Packers Vs. Lions: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Lions game. The Battle for the NFC North CHampionship.

...

#Packers daring #Lions to run early with a bunch of Thomas and Burnett at ILB.

Damarious Randall per Al Michaels: "The Scorchee"

So what is it about their own left sideline that the Packers secondary can't cover receivers down it?

Opposing offenses surely lick their chops on third and long vs. the Packers' defense.

You 100% knew the Packers would switch running backs on the series after Ripper scored a TD, didn't you?

I don't enjoy football nearly as much when the referees try to determine the outcome.

First half turned into the battle of Zach Zenner &. Aaron Ripkowski - who'd a thunk it?

Collingsworth talking about how Slay had Nelson bottled up in first half. They show each play. Nelson was open on almost every one, just didn't get the targets.

Right after that, Nelson catches three passes on a TD drive. Nice analysis Chris.

Lions receivers running like antelopes on the range - wild and free...

Give credit to Detroit fans. The crowd noise had the OL jumping early all night.

For the Packers to be successful, this defense has to create some turnovers - becaue they surely aren't shutting anyone down.

I said at halftime, just let Rodgers throw the ball at will. Best chance for them to win. Or as Corey Behnke once famously said, "Why run when you can win?"

Geronimooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Man, Kentrell Brice never fails to make a guy sorry they ran into his area with the ball.

I swear I called the Rodgers bootleg to myself. really. No, really. Of course, it's probably the 30th time I've called for a bootleg. Finally got one.

Linebackers just bounce off Ty Montgomery. Not cornerbacks, I said LINEBACKERS.

Bolden the perfect receiver type for Burnett to have to cover one-on-one. It's actually a good matchup for the Packers,

Green Bay, here I come!

1 game at a time! Just win!

I don't care what anyone says. Rodgers deserves to be the MVP. There is no one hotter then Rodgers right now.

I have bashed Hyde a lot. He proves me wrong again. That was the unofficial dagger.

I really like how Allison catches the ball. He catches everything with his hands.

Montgomery the 225 lb RB, completely making the LB miss in the hole! We haven't had a RB do that in a long time! And Ripkowski, is truly a beast.

Definitely a great day to be a Packer fan! Winning the division, getting a home game in the playoffs.

I love my Packers!

Is Geronimo Allison the next Jarrett Boykin? Would hope not, guy could save us a draft pick, and we need those to get some new corners. Besides that, this team is on a roll.

I actually had the same thought, and posted it at my regular forum. But right now, if Allison can give the Packers some quality play, that's all that matters. I'll worry about his long term viability later. Right now, another table has been set. And the Packers are hungry.

I don't think he is the next Boykin. At least not the bad Boykin.

I really like what I have seen from Allison. I like how he catches the ball. He may not be the fastest but he knows how to get open and uses his size really well. He can jump and reach to high point the ball really well.

I actually think that if the Packers get numbers out of Allison like they did out of Boykin (57 career catches for about 650 yards), that's not too bad for a UDFA in a relatively deep group of pass-catchers. Not a bad return on the investment.

Except for the penalties the Packers played a solid game. Still can't believe that CM3 dropped that pick in the 2Q. Rodgers brilliant again with a serious case for MVP. Loved using RIP in the first half. Not necessarily pretty but the Packers defense hung tough as all the CBs went down. Monty made a big difference in the second half. I hoped that the Packers would keep Allison and he is proving to be a valuable contributor and a solid #4 WR at least. Congratulations to the Packers and us fans, NFC North champions and 8 consecutive playoff seasons. Great job by MM no matter what comes next. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Yeah, the only thing I think still "in play" may be the waiver route and everybody in front of the Packers would have to pass. Then what is the incentive for the holding team anyways? The only thing I can think of, is if a team was not serious about resigning a "vested veteran". These players become instant free-agents upon being waived, but then again, what is the incentive for the holding team to release early?

I don't agree, RC, but I may be out of date. I believe a team can sign FA practice squad players from other teams, street FAs, but not players who will be FAs in 2017 because the league year isn't over yet and they're still under contract. Teams can promote PS players from its own squad as well. I not so sure but seem to think that a team is limited to 4 FA transactions. There have been quite a few players who played in the postseason without ever in the entire career having played in a regular season game.

Somehow held the Lions down long enough to pull away, garbage-time TD aside. ARod should be in the MVP discussion (but I think Matt Ryan wins it).

Must get healthy for the Giants next week, but remember they were short-handed in the secondary for the Giants earlier in the year. Giants were not playing as well on the defensive side of the ball at that point though.

1-0 this week. On to the playoffs as NFC Norris Champs!

Agree Al, I would add:
Our LBs played very tough tonight. Hate it when we are not up-tempo...I feel it causes some of our penalty issues and we seem to bog-down. Cook was important early, some key pass plays to him and Monty. Would love to see Michael on a screen play. Adams athleticism is demonstrated late & Geronimo's clutch catches sooooo important. Arod missed Geronimo twice on that in and out corner pattern, hit on it once, but he was open each time. What was our average yards per run? O-line deserves lots of praise, but struggled early in pass protection. Rip, and later Monty, shredded their D, but really this was again, AROD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Playoffs here we come! Few thoughts:

Man, don't know if he can cover at all, but watching Brice hit someone is very satisfying. Maybe he should be playing the hybrid ILB role next season.
-Allison has proved the preseason wasn't a fluke. Also, Adams is great at getting YAC.
-Hope Rollins is okay. Regardless of his play, he seems like a good young man.
-That said, Chuck, Al, you'd guys wanna play ball?

6 in a row and division champs!!!

In the first half the team looked like the one that lost 4 in a row. They kept missing chances with drops and penalties. You just knew after Matthews drops the pick 6 that Detroit was getting a TD on that drive.

But in the second half they really came out and produced. It is sad in a way that the defense looks better when playing their safeties at corner, but maybe they should stick with it and play Ha-Ha and Brice at safety and Burnett and Hyde at corner more often.

Kudos to Ty Montgomery. In the first half they ran a screen to the left, and Montgomery went right, and that was the last play he saw in the first half. Then when he finally gets back in he hobbles off on a hurt foot or ankle or something. And then he has a TD pass go right through his hands. But he kept his mind focused and was a big time runner in the game clinching drive. Great job keeping his mind on the game and giving some good plays down the stretch.

I was at that game in 2007...so cold that the guy in front of us couldn't finish his beer before it froze (mmm....beer slushies!). All they can do is go play. Giants are not a dynamic offense...the Packer secondary can't allow them to become one.

I still think the Packers are the favorites.

Remember, the Giants aren't clicking right now. They lost to the Eagles and then scored a measly 13 points on offense yesterday. (The defense scored a cheap TD on last play of the game.)

I would also add...though not technically in the playoffs both teams were in must win situations in Week 16 during the 2010 season. GB beat the tar out of the Giants in Lambeau.

The pass pro combined with Rodgers pocket presence, along with and a mix and match of fresh and best of all productive ball carriers is hard to stop! Get pressure on Eli or go home in round one vs Giants! Go Pack!

1. It's good to see so many Packer fans confident in their team again. I think I'll start posting more.

2. I don't want to talk about anything other than Rodgers and that TD pass to Geronimo. Is there any -- ANNNNNNNY -- other QB in the league that makes that pass? After the pass and catch, the swag -- that's the Rodgers we are all accustomed to. If we get THAT Rodgers in the Playoffs - I don't give a damn who we play, where we play, who our starting CBs are, or anything else regarding the game. He's a problem.

Almost every top QB can make that throw. Only question is how consistent is their play and AR is playing great right now. The D is the problem and has been since week 5. Can our offense score more than our defense gives up for 4 more games against the best teams in the league? At least we are a scary hot team to play now. The good thing is that there is no shutdown defense this year, though the Giants D is playing well. So it is a bit exciting. One week at a time...

It wasn't so much the accuracy of Arods pass to G-Mo(which in itself was nice), but the velocity that impressed me. Just a flick of the wrist and it goes from point A to B in the blink of an eye.

Maybe a top pitcher in baseball can do that but not many others in this world ... and a pitcher doesn't have a 300 pound kamikaze bearing down on him.

@Mojo Exactly!!!! That TOO! Man, I went over so many videos of yesterday's games and the passes from QBs on the run are NOTHING like Rodgers'. Nothing. Let's also throw in the fact that Rodgers (who is right handed) was fading left and throwing left. Rodgers has that move mastered. If there was a highlight of his greatest throws I bet On The Run throws would take up majority of the slots.

Agree, Drealyn. AR is the most accurate passer I've ever seen on the run. It may be that other good QBs can make that throw, but not as often and without tossing a bunch of INTs. We expect AR to make that throw.

@Reynoldo

I wouldn't even expect other QBs to attempt most of the throws Rodgers make. I don't think there are many QBs out there with the arm strength, and if there are a handful out there with the arm strength - they don't have the accuracy to go with it.

Other good QBs might could make a similar throw. Maybe like, going left with only 2 people (receiver and defender) on the left side of the End Zone with no threat of a Safety mirroring his moves trying to jump in front of his pass. But that pass to Geronimo? Nahhhh. I'd have to see a video of that.

EDIT: I just watched the video of (2015) Rodgers running right and throwing to James Jones in the back of the Vikings end zone and a single tear rolled down my face. Hahahaha!

Allison may have had 3 of the biggest plays in the game.
-The long completion before half time. Let's not forget the Packers had 23 seconds. Not a lot of time to move the ball about 40 yards. That play set up the FG to bring the game within 4 at half.
-The deep throw on the left sideline on a 2nd and long play. Was a big play at that moment of the game.
-The TD. That was a very hard catch to make, and he made it. That throw to him showed how much trust Rodgers has in him.

Heard someone say that Rodgers is throwing the quick rhythm passes when needed and bolting the pocket when needed. I agree.

To me his decision making has been the most significant difference between the four game losing streak and what they've done since then.

He held the ball too long too often earlier this season, but now he's willing to let it rip. He's running when he needs to and his accuracy seems better.

He's not the sole reason the team ran the table, but he has to be about 90% of it. His recent play has exceptional and with this D, I don't think this team wins more than two of the past six without it.

Now I want him to state they could win the next four.

I am a little surprised that Detroit got as much consistent pressure against our OL as they did. The stats show just 4 QB hits and 1 sack (we had 4 QB hits and 2 sacks), but Detroit's pressure was considerably better. Given that Detroit's starting OC and RT were out, our pressure was disappointing, even if we did have a help out the secondary scheme.

I was pleased with Joe Thomas, at least overall. He made a nice open field tackle on Zenner, whose forward progress ceased when Thomas made the hit, despite Zenner having a full head of steam. Thomas was up and down in coverage, and I am not opposed to looking for help at ILB during the offseason, but I think there is a place on the team for guys like Thomas. I've been critical of Hyde, but the same goes for him, though in Hyde's case it will be a balancing act between his salary demands and what he brings to the team.

"I am a little surprised that Detroit got as much consistent pressure against our OL as they did."

I'd like to see the breakdown on how many times they sent more than 4 rushers last night. They seemed to be sending extra guys a lot...especially in the second half.

The breakdown at CB might force the Packers to bring Hyde back. They're going to need secondary depth next year as they look at the play of some of these guys in the offseason.

I previously suggested re-signing Hyde for something like Guion money ($3.68M AAV) and structure ($333K dead money year 2, $167K dead year 3), and got some pushback from some who did not want him back at all. I view Hyde as the kind of depth FA vet, not expensive but useful type many on this site talk about, even if he is a re-signing rather than coming from another team.

During the course of the game, the Packers lost three corners: D. Randall, Q. Rollins and M. Dorleant. By the end of the game, they were lining up cornerback Ladarius Gunther on the right, safety/utility man Micah Hyde on the left, and true safety Morgan Burnett covering the slot. So the one true corner that they were able to put on the field was a second year undrafted free agent that many people didn't think would make the team and was playing with a sore elbow.

The Lions are a good passing team. They are 11th in the league in passing yards. And despite this, the Packers gave up 10 points in the second half, seven of them coming on a last minute prayer while down by 2 touchdowns.

People can bash Capers if they want to. But before you do, share the wisdom. What would a GOOD coach have done?

I'm with you on this. I remember few days ago some predictions that Lions will score, what, about 50 points on Packers secondary, That Stafford will torch Packers cornerbacks and so on. Well he did, he got 347 yards through air, but only 2 TD (and one INT!)... This is Lions receivers: G. Tate - 6 for 77 and 1 TD with longest reception of 24, M. Jones - 5 76 0 30, E. Ebron- 6 61 0 19, A. Boldin - 4 57 1 35T, Z. Zenner - 4 41 0 16 and T. Jones - 1 35 0 35... So, no WR with 100 yards? Ouch, Our DB were torched! QB Rating of Matt Stafford - 96.29!

I largely agree with Marpag. Capers should get credit for us holding Detroit to 20 points given the state of the secondary. [Mentally, I give credit to Detroit for the 17 points they scored plus 3 more for the missed the chip shot FG, and nothing for the hail mary TD, though of course that counts. The actual score was 24 points.] I give credit to Hyde for making a tough INT, but don't blame Stafford too much since it was 3rd and 4 at the GB 15 yd line with 1:35 to go down 14 points: Stafford has to make something happen fast, but he was in 4 down territory so he should not have made such a bad throw on 3rd down and just thrown it away if necessary.

Not sure what the definition of torched is. Croat, all 5 of the those Detroit receivers would be happy to average those types of numbers. 76 and 77 yds/game makes you a 1200+ yard receiver. 61 yds makes Ebron a 976 yd TE. 57 makes Boldin a 912 yard possession receiver. 41 makes Zenner a 656 yd receiver as a primary RB. The yards/reception are all good for their respective positions. I also counted 6 explosive plays allowed, and a 7th on which Stafford overthrew a wide open receiver. Spreading the ball around to 4 or 5 guys so that no one receiver gets 100 yards doesn't mean that the secondary wasn't abused.

Verdict: The corners got abused, but the defense did not. Credit Capers and the players.

My first impression of this game... That last TD drive by the Packers was a thing of beauty. It may be the best TD drive I’ve ever seen orchestrated by Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy.

It was accomplished in the 4th quarter at the most critical time of the game. They used every offensive weapon they had in an unpredictable way. They kept getting first downs and taking time off the clock. It truly was a demonstration of offensive professional football of the highest order. It showed me that at least this offense is ready to take on any other team in the NFL.

I’ve been critical of Mike McCarthy in the past because of how poorly the offense has played in critical 4th quarter situations. All we have to do is look at how the Packers have performed in their last three post-season games to understand my criticism--the San Francisco game in 2013, the Seattle game in 2014, and the Arizona game last year. If the Packers offense played in the 4th quarter critical times of those games like they played against Detroit, we would have been in at least two other Super Bowls.

But against Detroit they played offensive football the way champions must play and I want to give credit to Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers for that. They are ready to take on all comers.

However, our defense is another story. Obviously our cornerback situation is dire. I don’t know what we can do to fix the problem. Will the storyline of this post-season be Morgan Burnett , LaDarius Gunter and Micah Hyde stepping-up and playing effective cornerback? I certainly hope so. If not, this will be another year of post-season disappointment and that would really be a shame with the offense playing as well as they’re playing now.

Go Pack Go!

...and in the middle of that drive was another "too many men" penalty when the Packers caught the Lions trying to substitute. Made a 3rd and long into a 3rd and manageable (converted on a short pass and run to Monty). Some people might really dislike how ARod manipulates a game with the hard-counts and the like, but this could be as big as any play on that drive.

G-Mo reminds me of a young Donald Driver. He's going nowhere but up.

Pennell"s suspension is now complete. He can be back for the playoffs.

What CBs are on the practice squad? Who can we IR? Is Rollins out for the season or maybe just one game? We are getting REAL short on experience back there and shorter on bodies.

Someone mentioned trying to pick up a FA. Maybe we could trade for a CB from a non playoff team but would have to be familiar with a Capers style D. Not many good options out there except to just keep on manning the wall.

We'll have to see how bad the injuries are to Randall and Dorleant, but they might actually need to use Josh Hawkins next week.

Someone suggested a couple weeks ago that they might be able to pry Tramon Williams away from Cleveland...

It's too late to make any trades for this season, only hope is to sign someone from a practice squad or a true free agent (i.e. if someone were to be waived which is unlikely at this point).
