deserve to be able to play with their kids and grand kids after their careers are over. So I applaud the changing emphasis on player safety. it can be frustrating at times to watch. But it is becoming less frustrating every year as hits like the one Trevathan laid on Adams are ingrained into my memory.

The Packers were down to zero healthy reserves at OL at the end of the game. While many may want to blank out the end of the NFC CG game last year, we saw them forced to use a DL on the OL due to injury. They were either out or close to being out of having enough DBs, today.

I don't want to see LBs manned up on WRs, lumbering TEs trying to shake nimble DBs or linemen on the opposite side of the ball for which they are trained. It's just not entertaining. As I type, I'm watching NASCAR at Talladega (which I hate) and it seems like a nice analogy...a contest that is not decided by which team is the best but by which team can avoid catastrophe that is no fault of their own.

It's not just the Packers and it seems to be happening more frequently than in years past.

This is a legitimate problem that the league must address. I have no idea how. But I think a meaningful expansion of both the regular roster and gameday roster would seem to be a nice first step, along with opening up IR rules to be in line with other leagues, where it is used as a temporary parking spot for injured players. They have to do something to stop the comments like "Does (team X) have enough players at (position Y) to finish the game?"

I very much agree on the increased roster. 53 is a joke for the number of injuries teams have been sustaining over the past 10 seasons or so. Teams can’t keep adequate replacement depth at every position. And, if they use a couple spots on the 53 to protect development players the situation is even worse. I would think 60 player rosters would be more realistic.

Also, the PUP and IR rules are nuts. Why does a player need to be on PUP all offseason to be eligible? Not certain, but think a player has to end the previous season on IR to be eligible for the PUP in the offseason. I think they have the two sort of reversed. I would think after 6 weeks any player placed on IR should be eligible to return to practice and be eligible to be activated during a four week window. Then be placed on the roster, released, or season ending PUP. And I would only allow players to be added to the IR list after the first game. This would help prevent teams from stashing guys on IR during final cutdowns.

PUP would be open to players injured before the final TC roster cuts. I would allow them to return to practice for 2 weeks anytime after the 8th week. If they are not activated to the roster after 2 weeks, they would need to be released or put on a season ending PUP. I would have a 4 player limit on PUP so it can not be abused for stashing players prior to cut-downs.

If they made these changes, they could possibly eliminate the Practice Squads. Although, I would suggest reducing the PS to 6. And use it more like a tryout squad. Maybe even putting 30 day time limits on the players. Then teams would have to choose between the 60 man roster or release the player. It would create a form of musical chairs for the PS guys, moving from team to team. But also motivate teams to promote a PS player to the roster vs releasing him.

Non of this will happen, but I wish it would.

I can offer no statistical "proof" but it seems to me that today's "bigger, stronger, faster" players inflict more punishment than ever before, while at the same time, this condition of being "big, strong, and fast" does not improve their ability to absorb the punishment.
And I have no idea how to "legislate" any of it.

My first impression is that I will have more time to spend with my grandchildren for the upcoming 11 Sundays remaining in the NFL season.
Not including the injury to Aaron Rodgers I have never seen a team absorb as many injuries as the Packers have and now with Rodgers gone I'm not even sure the Packers can field a team for next week's game.
Those of you who are blaming Capers defense remember that Hundley through 2 picks that resulted in 10 points for the Vikings. Which means the defense could have held the Vikings to 13 points. The Packers would have been held to 0 without the fumble recovery and return by CM3 and without the pick by Randall.
It doesn't seem fair to blame the coaches when you lose your starting QB, and 3 OLs plus losing 2 more CBs during the game after coming into the game without a starting CB and safety. The OL became a complete shambles during the game and we were lucky that Hundley was not injured as well.
As for going forward Hundley will get better with a full week of practice and then go into the bye with more time and reps. However, unless the OL heals up it may not matter. Our secondary needs to heal up as well.
The season is not over by any means but nothing is certain for now and may not be for quite a while.
Thanks, Since '61

Problem stats: 24 first downs, 7 rush, 13 pass, 4 penalty. 0 sacks! time 32mins. penalties 8- 92yds. What's the answer? Time to start looking at the stats AGAIN. Not who left the game.

Stats are the result of who plays in the game.
Our defense is not a great defense when they are 100% healthy. How well do you expect them to play when they are short at least 4 players in the secondary as the game went on.
The Vikes scored 10 points off of turnovers. Take that away and the Vikings score 13 points. That's not bad for any defense in today's NFL. However to be fair we should remove the Packers 10 points which they scored off of turnovers.
what did you expect to happen when Rodgers went down and the Packers were playing on the road against the best defense in their division and maybe the best in the NFC? Thanks, Since '61

From the start I expected a defensive Battle. Many called the score to be tight. 0 sacks!! (Thats the biggest stat.) #2 The penalties gave them momentum, and got them off to a faster start. With their backs to the end zone the DL collapsed. The Vikings dominated the lines. Yes Clark and company made some splash plays. But the vikings won the game in the trenches.

Of course they won the game in the trenches. Their DL is better than our patchwork OL and their OL has been revamped and improved this season.
If our OL is healthy and Rodgers isn't injured it's a completely different game. Injuries are not an excuse but they are a reality. Regardless, I mentioned in my post on reasons why the Packers would win or lose three factors why the Packers could lose this game:
They beat themselves with stupid penalties, poor tackling and an ineffective pass rush. After Rodgers went down all three of those factors happened throughout the rest of the game. Thanks, Since '61

I would point out that there were many on this board who were challenging why some of the other posters were so particular on keeping (or not) certain players, and acquiring others. Maybe the light has gone on? We store players who do not deserve a roster spot, or who are not ready to play, instead of planning for something like this and adding depth to key positions.

While trying to field a team, the Packers will be needing to make some crucial roster decisions over the next few weeks due to injuries, and guys scheduled to come off of PUP. Can they wait for their IR'd Olinemen to return? Can they continue to Park a 3rd string RB and OT, as wells as Adams on the roster and make them inactive most games?

Even getting a higher draft pick is no silver lining for Packer fans because we have Ted Thompson as our GM, who still thinks AJ Hawk at pick #5 was one of his greatest picks of all time, nosing out HaHa Clinton-Dix at pick 25.

The only silver lining I see is that the homer fans, including Mark Murphy, get to see the emperor has no clothes on when we go winless the rest of the season or close to it. Maybe then everyone will realize that we need a new front office at 1265. I think new coaches and a new GM could make a big difference in our fortunes in a relatively short period of time, say 1-3 years. Of course, you need to pick the right people. John Dorsey would make a good choice for GM.

This offensive line was a ticking timebomb on Rodgers' health, but surprisingly, I wouldn't blame the OL on the play he got injured.

I think the season is over because Hundley is not going to be able to cover for lack of defense and bad coaching. What can you do with a coach that that has 3 backup OL and backup QB, but refuses to help that situation much. It was a jailbreak on Hundley. From here on out, given the OL health, teams are going to blitz like crazy. Heck, they don't even really need to blitz. I kind of doubt Hunley makes it through the season too.

I have always thought MM is just beneficiary of Rodgers, and now he gets to prove me wrong. This team had issues stopping the Vikings, and it's going to get ugly against the Saints next week without Rodgers scoring on +75% of the possessions.

"From here on out, given the OL health, teams are going to blitz like crazy."

If the Packers are smart, from here on out--or at least until #7 gets his legs under him--they're going to try to play some smashmouth football. This can't be the same offense for a few weeks, if at all. Put 2 TEs on the field, maybe go to the 3-man backfield, but put extra blockers out there and run the ball. Use play action. Is that what this team was built to do? No...but this isn't THAT team anymore, and expecting Hundley to throw for 300+ and 3 TDs every week is a recipe for 4-12.

I agree. I thought MM tried running a bit more, but then he also failed to help the tackles, and did not call a roll out once. Then they were like 1 for 4 or 5 on screen plays.

I couldn't disagree more. Time to find out if Hundley can wear his big boy pants. If not, Plan B should be to go with Kaepernick. But, for him to be up to speed in our system we need to sign him now. Joe Callahan is a laughable option as our Plan B. Taysom Hill maybe but not Joe Callahan. Kap has performed at the highest level in his chosen profession and is still in his prime. Not long ago he schooled MM/DC on how to play QB in this league. What is this man's great crime against society? That he has the courage to protest the greatest outrage in our society today, cops killing unarmed people of color. To oppose him for standing up against racial injustice is or should be unAmerican. How can so many turn this argument upside down? First Amendment folks.

It's ok to disagree, but I am not sure what you are disagreeing with. To ignore Hundley's newness to the role, and pretend like he is Rodgers is to play into failure. He doesn't have the experience, and that means blitz blitz blitz until a QB can prove he can handle it.

I think the only QB that would work for the packers is a very mobile QB, and Kaepernick fits that. I have no issues with the kneeling and sitting. I don't see Kaepernick as good enough to cover GB's weakness on defense. I think Kaepernick is about the only external QB that could survive with GB's OL.

Let the in season development of Hundley begin. My first instinct is to let it all fly and see what he can do but that requires having enough capable healthy players to keep him from getting killed. Could things be any worse? I don't think so. Can't even shift my attention to the defense improving, because they are hurting too. Let's see what MM can do with this mess.

1) Officiating....helmet to helmet on a defenseless player. Should have been an ejection of Treadwell. I also counted 6 non call holdings ...Martinez and Clay were being held all game long. 1 of 2 PI's was not a PI. The non catch that was ruled a catch when Theilands elbow was out of bounds was ridiculous.

2) McCarthy ...you have a green QB and a bunch of tight ends... For the love of God why would you not use a double tight end set??

3) Yes, other teams have Injuries, lose a QB etc.. But other teams can at least run the ball and field an adequate defense. Rodgers does in fact cover inadequacies.

4)The last time this happened, Lacy still ran the ball well with crap QB play from Tolzien. If we had good to great RB's our corners wouldn't be on the field as much. McCarthy and Thompson had to have known there was a GLARING need for a true RB. I could be wrong, Ive been wrong before.

5) Ive said this before but I believe a 4-3 cover 2 or a 4-3 in general would make Green Bay less injurie prone. Asking corners to rush lineman and fill gaps to tackle RBs when they are built for running stride for stride with WRs is asking too much. Yes of course it's football and that's their job but instead of an occasional task, in Capers system it's an every down affair. I don't like the way he runs a 3-4.

Also, I want to thank you for ruining my enjoyment of watching the best ever QB.

I'm still with Packers. I will lose my nervs and I will be sad after many games, but I will cheer for Packers and organization no matter what.

I hope D will finally come to life in the next few games. I believe Packers have excellent players and they will keep Packers in the battle for postseason...

I think the NFL is going to have to change the rule about a QB being a free target when out of pocket. Most get out of pocket a lot, specially newer, younger QBs.

I think the NFL will see AR's hit as a $$$ problem when viewership by casual fans of Packer's games drops off because the star is out of game.

AR is out of pocket, throws the ball, LB sees that and knows technically he doesn't have to avert hit or slow down with his hit. Lowers his head and plants his helmet on AR's shoulder and drives his helmet to the ground crushing a shoulder.
Think about it, a 220 lb guy helplessly stationery getting hit by a 260 lb guy running 20 mph. That's as bad as being hit by a pickup truck moving 20 mph.

Then my worst nightmare happened and AR went down. I'm beyond bummed, but I will still watch my beloved Packers and maybe good things will happen. It's life.
