Packers vs. Lions - 2017 Game Predictions from CheeseheadTV.com

The CheeseheadTV Staff give you their predictions for the upcoming Packers vs. Lions game.

 GAME PREDICTIONS - 2017 Week 9

Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions

Name Record   Pick Prediction
Andrew 6-1 Green Bay Packers 21-17
The Lions are trying to get back on track while the Packers are desperately trying to keep the season from spinning out of control —we have two desperate teams here, folks, which makes predicting hard work. The key here is actually the Green Bay defense. With the left tackle situation for the Lions pretty grim, the Packers have a chance to get in and disrupt Matt Stafford. That, more than anything else, has to be the focus. The Packers cannot let the Lions drive the ball downfield to Golden Tate and Marvin Jones — I don't think that's a situation which matches up favorably for Green Bay. While I am still worried about Hundley, I think McCarthy rides Aaron Jones as much as he can this week and keeps things simple for Hundley. That only works with a strong defensive effort up front by the Packers. With a bye week to plan, I think they get it done.
Andy 4-3 Detroit Lions 17-16
Green Bay will keep it close after the extra preparation during the bye week but Detroit will get a measure of revenge from the Hail Mary game by kicking a last-second field goal to keep Green Bay's season off track.
Chris P 5-2 Green Bay Packers 20-17
This is going to be a battle. Both teams need to win this one badly. After a bye week, the Packers sneak out a win. But it takes a late field goal from Mason Crosby to do it.
Chris W 4-3 Green Bay Packers 27-24
Historically, Matthew Stafford has put up big numbers against Green Bay, but interceptions (25 in 13 games) have been his undoing. A healthy defense and offensive line will make a difference, resulting in the first regular-season win with Brett Hundley at the helm.
Cory 5-2 Detroit Lions 24-20
This is the litmus test game for Brett Hundley. Coming off a bye, we will find out who he really is. Detroit is only allowing 91 yards a game on the ground, so Hundley has to do something through the air.
David 5-2 Detroit Lions 24-20
Ultimately, the never-go-away Lions stay busy enough in the fourth quarter to wear down a Packers defense on the mend. Brett Hundley and Co. look good enough to give fans hope, but a stingy Lions run defense and Matt Stafford's gunslinging ways prove to be the difference.
Elisha 5-2 Green Bay Packers 23-21
The Packers are 2-6-1 in games Aaron Rodgers has missed due to injury, but just one of those losses has come against a bottom 10 scoring defense (the Lions are allowing the 8th most points per game). My brain tells me that there's very little chance that both McCarthy and Capers will come up with adequate game plans, though my gut tells me that the Packers will find a way to win.
Jason 6-1 Green Bay Packers 27-24
It's time for the Packers to play a complete game and notch a win with no Aaron Rodgers. It can be done and this scenario seems to work in their favor: coming off of a bye, at home and as healthy as they've been all year.  I just can't bet against the good guys this week.
Jersey Al 5-2 Green Bay Packers 20-17
Two desperate teams will meet in this Monday night clash of non-Titans. In a quarterback-dominated league, only one of these teams has a QB who has won games in the NFL, and it's not the Packers. On the other side, while getting Morgan Burnett back should help the communication issues, Stafford has feasted on the Packers' secondary before. I envision a gig game in throwing yards for Stafford, but a few mistakes along the way will keep the points to a level where the Packers can eke out a win.
Michelle 5-2 Green Bay Packers 21-20
This is the true test for Brett Hundley, who has had a long bye week to prepare to take on the 3-4 Lions. Detroit is riding a three-game losing streak, but its performance has been better than its record suggests; the Lions are still putting up 25.1 points per game on offense. To outscore them, the Packers will have to fire on all cylinders on offense, and while that begins with Hundley, the burden also rests on Aaron Jones' shoulders.
Ross 6-1 Detroit Lions 28-20
I'm sticking with my thoughts about the Saints.  I won't pick the Packers to beat a competent NFL team with Rodgers until I see it. Detroit beat Minnesota in Minnesota, they're competent.
Zach 4-3 Green Bay Packers 20-17
Playing at home after a week’s worth of rest should help the Packers - and Brett Hundley - tremendously. Expect Aaron Jones to see the bulk of reps at RB and for the Packers to run their way to victory. A potent rushing attack should open up play-action opportunities for Hundley.

I don't buy this team as a whole, and I haven't since late in 2014. The defense stinks. The offense can't function without Rodgers.

Lions aren't good. But they're better than GB without the best QB in history. And so are the Bears. And then people need to be fired and/or retire.

I see you're dreading the game next week against the Bears as much as I am BM. The Bears are a completely different team at home this year than they are on the road.

I would only add this...Mike McCarthy can't function without Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is the REASON Mike McCarthy is a "Highly Successful HC in this League" . McCarthy hasn't has as much to do with it as he thinks he has.

"And then people need to be fired and/or retire."

That's music to my ears. Does Murphy have the sack to do it? I don't think so and that's a damn shame. That big dummy won't figure it out until Rodgers is ready to retire.

I agree totally with you. Da bears will be tough to beat at home, why, because they have a defense! Lions have a good defense too. Do we? 3rd and long, need stop? I have my doubts with Capers run circus. You're also 100% right on MM. No Rodgers will expose his true coaching abilitites. Monday night will show us both MM and DC worth, which I expect to be less then stellar. I hope I'm wrong! Tonight! Huge! Showtime!

Nice predictions. Three years to watch and learn Brett, two weeks to scheme MM and DC, offense intact, defense plays soft and can't stop 3rd and long. Monday night is the final exam I feel. With above statements the eye test will tell us about the remainder of the season. No excuses for not winning!

Does anyone not feel as though MM must have had a hypothetocal plan with Hundley the last couple years in case A rod went down? What he would call and how the offense would change in that situation?? He must have an idea of Hundleys strengths and weaknesses by now. If there was no plan, or just continue like we do otherwise that is just malfeasance. I get really skeptical of, "Oh well, they had the bye week to figure out a game plan" Seriously????

Amen.

I too think it is criminal on MM's part if he didn't have a set playlist that Hundley could practice and execute in the event AR missed part of a game. It appears that we had a back-up QB who couldn't play in the short term scenario.

Hundley did better coming into the vike game then he did after preparing for the Saints. Wake up fans, coaching! MM wants to shrink the playbook. Really? Shrink it? What, run run run punt? Or run run, punt? Or run, punt? Watch Monday night, genius at work with his brother DC. We'll see it. Please blast me Tuesday morning, please. I'm hoping you don't get the chance, miracles can happen. Hail Mary? Oh that's right, Rodgers isn't playing and can't help hide others.

And of course King drops out of practice today with a back injury and may not play tomorrow. This team is jinxed....from the top leaders to the lack of player availability

The team isn't jinxed. The GM has not done a good job since 2010, and the DC and most of the defensive staff should have been fired after 2011.

They draft way too many players that are injury prone, so somebody up there is not doing a good job of screening medical or strength issues.

I got hammered for saying TJ Watt should have been the Packers draft pick...HAMMERED. He fell in our lap and Thompson fumbled. Just like he has the last several drafts.

Nick, I remember you thinking we should have taken Watt and also that you loved the King pick (which I am sure you wrote). It was a tough call, imo. Not clear yet that TT fumbled it. Watt had 2 sacks in game one and over the next 6 games managed two more. That is a nice line for a rookie in 7 games. We talked about Willis: he's playing 35% of the snaps, 1 game started, but just 14 tackles and one sack. Too early to assess this. Adams has done nothing but get injured, but we both really loved that pick. It is too early to judge these moves. I didn't like Biegel.

I thought Biegel's talent level was that of a late 4th or early 5th round pick. I think he is hard-nosed guy, and might be a fine ILB or off the ball LB. I just don't think Biegel's pass rushing skills are going to translate well to the NFL.
I was disappointed as well that TT didn't address OLB earlier. I had worries about Watt, but I thought he could be special. That said, I liked King and getting the extra pick.

King is not on the injury report.

And look at the injury reports from around the league. Plenty of teams with long lists, just like the Packers....

MMs confidence in Hundley results in Hundley playing like Joe Montana. Packers OL plays like the 7 blocks of granite and the defense has it's best game since the Lombardi era.

Packers take revenge for their 1962 Thanksgiving Day loss in Detroit and drub the Lions 28 - 3. Thanks, Since '61

Where did all this unbridled optimism come from?
Normally you're more reserved and restrained in your prediction.
This makes relatively no sense.
I have a hundred that says the Pack have zero chance of holding Detroit to 3 points or less.

Since '61 I suspect there's more than a little "tongue in cheek" with that bold prediction, but I LIKE it! MM has a darn good record after a bye week. I refuse to write off this team like so many seem to be doing (so swiftly!). I'm hoping for a good battle tonight and a well earned "W" for the Packers after!

Hundley is a complete wild card. My head says that he should be accorded more actual playing time before making a judgment. Then I look at his nflcom scouting report again and every weakness listed there is still readily apparent in his play, plus one or two more. Those weaknesses are mostly between the ears, so the game could slow down for him. It may not happen by Monday. Detroit is stout against the run, and our OL individually isn't more than average as a run blocking group. Aaron Jones is capable of finding holes where the play wasn't designed to go. Overall, I don't see GB putting up more than 17 pts. Field goals and PTAs could be adventures.

I feel fairly positive about the defense if King, Randall and Burnett all play. The one strength I perceive in Capers is when the opponent can be made one dimensional. I don't think Detroit will have success running the ball. Still, with a functional GB offense, I'd guess Detroit scores in the low twenties. With the GB offense I expect to see, Detroit should be in the upper twenties. Perry needs to dominate Detroit's 3rd string LT, but if he is still using a club, that is difficult to require.

Should be a hard fought game. If we have some big plays on offense, we need to take them to the house. A few bounces our way probably are necessary.

Leave it to the Packers to probably lose 2 Starters during the Bye, Bennett and King. Teams typically get healthier during the bye.... not the Packers. Brooks, Taylor, Brice, Thomas, Dial, Bennett, King are all going to, or, probably going to, miss the game....SMH

I don't know that King is a terrible loss against the Lions. I think they can make do with House and Randall, especially with Burnett back on the field. The pass rush needs help more than anything else at this stage, and Brooks continuing to miss time is really hurting this defense.

Regardless, it all comes down to the D and so far they have failed, just look at the Saints game. Same old story even if Aaron plays. Rodgers can’t do it all.

No disrespect cheesehead1 but just WHO do you think has been doing it all if not Rodgers?

There's hasn't been and there isn't now another player who covers up more weaknesses than Rodgers does for the Packers. It's not just the lack of talent on the field either. McCarthy would have been fired YEARS AGO without Rodgers. No McCarthy means NO Capers so he'd be gone. Thompson? Thompson has benefited from Rodgers more than any without a doubt. Just go look at all the past drafts, especially the last 5 or so and tell me HOW that dude has a job.

I have even more questions about McCarthy than I have about Hundley. I think there are a lot of coaches out there that feel like they could look pretty darn good if they had Hall of Fame quarterback play. So have the Packers been winning because of McCarthy or in spite of McCarthy??? McCarthy was horrible against the Saints. An offensive idiot savant - minus the savant part. His ultra conservative play calling consistently left Brett in 3rd and long facing pressure. McCarthy continually put his QB in position to fail. He didn't even give Hundley a chance. We still don't know if we could have beaten the Saints, because McCarthy refused to let his team try to win.

1) The offensive game plan needs to be more aggressive on 1st and 2nd down and pass more. Play calling must be less predictable. Let's keep 3rd down more manageable. Run, run, pass on third and long into a 6 or a 7 man blitz package is not the formula for Hundley to be successful.

2) Would it be too much to ask for McCarthy to actually scheme some receivers open? And for the love of God, if something is working do not completely abandon it!

3) Get Brett out of the pocket with planned roll outs. Use Hundley's athleticism to stress the defense by extending the play and threatening the QB run. Don't just leave your athletic quarterback as a stationary target for heavy blitzes.

Here's hoping McCarthy can put it together this week and get the Pack a big home win. Go Pack, Go!

On paper, Green Bay should win by 14+ points. O-Line is healthy--much better than Detroit's--and our Defense is healthy, too. Detroit is selling out to stop the run and smother short passes, leaving intermediate zones wide open. That's suicide with our line.

This is simple. Attack with intermediate passes on offense, backing off Detroit's defense before feeding Jones. Activate Mays--benching Williams--for a Mays-Ripkowski backfield in short yardage situations. On defense, press coverage and send young blitzers like Jones and Biegel to take Stafford out of his current safe passing game.

Don't play to survive. Play to win.

That said, McCapers will put Hundley in 3rd down holes by bashing his run game into early-down walls. McCapers will continue using idiotic 2-man defensive fronts that constantly wear down, "easing in" Biegel when we have no pass rush, and rarely--if ever--sending Jones. Coverage will be soft, inviting long, wear-out-your-D drives from Stafford and company.

This should be 34-17, Packers.

Instead, I'll pick McCapers to beat his own team, 31-24.

Most of the predictions have come back to earth since those bizzare wins predicted against the saints. Unfortunately I still don’t see this offense getting more than two touchdowns; the defense or special teams unit will need to get one for this to happen. I think GB will put 23 points but that a lot of that will be field goals. Can the pack win? Sure they can. Keep the lions offense off the field and 23 is enough to win. 23-20 packers.

If this team wins another game, I will be surprised. They are not good from now top to bottom. MM play calling once again way too conservative and not vertical enough early. These guys are nowhere near good enough to play 14 points behind! Pack it in folks. Next year is another opportunity I hope.
