Packers Vs. Lions - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live.

Alternate title: Three plays that make you go "damn, why don't we hit like that?"

No further explanation is needed.

We do, but spread out over 4 games. LOL I just wish we could clog up the running lanes and deliver some good form tackles, instead of the high grabby kind. Montgomery gained over a hundred yds after first contact.

This is exactly the type of physicality I hoped I’d see in a young, hungry Packer’s team.

The Lion’s reminded me of the ’02 Tampa D- just a bunch of guys flying around with their hair on fire

The Packers play like a team with their hair well-groomed

I've always felt that MLF is the type of guy that thinks he's too pretty to risk getting punched in the face.

I think his team plays the same way.

If you're writing a piece called "Plays that make you go hmmm" then how do you not include the very first play from scrimmage? It's a pass and Meyers and Newman together can't stop the nose tackle who simply shoves them each aside as if they were an irritating itch, and sacks Love. First play! If they didn't know it before the game, Detroit is now aware they'll never have to rush more than four. How does MLF not realize how bad these two guys are? Is he even watching the game or looking down at his little sheet to plan the next play call? The guy has zero awareness and even less ability to make adjustments. Meyers and Newman need to be removed. If they are still starting this week, can we initiate a recall, a petition, a prayer meeting, to replace our Head coach and DC?

Well, here's how this works. I get to pick the plays I want to highlight that make a point I feel like making. It's pretty simple. Now, the play you mention was not the first play from scrimmage and you don't even mention the worst part - the Packers were in max protect! They had EIGHT blocking against FOUR and that wasn't good enough.

What I should have said was Packer's first "offensive play" and if you reread my post you'll see I'm talking about Meyers and Newman, who are on offense. And yes, you do get to choose whatever plays you want. And I get to comment on any plays I want.

You continue to confuse me. It was not the Packers first offensive play, it was the first play of their second possession. And I know exactly which play you're talking about, and my comment references the Packers kept 8 in to block on that play - what would make you think I was talking about the defense? I don't get it.

You're right, Al, I was wrong. It was their 2nd possession. I guess it's not smart getting into a pissing contest with you, especially when I'm wrong. As the next guy who replied said, I guess that makes me a dick. Tough crowd.

Except that you’re commenting on an article which does not contain the play you are commenting on. Frankly Mr Logan, you’re just kinda being a dick to one of the head honchos who keeps our fare website going.

That last video showed Jones getting a helmet-to-helmet hit. Yeah the should came shortly afterward, but that kind of crap can put Jones out for a few weeks, not to mention the long term health impact.

To quote the late great Meatloaf, "two outta three ain't bad"

The last one was a helmet-to-helmet cheap shot.

There's a replay from another angle (I should have included it) which shows that it actually wasn't. He leads with and makes contact with the shoulder first. The helmets make some contact, but it wasn't an intentional thing.

Yes, I recall that view. It doesn’t change the odds of a player being knocked out of the game all that much though on that play.

This is what happens when your opponent can rush 4. Their width of coverage increases outside the Ts and there tends to be no one to impede the defender.

Detroit won’t keep that up for 14 more weeks. It will take its toll on that defense. But anything can happen: concussions, achilles tendons, mcl/acl. Can their offense keep up?

Play 1 could be retitled: Exhibit A on why Josiah Deguara will not be receiving a second contract from the Packers (unless it's a one-year, low-money deal)

...but then I rewatch it a couple times and it's clear that 33 needed to cut that back inside Deguara, too. He would've needed to get past the trailing LB on his own, but there was nothing in that play by outrunning his blocker.

Doubs put in a Chase Claypool like blocking effort on that play as well.

Physicality is a perfectly fine theme to highlight.

But there was plenty of material and themes to choose from. I wonder how many times I saw 3 WRs on the same side of the field - really in a compressed area - all at the same depth.

Not thrilled with the disruptive defensive linemen when they leave open a gap and no one fills the gap. Probably because there are multiple open gaps and the LB or other run support has to wait for the RB to look over the buffet. Yet another possible theme.

Putting your best offensive weapon into positions to get absolutely pasted is probably not the wisest thing to do his first game back from injury. Or ever...but especially the first game back.

From the coach on down, the Lions are built to be tough and physical. It's a mindset, and it starts with the head coach. That should be carried through to the position coaches. And for once, stop bragging about the RAS scores of your players. Give me a guy with a lower RAS who is there to punish the guy across from him, every down, every breath, no let up. No quarter asked, none given. Teach these guys the fundamentals, or send them to off-season camps where they can learn and hone those fundamentals, if necessary.
